@@dannyboy5008 DLC in fighting games is somewhat justified.Characters take effort to make and balance with the rest of the roster. And in most cases it's not like companies are cutting characters to resell them later to you. And 5 dollars is a fair price IMO. At least I didn't feel scammed when buying Noctis in Tekken 7 or Joker and Byleth in Smash...

This really puts into perspective why former Turtle Rock head writer Matt Colville has voiced his personal distaste of "gatekeepers" between creatives and their audience. I feel bad that Turtle Rock's legacy is so closely tied to Evlove's ignoble death-- they seemed like a really cool bunch of people.
EDIT: It seems that Turtle Rock lives on and may be in talks with Microsoft about something? Hopefully brings them back into things.

Doesn't matter who made it. It's being played by everyone because it's good just as it would've been forgotten if it were bad. A Developer isn't what gives a game longevity. If No Mans Sky had Rockstars name on the box it would still be shit. Think before you speak.

    • @Cyael
      @Cyael 7 років тому +22

You're speaking out of ignorance so here's some information. A VAST amount of Overwatch players don't gaf about who made it & haven't played other Blizzard titles. What DOES appeal to them is a FUN title, REGULARLY UPDATED by a FREQUENTLY COMMUNICATING team of Devs. Nintendo's "Brand Recognition" didn't stop the Wii U from failing. Bungie made FUCKING HALO & turned around and made Destiny which, at launch specifically, was shit.
If you believe Overwatch to be in the same league as other bullshit out atm, you're entitled to your wrong opinion but everything going on with it is what the industry needs more of.

6:36 There. That's what killed Evolved for me. Weeks of playing against that monster where as soon as you catch them, they would just fly up to the sky and be at the complete other side of the map and you'd be back to square one. It would then just evolve and kill everything. FUN!

I was basically done with Evolve at the stage when they'd never show us actual unedited gameplay, but did show fake gamers/eSport dudes saying they are shaking from this experience. That's pretty much the 101 sign that should warn ppl not to buy the game. Well, this and the fact that Tutrle Rock weren't ever particularly good developers anyways. Left 4 Dead wasn't bad, per se, but... it's just ok. There's nothing groundbreaking in it, it's just an okay game, a well polished indie game level. To see from the get go how they were bragging about their ability as devs and quality of their unreleased project without even being good in the first place was anticlimactic at best.

The bit at the end about neglecting making a good game *now* in favor of trying to use it as a vehicle to sell future content also applies to movies. Some modern big-budget movies are so concerned with setting up future installments and a shared universe that they forget they have to give the audience a reason to care about the movie they're watching.

  • @Leto_0

It looks so different from the alpha/beta footage I saw years ago. It originally had small monsters in indoor facilities, and both the monster and human sides would unlock cool powers over time. The monster could spawn creeps to scout and harrass, and actually evolve over time into bigger monsters with cooler abilities. Most of the time the monster would be crawling through vents and stuff to try and catch people alone. It had a cool 'Aliens' vibe.
This looks like shit compared to that. Big monster smash humans. Humans shoot monster. Bleh

"You only get one first impression." I like this statement because it sums up things pretty nicely when it comes to games rolling off the assembly lines with gaping holes in the first place. Final Fantasy XV is so hurriedly stitched together that you can see the cotton spilling out through its hastily sewn together seams, so Square Enix is rolling out free patches and additional story content to fix things up. Some people might applaud them for that, but it's really no different than patching a broken game like, say, Assassin's Creed: Unity.

on the "oh, Ubisoft" moment, I do gotta say I'm not really all that bothered by the microtransaction options for cosmetic changes. but it's definitely still an eye-rolling moment. because, really, if you recognize so obviously that your microtransactions are unpopular, to the point where you have to pretend they aren't microtransactions when they clearly are, why the fuck even bother putting them in? XD that's like asking to have egg thrown on your face. Ubisoft, please. be smarter than that.

Id argued that evolve had a second release when stage 2 came out, it spiked with its higher player base throughout all the years its been out and when the new players who just decieded to stay, it was still higher then the original evolve peak still, but it was 2K who decided to kill it off, even though it was doing so well

I actually played Evolve Stage 2. I enjoyed it, but only to a point. It was a multiplayer centric game, so any significant advancement in any way was nill because the multiplayer was just outright dead. The solo mode was also incredibly boring. Being the only person playing wouldn't normally be all that bad, but the team AI is just dogshite. The monster AI was even worse, always running and by the time it fought or did anything worthwhile it was stage 3 and a bitch to kill. The only compliments I could give it are A) A lot of the characters were pretty cool (even without any real explanation as to why one was a bugman) and B) The concept of 4 people up against something immensely strong, intelligent and frightening sounds like a hell of a lot of fun.

I think what really killed it wasn't the DLC but the flippin match making system when they tried to get competitive. You could sit on there for an hour and a half afterwards and you'd get stuck in a game with zero other actual players, all because of matchmaking. I liked playing, i hated waiting. Even bad players were better than none. Also needed a local splitscreen mode, that was a big dissapointment.

Evolve's failure is just a shame. The concept was good and asymmetric multiplayer is such a rarity in big games, not to mention Turtle Rock going F2P with it & overhauling the game shows they were, at least to some extent, dedicated to making a good product. I hope Evolve is never forgotten. Not because I think it's a good or anything like that, but simply because I want people to be reminded how the AAA gaming market is run. When you see ads or trailers for a new game, you have to forget about getting hyped for that vague per-rendered bullshit and start researching about the game just to find out how much DLC it is planned to have (Since everyone has DLC in mind while developing the game for some reason), you need to see how many special editions it has so you can get all the posters, figurines, or iconic neckties you want while buying the game, and you need to learn if the game is going to be released in it's beta version, with the rest of the content coming out as patches over a few months time.

Fun fact: both Evolve and No Man's Sky successfully returned on their investments and then some.
So, the question remains -- who is really being fu-u-u-u-cked: greedy, shameless publishers and developers, who laugh all the way to the bank, or stupid, easily manipulated gamers, who refuse to learn anything from past experiences and time and time again buy into the hype and continue supporting scummy practices of this shitty industry, making sure that they will most certainly be f-u-u-u-u-ucked again many many more times?

They do laugh to the bank, but their goodwill can run out if the fail is big enough.
No Man's Sky devs will have it very hard to make a new game, as all media will crash on them reminding everyone of the clusterfuck.
EA did also get it's investment back and more with Simcity 5. It rode on a way of nostalgia, and a good IP, but that got destroyed, and now they have a dead IP they cant milk anymore, whereas had it been just slightly less bad, they could bank on it for more games.
They went so far the IP imploded, and from the crater other city builders rose to grab the genre throne.
And now Maxis is dead, and I highly doubt EA will try again.
Hype remains, of course, but fucking it up enough can get people to distrust a company.
And I say this as someone that did pre order SC5.

And the people who tell you to completely ignore reviews, and just buy the game to try for yourself perpetuate the problem. Games are $60 brand new. That's a lot to take a gamble on whether or not a game is good. I'm not saying all reviews are good (ign's review of God Hand says hi). But smart consumers don't just rely on one source to tell them if something is good or not. But that requires people to do more than the basic minimum, which is way too much for some. These practices by giant publishers are going to cause another crash. It probably won't be any time soon, but it's coming. And I, for one, welcome it.
