Kurt Masur was the man who first led a public protest in the cycle of peaceful revolt that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. If there is a man who has a right to conduct this majestic anthem to freedom, it is he.
@@ekaterinazamyshliaeva4702 It seems you fail to understand. First, this piece of music is all about freedom, as the ouverture of a play about the legendary revolt of the Netherlands against Habsburg oppression. Second, KurtMasur, unlike probably any other conductor alive, really has struck a blow for freedom. Now, if that displeases you, that is your own affair. But this is not "politics" in your demeaning sense of the word. It is about justice and courage and what Beethoven and Dr.Masur both stand for.
Such a wonderful piece. Such a great example of how Beethoven can shift from dark to light, and back. The opening notes have such weight and gravitas, and never fail to move me deeply. He builds tension, then moves to sweetness and light. He really was the master of them all. This is a wonderful interpretation, with the sort of restraint in the pacing so necessary for this work.
It is 'incomplete!' Beethoven could not believe that 'someone can 'do something like that!' Lord Egmont! After 'the strong show!' Told Lord Orantjie! Maestro Masur, the orchestra of Leipzig, the magnificent setting of the Church of St Nicolai...and Beethoven's Egmont! What complete joy. Watching the Maestro conduct, sans orchestral score or baton, harkened back to another century. The beautiful St Nicolai completed the ethereal loftiness of the Egmont. It was pure ambrosia.
