Hey everyone, I just added some more examples of single bass techniques that stem from the Jojo technique/constant release. I hope it helps!. Thanks, Todd.
Thanks a lot, Todd, you really saved my right foot, no kidding, cause I trapped in a corner recording heavily in a studio and rehearsing after a very long break. So it was a disaster for my knee and all the motion became very wrong(( and I was looking for some emergent solution... so I was lucky to find two of your videos about the heel-toe and almost recovered from my problem after 3 or 4 weeks. Btw the control level, the input efficiency are a way better than I've ever had, so many thanks again
Totally agree. I did Tommy Igoes rudimental routine just 10 mins here . Later in the day . Now 3 years later I’m addicted but still only do 30 minutes. 20 most an hour. Or before drumset practice. What fascinating to me I saw an old Freddy Grubber interview where he said Buddy Rich understood the laws of gravity. The drop of you foot for the first note . ???
Thank you, i appciate the nice words. I will try to make another vid but think of it like this. Heel toe is two seperate motions using mostly ankle strength. Constant release is very much like the moeller hand technique, the initial motion is from your whole leg and the subsequent beats are ankle based while raising the leg up. Watch steve smiths vid, it demonstrates this very well. Thanks, todd
Chasalopolis- thanks for checking out the video! We all reassess from the ground up from time to time, but to be honest, some of the best drummers out there sit very high or very low...it all comes down to where you are both comfortable and able to execute from. One big mistake I see is that people get very used to how they sit and practice when OFF the kit and then do not have their kit set up in the same way...so it is very inconsistent. Set up how you like, but pay attention to staying consistent anytime you practice on or off the kit. Good luck!
Hey bigmikey Thank you for watching my video and thanks for asking a question I appreciate it. to be honest with you I actually go out of my way to not ever see how fast I can do something. I spent years trying to go as fast as I can with many things and then realized I wasn't ever being very musical, and my favorite drummers were always musical regardless of speed. I can go pretty fast but it's not something I ever think about. I can however go faster than with the other techniques. Thanks!
Hey, great concepts. I can't help but think Fred "Twinkle Toes" Flintstone would be great at this. Any thoughts on seat height and balance? I'm reassessing from the ground up.
Hey! First of all, GREAT videos you got there. really detailed and easy to follow... the best iv'e seen on youtube so far regarding this technique. I do have one question \ request :) In regarding to the difference between Heel Toe \ Constant Release, i didn't quite catch it watching this video. they look almost the same to me. Is it possible you could elaborate on this matter, and perhaps even making a short video on the difference between these two techniques, with all the small details? Tnx
Great question, thank you! When strictly practicing a new technique aim for concentrated 10 minutes, do the technique correctly, then stop. Relax go get a drink, come back and repeat. Then as you can do it correctly for longer periods you can increase your time of practice. The whole point is. Not to spend time on doing it incorrectly. It took me 6 months and i am currently working hard on incorporating it into many new grooves. New posting soon! Thank you.
Norman Montano asked if this can be practiced without the pedal, like, at school or on the road. Norman! I love the way you think! Yes, the key is to first get the motion happening on the pedal, learn it slowly and so that you can feel the whole motion. pay close attention to what your leg, foot, and ankle are doing. after several reps on the pedal, try to recreate the motion so that it feels the same off pedal. what you will find is that it is a very simple motion (this is why it works very well in a practical application!) the absolute best thing for a drummer to do is to learn to practice off the kit, drums are very different from other instruments, so it requires us to,get creative to continue learning. Great Question! thank you, Todd
@3:12, those triple strokes are aweseome!!!! that's one thing I wish could do b/c it free's you from double bass. I've been working on the constant release/jojo method for a while now but haven't got the triple strokes. How much different is the triple stroke from the straight 16ths, it looks like its easier in a way b/c its a quicker motion that doesn't have to be sustained. Great vid too, thanks for posting!!!
Whats up Todd...just was wondering if you remember how long it took you to learn the JoJo technique? When you say sit down for short periods when startng how long would be considered too long?I am really trying to pick this technique up and yes it is completely opposite of the way i was taught. Thanks for taking the time!!!
You could certainly build up the necessary muscles in your leg which would speed the learning process for sure but you need that weight of the spring to practice really.
Is this technique based on a person's natural talent/gift? Meaning, was your foot speed slow and overtime, you built up speed with this technique? Sorry if my question sounds silly. But I learned that some people just have very fast foot speed and/or fast hands, while some just sound average. My foot speed is decent, but it is NOT blazing - so I'm always down on myself because of this. I'm going to try this technique to see if I found the answer to my sloth-like foot speed. Thanks.
It's a pretty cool and smart technique and you deserve a huge respect for practicing it and having achieved nice results. But when I watch guys like Jojo who are trying to develop speed with their right foot I wonder, is it a principle not to use a double pedal? You don't have to play with your single hand having both, don't you? Why practice so much to be able to play 16th notes in 100 bpm with one foot when you can easily play them with a double pedal and it will sound more solid?
Hey man, its a great question and cut to the heart of technique versus MUSIC! First of all everyone has these insecurities, everyone! Go and listen again to Bonham playing most of what he does, it is all in a medium tempo, then listen to how he phrases things and ask yourself what is more important...speed or phrasing! Benny Grabs DVD is amazing for showing how important and great it is to focus on music. Speed is soon boring if not coupled with great musical thought. So, just play music brotha
Sorry my damm auto correct makes me look like an idiot, I hope you get what I'm aiming at, never get down on yourself for moving art and music into the world! And keep moving forward. Todd

nice i like
what practice pad are you using?

hey todd how fast can you go with a single pedal?
Can you practice this without the pedal? Like for example, when at school or on the road.
You could certainly build up the necessary muscles in your leg which would speed the learning process for sure but you need that weight of the spring to practice really.
Hey all new vid posted- JOJO MAYER BASS DRUM TECHNIQUE GROOVES.
check it out. Thanks, todd

lol
How strong is the pedal spring?
Pretty loose at first then increased as time goes on
Un saludo a los que no agradecen.

omg bingo 😳😱🥱
No. He also slides foot forward. What you are doing is another technique, which works great. But it's not the "Jojo Mayer " technique.
No, he doesnt and he says so in several clinic vids
