great video. appreciate you showing the mistakes and how you addressed them. obv someone watching this (like me) is inexperienced and like seeing how you made adjustments. Many other bed videos involve tounge/groove, drill presses,
Thanks for the feedback John! I often feel the same as you watching similar videos and find those mistakes I see are the most important thing I learned so I can avoid them!
I design my bed with comfort and practicality in mind. Key features, mattress slightly bigger than the frame to minimise accidents and the base or the foot of the bed slightly inside the frame where your toes are safe from touching it.
Thanks for watching and the feedback Ben. Yeah I personally find the mistakes in videos the most useful part of them. That way I know what not to do. Posting another bed build this week. Nice big mistake in that one as well...
Thanks for watching! It is definitely always satisfying to reuse something especially when it saves time and money. I am currently making a second bed out of poplar and really wishing I had another old IKEA bed to get another stretcher from...
Personally the risk of holding CERTAIN power tools with gloves on is low enough for me. Rather keep them on while handling rough timber Other tools they’re off 100% of the time.
Get what works! I will say I am really happy with most of the stuff I currently own. I need to invest in a more substantial table saw though at some point.
Agreed. I'm actually looking to try and get the internal hardware (can only find the center slat beam by itself though) they use for a new bed since it is so strong and cheap.
The headboard will likely self-destruct as the wood moves, or at least crack depending on how dry your wood was. Check out how to make real bread board ends. A channel called 3rd coast craftsman has an ideal example but you don't have to take it that far. It wouldn't take much to change your design to better accommodate movement. Maybe just gluing the center?
Yes I've learned a lot as I've built some of these. This headboard is definitely not ideal, but surprisingly so far it has held up fine, it has contacted a little more but nothing else. I'll be curious to see how it holds up. Thanks for the feedback!
Looks very nice. Probably involved much more work than you really had to put into it. Best to shop around and pick the nicest looking cuts of knotless cedar at your local home improvement store. Except for the Ikea slats, their hardware wasn't needed, and good quality studs could have been used for internal supports.
I don't have the machine you have ; accept a small mice sander and hand saw. Can I make , first time. Mind you I m buying wood from b&q. Sizes is a problem . L 2m w 198mm T 27 for timber frame , is it too heavy?
I'm sure you could make this with a hand saw and sander, assuming your wood is already milled and square. It's going to be a lot more work and I doubt it will come out as clean, unless you have lots of experience in hand tools.
I like the mistakes you made, you bounced back up like a true carpenter, next project go with African mahogany ( really expensive) if not then go with red or white oak.
Nathan Builds awsome!! Show the work, iam a carpenter myself, iam puttting my machines together etc, I have a lot of tools, but it feels like I need more 👍🏼, I did my brothers windows decorations from African mahogany , the down side of it is that you have to use all the wood from the same tree in order to have the same color, that was close to impossible, however it turned out pretty good, his pockets were hurting but now house looks beautiful. Keep up the good work brother.
Well done, are you planning to do any simple storage bed with gas lift, and raised with feet. the simplest design: platform with no headboard. I want to do something sleek and clean, no bulky boxes. thanks!
Thanks for the feedback! I'm currently working on two beds. One large modern walnut bed and one midcentury modern pine bed. I'll add one with a lift to my list of builds to do though!
I'm thinking about making a bed frame, but a simple one. Instead of all those slats under the mattress, can you just do a sheet of plywood? Do the slats add some springyness to the bed?
Thanks for the kind words and watching! I'm thinking of doing another similar build implementing some lessons learned. I'm also working on a walnut bed out of $1500 of walnut wood.
thanks for the video and I think you recovered nicely from the simple mistakes. My Dad always liked working with Black Walnut and Cherry, but now days it breaks the bank for a slab at the local saw mill.
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I can attest to the cost of walnut, I'm working on another king bed currently out of walnut and the wood was about $1300... It is absolutely beautiful though and really nice to work with.
did you use a box spring under your mattress? The esthetic on the bed to mattress to headboard ratio is not quite right...I think. But that opinion of mine is worth 2 cents...
I did not - this is a foam mattress so doesn’t need a box spring. I kind of like the thinner mattress look do to each their own I guess! You could definitely adjust the dimensions to get to the look you want. Have a great holiday!!
@@NATHANBUILDS I like the thinner mattress look too...I'm guessing that bed would be pefect for a 12 or 10 inch mattress..and it seems like you have a 16 or more!
Yes, I built another bed out of poplar and that one is fantastic. It's about $300 for a queen bed. Check out that video if you want to learn more. I'm also working on a king walnut bed :). Thanks for watching!
Total cost was about $32 for wood and $30-35 for screws/finish/other incidentals. Obviously there is an additional cost if you don't have any of the tools. Hope this helps.
I'm here because I broke my bed. The wood seems to get drier and the boards weaker as years pass by. I already fixed it once, put metal clamps in it, glued it, refinished it, etc. Now it's broken in it's length. I attached 2 more legs, so at least I could sleep somewhere. We only have very expensive and bad quality beds in supermarkets. Most carpenters are old and they charge in the extremes. I already have the board and waching videos on how to make perfect.
It has held up ok, but the room it is in doesn't have much temperature variation. I've definitely learned some lessons since this build though :). Thanks for watching!
Yeah there are definitely a couple things in here where it is required to have more than that. Im going to add a project like that to my list of to dos. I often use more tools since they save time--something I don't have much of--but many times you can make some small changes in design to account for fewer tools. Of course working like that isn't for everyone. Anyway - thanks for the feedback! Also, I think Modern Builds channel and Homemade Modern have done some projects like that.
Hey, I reused those from an Ikea bed I had. You could just cut the slats and use any fabric for the strips that are holding them together. Probably staple them in.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS IM A BEGINNER...DONT KNOW HOW IM GOING TO SQUARE IT OFF I HAVE EVERYTHING BUT THE TABLE SAW MINES ISNT THAT BIG...THANK YOU AGAIN THIS IS AWESOME
Thanks for watching and the feedback! Also in my early videosi had way less stuff if you want to see how I delt with some of the issues. If you need recommendations on stuff to get let me know! Just realize that everyone messes up. Woodwork is figuring out those problems :)
Hey thanks! For the way I built this bed you need a table saw, router, drill/driver, circular saw, sander (the planer is definitely optional). Obviously the price varies dramatically, but you could get a decent set of these tools for $700ish--less actually because I upgraded my table saw since this video. I appreciate the video! Why did you attach the last cross board on the bottom with 20 pocket hole screws instead of glue and dowels? Didn’t want to wait for it to dry?
Hey John, thanks for watching! I think you are referring to the last piece at the bottom of the headboard. I didn't use dowels because they would have shown on the outside of the legs and I wanted a cleaner look. The pocket holes are a bit of a band aid, but you at least can't see them.
Email me on the business contact email and I'll send you a copy of the SketchUp that way. Unfortunately those are the only plans I have though. You should also download the 2017 free version of SketchUp if you have not.
Hey, sorry this was sent to spam for some reason. For this video I used a cheapo mic I got on Amazon, but recently I switched to a Yeti Blue mic which is totally worth it. I do very little post production on audio now! Also, welcome!
So I'm going to need a planer, table saw, large pipe clamps, small clamps, large adjustable ratchet clamps, pocket hole jig, dowel jig, router and bits, power drill & bits, Ikea bed hardware, circular saw, 2nd smaller table saw(outside), set of chisels, power sprayer, C-clamps, and an orbital sander? Okay, I'm ready. Nice job btw.
Lol, to make this you definitely need some tools. DIY doesn't mean with your bare hands - that would be a good video though! You could also make a few adjustments and use fewer tools if you wanted.
Finally found the best design of bed frame diy. Been looking for this for such a long time now.
Thanks! Let me know how it goes!
That’s fair that you mentioned the plank shrinked outside. Wood is very sensitive to moisture and it twists, bends and shrink if not dry.
You are an editing genius. There's nothing you haven't thought about as far as the volumes, background music Etc everything is just wonderful
That's very kind of you Richelle. Thanks so much for watching and the feedback!

I design my bed with comfort and practicality in mind. Key features, mattress slightly bigger than the frame to minimise accidents and the base or the foot of the bed slightly inside the frame where your toes are safe from touching it.
Yeah, if you're building the whole bed from scratch why not spend a little extra effort to save your toes and shins/knees.
Thanks for showing your mistakes. Most people don't show real life situations.
Thanks for watching and the feedback Ben. Yeah I personally find the mistakes in videos the most useful part of them. That way I know what not to do. Posting another bed build this week. Nice big mistake in that one as well...
It is so amazing but I don't know where to find materials.......I like it so much....amazing.

I thought gloves were dangerous with saw and power tool equipment. Great bed. Stay safe.

Other tools they’re off 100% of the time.
Porter cable, Bosch, Ryobi, DeWalt and Milwaukee? My kind of dude. No allegiance to a brand or big box store.

I feel like ikea would do well opening a hardware division. Sell hardware kits.
Agreed. I'm actually looking to try and get the internal hardware (can only find the center slat beam by itself though) they use for a new bed since it is so strong and cheap.
Love the video.. i was wondering what about a cheap inexpensive kids playset or kids swing.
I'm sure you could build something cool. Unfortunately I have about four playgrounds near me so probably won't be making one anytime soon.

About $75 for 2 2x12s and screws/finish.
I'm here because I broke my bed. The wood seems to get drier and the boards weaker as years pass by. I already fixed it once, put metal clamps in it, glued it, refinished it, etc. Now it's broken in it's length. I attached 2 more legs, so at least I could sleep somewhere. On the headboard, I think you gonna have a problem down the road! You didn’t allow for expansion and contraction of the wood.
It has held up ok, but the room it is in doesn't have much temperature variation. I've definitely learned some lessons since this build though :). Thanks for watching!

I used a rabbet router bit that uses a little roller to keep it flush against the workpiece.
