The Chargers were my favorite AFL team and I enjoyed many an ABC broadcast with Curt Gowdy and Paul Christman. I went to concerts at dear old Balboa Stadium in the Navy in the 70s, and it was a bit like a pilgrimage.
A good friend here in Lower Alabama was longtime Charger OL Terry Owens, who was the State Farm agent in Samson. e passed away from CTE-related causes, and willed his body to scientific research. During my time in promotion in pro wrestling I met Ernie Ladd several ttime.

I read a story about the 1963 San Diego Chargers from Larry Grantham of the New York Jets and Jerry Mays of the Kansas City Chiefs. The Jets and Chiefs had won back to back Super Bowls. Instead of talking about how good their respective teams were they talked about the '63 Chargers and how Scary Good that team was.

The Chargers were not the World Champions of professional football. They were the American
    Football League champions of 1963.
    The Chargers’ quarterback, Tobin
Rote, is the answer to a trivia question. Who is the only quarterback to lead a team to both an NFL and an AFL championship? The answer is
Rote who in addition to the Chargers in 1963, he also led the Detroit Lions to a victory in the 1957 championship game.
