Silica gel is silicon dioxide. In the "gel" form its intended use is as a dessicant, that is it controls humidity by adsorbing moisture. Silicon and Oxygen bonds are very stable at physiologic temperatures, and so stable that human enzymes are unable to activate reactions. However, while it may be limited in chemical toxicity, physically it can cause problems.

I accidentally ate the silica. The lovely man at poison control immediately asked me, "Were you making a smoothie?" Yes, I was. I had emptied some frozen smoothie ingredients into the blender. I didn't realize that something frozen would have a gel desiccant in it. Since I blended it for my usual 4 minutes, it burst the package and the beads were evenly distributed throughout. I didn't "get it" until I found the packet. Then the man at Poison Control asked how many packets were there? Just 1. He said I'd be fine, just remember to check for packets in frozen food as well as freeze-dried items! Less learned...

For those wondering "Why would they need silica gel packets for 3D printing?" - it's to control the moisture content of the plastic filament. The filament that's fed into the 3D printer needs to be kept dry, as when it absorbs moisture from humidity in the air, it can result in reduced print quality, with under-extrusion, stringing, bubbles, and oozing, thus leading to low-quality and fragile printed parts.

Huh. Actually kinda nice to see one of these where nothing particularly bad happens. I knew one packet of silica gel wasn't going to do much, but I did wonder if 25 packets might cause dehydration, damage the GI tract, etc. Probably did cause some tooth dental damage, though, since he ate it like cereal, meaning he was basically chewing sand.
In pottery you see, we clean up the little streaks of clay on the tables as we work because once that clay dries it becomes like powder and because of the silica in clay it’s is not very good to inhale. If you shouldn’t inhale silica, don’t eat it.
Microcrystalline silica (quartz), of which there is usually several percent in clays can be dangerous to inhale so it is important to take care with this. Dessicant silica is amorphous though, the molecular structure is basically random, and it shouldn't present a silicosis risk. It's still advisable to avoid breathing dust though. Generally naturally occurring silica is the bad stuff to inhale, even fine sand is a risk, silicosis is bad!

This was a stress induced mental breakdown, it's heartbreaking man. When I was in the Army I broke down and thought my wife was a witch trying to use spell craft to kill me. There's no explanation for why we think what we do in a delusion but its equally sad and terrifying... I pray this man never goes back to this hell.

I think you are part of the problem to begin with. Communicating such ideas and the behavior that typically accompanies it is what I have seen to be the mental breakdowns of many people. In reality, I bet he was just too beneficial to not keep him at his position in the eyes of the corporation. I and many others have to sand bag our performance in such instances or wind up down similar paths to this man if we wish to succeed in the current corporate employment environment.

Instead of being promoted in-house (same company) im surprised he didn't look for a better paid role elsewhere. Or even a side step. Sometimes shaking things up does wonders for your mental health rather than stay in the same place and routine and be in a rut...
Maybe some aspects about him that made him un-promotable also made him rage eat silica gel packs. Poor decision making could be one.
