- Restoring this Antique Walnut writing desk with fire, was a lot of fun. Some of my favourite woodworking techniques are with Antique furniture. Restoring French polish, repairing veneers with specialist hand tools and making missing or damaged parts. The processes to add patina to a new piece of wood for an restoration project, include hitting it with a chain, painting it black and sanding it to leave the black paint in the grain and dings, these are then stained to match the colour and French polished.
Just tried this on my coffee table and now you owe me a new house 🔥

A-MA-ZING!!! What product was it that applied B4 setting the top aflame to burn off the old varnish? 👍
Hi Debra, I used methylated spirits, this softens the French polish . The fire softens it further and releases any trapped moisture under the surface. I then rubbed it with vey fine wire wool to spread the polish and restore the surface. I then applied a few coats of French polish to bring the sheen back and protect the wood.
