    The wagon vibe is WHY I like the Outback. I wish there were more wagon options in the market and am frankly exhausted by the crossover SUV segment. Great overview on the Outback's pros!

      Audi Allroad, Volvo V60 Cross Country and V90 Cross Country. I think MB still offers a very expensive AWD wagon.

      @@DavGreg Those cars however aren't very cheap to run or reliable long term like the Subaru. I would really want to see Toyota, Mazda, or Honda make a relatively affordable wagon. Toyota did make a wagon in the 90s, and Honda made the Crosstour a couple years ago. It would be nice for them to bring those models back

      @Maurice Lamont-Jackson I've had nothing but positive experiences with the brand. My family lives in the northeast and we despise SUV's so we've been loyal Subaru owners for ahile. I myself have a 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited and it's been great. It's hovering at 108,548 miles and other than oil changes, it's been perfect. All the electronics work, even the navigation and back up camera.

    One of the great things about the Outback too is that it drives and handles like a sedan. Doesn't feel too bulky or trucky, but still has plenty of room.

      True. I find that is feels more planted than the Forester. This may be due to the fact that the Forester is a lot more SUV top heavy like.

    Subaru not wanting to ditch CVT is fine with me. Then, just offer manual with 2.5L engines at the top Touring trim. I'd buy one right away.

      Problem is when they offered the manual in xv, forester, outback in Western markets like here in Australia very few people were buying them so they stop making manual available

      The CVT transmission gets so much grief, when in actuality, it’s easily the best transmission for snow and ice. All snowmobiles have CVTs for a reason. If your transmission has no shift points, the tires keep traction on the ground better. It translates to incredibly secure slippery driving. It’s actually unbelievable with good snow tires. You can blow past almost any vehicle.

      At the very least Subaru needs to offer a manual transmission option with a crawler gear like on the Ford Bronco to make it more appealing to perspective customers. A crawler gear would come in more handy when towing trailers uphill or the boat ramp more than in off road situations.

    I love the wagon vibe. I had a 2003 VW Jetta TDI wagon that I drove until I bought my 2020 Outback. As I age, it was becoming increasingly more difficult to get in and out of that low-stance car. My daughter has a (I think) 2017 or 2018 Outback. I was very impressed with her car, and after a long trip in the Jetta which beat me up, I went shopping. I was looking for a 2019 model, but all in my local area were spoken for. I ended up buying a 2020 (I know, never buy the first year of a new model), on the day after Christmas in 2019. No regrets. I love this car. It has had two recalls, one for the infotainment system, and one for the fuel pump. I work in the automotive industry, so I have some familiarity. Minor recalls are "normal". Both were handled by the dealer with no issues.

    Love this review. I like how you mention how not all of us might not want the turbo. The 2.5 engine is plenty for my liking.

      You are correct that the NA engine would be just fine for most people that just run around town. But for those that tow or travel to higher elevations the turbo ideal. The first time I drove up a mountain pass with my fully loaded WRX I was shocked how it just charged up hill at just a third of the throttle!

      I wish Subaru would grow some balls and put the STI engine in one of these and also the 2.4 turbo in the forester and crosstrek, at least in the wilderness models. I think they would be surprised at the demand. A 315 hp Outback would be amazing and they could probably catch the eye of the Audi market

    You don't see "a family wagon that is in VW Alltrack and Audi Allroad segment" in this review. As you don't see this signature of incompetence - it means you can continue to watch. I am a Subaru Outback owner and I am doing my own review - a series that last for about 5 hours. I must say this: this guy is the only non-off-road reviewer one should watch to get the real (yes, Realistick) information on the cars in this format. This reviewer has the brain, not just a tongue. Yes, the Outback is a compact CROSSOVER, that competes with Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and the similar. Is it that hard just to open the eyes and see this reality? For some it's a "mission impossible". But not for this guy as he also has eyes. Compare his reviews with (for example) Motormouth. It's a restaurant dish vs fast food. And these cookie-cutters pop up with every new car! I have my own vision of the cars, I have access to my friends' cars, I can examine a car (or borrow for a test drive) at a dealership. But if I need an external source of information - I will watch this guy, Engineering Explained and for off-road tests - Driving Sports Tv. Best wishes to you Tyler.

    I traded my 2018 Toyota Tundra for a 2022 OBW a couple weeks ago. Thirty seconds in to the test drive, I knew that Tundra wasn’t coming back home with me. Absolutely love this car! It’s a Jack of all trades, master of none.

      My friend purchased a 2020 Subaru Outback and had a major problem with the front dash screen. Their response was because they live in Florida where it’s hot 🤡

    No complaints with my 2020 Onyx. Acceleration from a standing start is a bit slow, but pick-up from say, 60-80+mph is very responsive. Handles really nicely too and is a very balanced drive. Stuck some Toyo ATs on mine and apart from improving the overall look, I’m surprised at how much more grippy the drive is now. No regrets basically. 👍👍

    Love my Outback Limited XT. Just took a long highway road trip, and it was great for cruising or passing. The entertainment system can be frustrating at times, when it seems to lock up and go nowhere fast. Then suddenly does 3 moves quickly as I have pushed more functions in frustration. Overall I love the car for its comfort and engine.

    Great video and excellent points, I can't seem to find a car that matches the comfort, fuel economy and utility of my 17 Outback Ltd. I think you just sold me on a 2023 upgrade! These cars are hard to beat when compared with competition even with the CVT.

    My 2015 outback has over 100 thousand miles, is it perfect? No, but it's reliable, comfortable, sips fuel and goes about anywhere! A demon in the snow, and it's paid for. I probably would buy another one!

    I love my 2019 Outback limited. My only complaint is tied to the electrical system. If for some reason I forget to turn off all electric components or accidentally leave the tailgate open or just not locked down, the battery very often is drained the next morning. I know some draws on it occurs all by itself but it takes very little to drain it to the point where it won't start.

    I bought the Wilderness mainly due to all the potholes that I have to drive through, and I confess, I do like the look. I was asked why I did not get a Jeep. I replied that the Wrangler (that I like) is out of my tax bracket and I am comfortable enough with my masculinity not not purchase a macho truck to only use as a suburban grocery getter with the occasional dirt road/fire trail trip. Besides, it is a great road trip vehicle.

    I build the outback and ascent. The issues early on were due to supplier issues. We have since then corrected the issue and the recall solved those problems as in I haven't heard anything since. Definitely a well built car compared to other manufacturers. There is a reason they all tour our plant. Even Boeing came if that helps

    I was deciding between the 2022 outback and the 2022 Forester Sport. After test driving both, ended up getting an Premium trim Outback because it's so luxurious for the price point. Best purchase of the year~

    Love my 2021 Green Metallic Limited! Only complaint is the infotainment. It can be laggy at times, freeze or totally reset. Of course these issues are never able to be replicated at the dealer. Great review and recommendation.

      I have a 2022 Outback Limited and find that the Starlink app is virtually useless. It almost never connects to my USB-connected Android phone, and even when it does the "available" apps in the Los Angeles area are not very meaningful. But I'm more disappointed with Android Auto because only a handful of apps on my phone are usable in Android Auto.

    I recently was looking for a midsize SUV, something like a Ford Edge or Toyota Venza, and for some reason I came across the Outback and damn! I really love this "wagon", drives like a car, has the ground clearance right, tons of space, visibility is amazing, seating height is just right, this car is an absolute beauty.

    I got a 2016 2.5 L outback. Love it! Spacious, fun and easy to drive with sufficient power if required. Also, very low maintenance cost and reasonably fuel efficient.

    Great review...as an owner of 4 Outbacks (so far) I can say it is a completely underrated car. In a world driven by virtue signaling many look for a more impressive logo....insecure bros....haha!

    My daughter bought a 2022 Impreza. Coming from the VW/Audi world, there is a ton of standard equipment on these Subaru’s for the money.

      I’m a fan of both brands, but my manual R had ACC and a pretty decent lane-keep assist back in 2016. Why Eyesight is only available in CVT is beyond me.

    Good review of various details. I was looking to upgrade my business drive with a Volvo V60 Cross Country but backed out after discovering the new Outback Touring XT which in my opinion beats the V60 overall for a much fairer price tag.

      @@N8RTH In terms of looks I like the V60 CC as well, but in terms of safety, power (if you get the XT which I did) and bang for the $$$ I went Outback Touring XT. Better off-roading too. I already have a Volvo XC60 and like the V60 but the $$ was hard to overcome.

    After 20+ years with a minivan and a 5-speed 1.8T Passat, we just bought a '20 Legacy Limited with the 2.5. My first CVT experience and I gotta say its is so similar to the Passat in size and configuration that I really like it, and the mileage rating is better! The engine 'growl' and the CVT are 'different' but the car is so nice I'm good with it - the new Subaru's have awesome safety features.. I still need a tow vehicle to replace the minivan and am on the hunt for an Outback XT (but not the Wilderness). Good video - if I can't get a '20 thru '22, I'll wait for the '23.

    Great review and yeah always thought of the Subaru as a Unicorn little odd and unusual but impressive cars. Intnensly loyal drivers as well. Tyler just discovered your channel loving the reviews binge watching and you impress me with your attention to details or quirks some other major reviewers might miss. Plus with you being 6'3" Finally a driver and a reviewer who is my height so your experience in the review models will be similar to mine.

    Well,I hope they put a more powerful battery. My battery went flat many times while camping, starting a few months after I bough it new (2018). Apparently, when the tailgate is open, it still uses power, even if the rear light is turned off.i was disappointed since it is advertised as a car for outdoorsy people.

    I love my 2018 outback, I'm a large person.. I have 2 large dogs.. the outback is perfect for me. The only thing I hate about it is, that lazy 2.5 litre motor. It NEEDS a turbo.

      Me too, although for 2023 they made the hvac controls a permanent part of the screen so you don't have to pull up an hvac menu.

      Oh and I have a 2015 Outback 3.6 and have had the issues with battery, windshield crack you mentioned, and the center screen randomly black screening (maybe once a year). I'd consider buying another but the HVAC controls through the center screen really bug me.

    Recently bought a 2023 Outback Limited XT. Absolutely love this car! Added the Ironman 4X4 2" lift kit and installed a trailer hitch. Car drives fantastic and is averaging around 26 MPG in town after around 1400 miles. I am totally pleased with my purchase!

    I have a 2021 outback onyx. Tragically bought it right before the wilderness came out but I have no complaints. Nearly as fast as a wrx, great for the kids and dog. Only thing I would change is wanting a manual. The CVT isn’t a disaster for what it is, but I don’t think I would call it good. But for 95% of buyers, they will be perfectly happy with it

    We live in north central WA state up in the mtns. We get 5-6 feet of snow every winter.
    AWD or 4WD is a must.
    My Rav 4WD is very good but my wife’s Outback is superior over my Rav.
    When my Rav wears out we’ll replace it with a Forester Touring.

    I have admired Subaru for a long time. Higher cost, higher car registration tax and higher insurance are what hold me back. The latest version of the Outback has become my dream vehicle. 😍

    I really like the front end of the 2023 refresh. I think it's vastly superior to the 2020-2022 front end. I also personally wouldn't bother with the 2.4 turbo. At these gas prices, it just doesn't make any sense to take that hit in fuel economy.

      As a WRX owner it's been very useful to have that extra power on tap when needed. Just driving up mountain passes with a fully loaded car is breeze at just a third of the throttle!

      The gas mileage hit isn't nearly as bad as you've implied. If you think the difference is THAT bad, you can't afford a car anyway.

    We really enjoyed our summer road trip in our Outback Limited XT. The adaptive cruise control made the drive relaxing and the turbo provided confidence for passing when you wanted. Lots of room and comfortable for my 6’4” frame. Ou nailed the issues - the battery, center information display, and windshield (though we've only had a small rock chip).

    Great review! Close to trading in my 2012 Outback for a 2023 model. If I do, it will be my 6th Subaru (1981 GL FWD wagon, 1985 GL 4WD wagon, 1992 Legacy L+ AWD wagon, 2001 AWD Outback wagon, and 2012 Outback AWD wagon).

    We got a 2022. I like the car overall but don't care for all the tech. From my experience, long about the time your warranty expires, all that tech starts to fail. I don't need any help driving my car, and I like to get in my car to forget about the constant bombardment of over-reliance on computers in my life. I hate that big computer screen in the middle of my dash. I would prefer NO computer screen. I also find the seats extremely uncomfortable. I still have a 2005 Outback and I find it way more comfortable, so they are going in the wrong direction. Love the 2.5 engine, but I'd scrap the CVT and opt for a manual tranny if I could. Also, for a new car there is an annoying amount of road and engine noise.

    My Saab 900 Turbo averaged 26 mpg. My Camry averaged 28 mpg. My Grand Caravan GT averaged 21 mpg. I have a 2022 Limited XT. It averages 16 - 17 mpg. Inexcusable.

      One thing that seems to cause a big discrepancy with it is if it is running around town a lot and not warming up entirely. I've heard that the XT mileage was all over the place, which is why I mentioned that, but that seems especially heinous.

      I have a 21 Onyx XT I get 29-32 around country roads (Upstate NY) However if k BEAT on it it never gets less than 18-19 😎Also took it on 10K road Trip to 19 states 25.9 MPG got as High as 13k a few times🤙🏾Very HAPPY camper❗️

      My '22 XT (done by hand & calculator) averages approx 21.9 - 23.5 with a driving mix of 70% suburban/urban, 30% highway driving. Obviously, you're one of those 'stomp & stab' (stomp the gas, stab the brakes) drivers. If you want good MPG from your Subaru, your driving technique is "inexcusable".

    Torqe is almost same as my 86 Crown Vic Wagon (1st year fule injection). Cars weight same as well. The Subaru does the 0-60 much quicker ~6 secs while the Crow Vic took ~10 seconds. Crown Vic is rated to haul 5000 lbs; I bet the Outback will haul 5000 lbs even though it is "rated" at 3500 lbs. The Subaru does have almost identical torque to the 5.0 V8 with efi. Oh, I just bought a 2023 Outback XT Touring. I love the feel of the turbo. I will let you know what it can tow.

    I watched a video comparing the outback to a Santa Fe and it was pretty interesting, both are a contender as my next vehicle. Currently have a 2013 outback with the less powerful engine, love it but want more power. Not sure if you’ve done one but would love to see a Santa Fe review.

      I have a 2017 Santa Fe Sport AWD, 2.5L inline 4 cylinder, leather interior, Car Play with only 25K miles. I like it as much as my 2023 Outback Premium with Option Pack 15. It does not have all the safety features with exception to blind spot detection but in 2017 other safety features were not available unless you spent a lot on upgrades. My Outback is not broken in so I can't yet tell the difference in MPG but my Santa Fe Sport gets around 24 MPG city and 34 MPG hwy.

    Best car for the money. The comfort, the equipment, the space, the refinement. Unbeatable. I just miss a 3 part rear backrest, which I hoping for, since my first Outback, and this is my sixth... All the rest, good to huge improvements, over the years. Including breaks. Except for this stupid turn signal lever... Really? Where does this appear from?

    This review was so comprehensive and 'sensible' I just subscribed to your channel! I have a 2020 Outback Limited. Lease is up in March 2023. Probably makes sense to just buy my 2020 at the end of the lease. But I really want wireless Apple CarPlay. Trivial I know. I'm not so sure that I like the new front face lift or wheels to be honest. The improved Eye sight is welcome but the current eyesight works well in my 2020. I wanted the Turbo before gas prices got stupid. I'll just stick with the 2.5 I think. Great review!

    I wish Subaru had a hybrid version of their cars much in the way Toyota, Honda and Hyundai do. I bought a Legacy Touring XT in 2021 and while I enjoy the car (such nice seats for long legs), but I'm regretting it now that gas prices has skyrocketed. I wish I'd gotten an Accord Hybrid or Sonata Hybrid. I've actually been shopping for one after just a year of owning the Legacy.

      Yeah I wish they did also. The only thing they have is a PHEV Crosstrek with a what's the point 17 measly all electric range. The battery pack was placed in the trunk area which raised the floor and reduced the already puny cargo space even more. On top of that you could only get it in a handful of states.
      I was thinking of getting the gas Crosstrek because of the size for daily commuting and weekend trips but changed my mind because the trunk space is too small. It's probably only barely big enough for two people packing lightly without a cooler. Sure you can fold down the seats but I don't want my stuff out in the open. And that brings us back to only enough room for two people packing lightly you fold down the seats for more luggage then then where do the other people sit?
      Well back to the Outback. I considered the Outback because although the Crosstrek is smaller and has better mpg and easier to park, it's limited trunk space would of rendered it pretty much an in city commuter car for me and not for trips. I considered the Wilderness model but the mpg isn't great. Also it didn't have cooled seats of which my wife wants. We considered Subarus because where I live we get all the nasty weather conditions. We wished Subaru had a hybrid or PHEV Outback also. We have a Hyundai that can get 50 mpg on a good day and it's hard to go to something that gets less than that now.
      My perfect car would be a PHEV that gets at least 50 miles all electric range of which it will pretty much run on all electricity as a daily driver and as a hybrid on long trips without being tied to chargers like an all electric vehicle.
      The sad thing though is that the larger the battery the more the cost added to the vehicle. Say if you were going to pay 45k for a gas vehicle and there was a hybrid that costs about the same then yes you would save money on gas. But if you were going to pay 45k for a gas vehicle but decided to pay several thousands more for a hybrid or electric vehicle then you may not be saving money at all. You would probably need to keep that car for an average of about 6-7 years just to break even to make up for the thousands extra you ponied up. Some may argue you save money on oil changes but they don't mention that the low resistance tires wear out faster and cost more than regular tires for example.

      Same here. After only driving subarus for 20+ years we had to move on. Several wrx's 2003-2015, an sti, 2 baja's, outback, forester..... But we got a Kia Niro this year, similar to a corsstrek but it's a plug in hybrid that gets us 95mpg. They do make a crosstrek hybrid but don't sell it in our state. Subaru is falling way behind, many automakers offer hybrid/plug in or full EV versions of several models. Subaru's model lineup is 30 years old now, they update the engine and transmissions every 10-20 years but gas mileage is never great and their cars are more expensive than the competition.

      @@bubbalo3388 We bought a Kia Niro PHEV, 30 miles EV range, so that gets us upto 850 miles per tank and about 95mpg since we charge it often. The crosstrek phev was a very poor attempt at a hyrbid.

      @@SkaBob I considered the Niro at one point as it was about one of the few PHEV'S that was available in my state.
      The last generation Chevrolet Volt PHEV before it was discontinued had about 50 miles or so all electric range enough for most people to get to work and back and run errands. So basically you would hardly ever run on gas. Sadly it wasn't big enough for my family and it was a little pricey for what you in size and options.
      The only reason I considered a Subaru is because I have a Yukon XL of which is not a practical everyday driver and wife doesn't like driving it and I need something my wife can drive in the winter and sometimes we take it to the beach or off the beaten path and it may be just the two of us where I don't need to take the Yukon. But the Subarus 35'ish mpg is not great by today's standards. Guess it's a tradeoff for the off the beaten path capability.

    Nicely done. I'm on my 4th Outback. Each had the 2.5L which is plenty strong IMO. Have a 2020 Limited and it gets less in-town mileage for some reason. On the hwy it's great though. I'm thinking of a 2023 for the additional safety. I hope the lane hold is better working too.

    Owned an Outback for a decade- Subaru is the official car of Maine. The AWD system was rough on brakes- dirt roads clogged the rotor pads. Reliable but not my most trouble free car- that’s an Toyota Avalon.

    I bought a Certified Pre-Owned 2022 Outback Limited (a dealer loaner vehicle) two months ago and am extremely satisfied with it. Not sure that the 2023 upgrades would have factored into my purchasing decision if it had been available at the time. I get better than stated MPG under most driving conditions.

    I love Subaru and only drive them, but disagree with the last reason. Subarus are reliable, but not the cheapest cars to service. Toyota and Nissan, for example, are cheaper vehicles to service and also reliable. I don't keep Subarus past about $120k, starts to get too expensive to do preventative maintenance at that point. They will certainly last that long. Another thing I've noticed on the more recent Subaru Outbacks (2010 and afterwards) is that Subaru has cheaped out on the paint quality, it chips more easily over time in sensitive areas like the edges of the doors.

    Here in Australia, we've had Outbacks since 2001 and would never purchase a different vehicle. I still have my 2020 3.6L, but we'll probably switch to the Solterra.

      @@100M2B I don't disagree. Supply and demand pressures make me want to allow it when considering 2019 dealerships were thriving selling cars below MSRP, and "fair is fair,". But market forces were also expected to start slowing things down, especially from traditionally affordable brands like Kia. Instead those brands show the highest mark-up of all.
      Could it be that the business world doesn't care about principles?

    Absolutely yes without turbo. Had one, would never get one again. This has the best placed touch screen that I've seen on any SUV. The interior is beautifully designed. I really like the Wilderness model. It's too bad that it gets abysmal gas mileage for this size vehicle. That's a no go for me.

    Need a new H6 engine. Luv the motor in my wife's Outback 3.6R! I'd rather have naturally aspirated HP over a smaller engine needing turbocharged to get the same power but that's just me.

    Bought my last Subaru Outback in 2018 last 3.6. It is my second 3.6. Had a loaner 2020 while did a fuel pump recall. The four vibrated it just wasn't the same. After 2 3.6 subies I am off to Toyota land if I outlive my subie.

    Excellent review, the strengths resonated a lot with my experience! - I have a 2018 2.5 Touring, smoothest, quietest car I have ever driven.
    Something reviewers ignore these days (like yourself) is "drivability" - its the feeling you have when you get back into your car on a long journey, a feeling of satisfaction you feel as you drive... intangible stuff relating to how well a car starts to feel like its an extension of your body itself. Frankly its this or maybe a Tesla for my next car but I still love the sound of this engine! I'm going all-in on the 2023 2.5 Limited Edition. My only gripe if anything is that they could do something sexier to the look, but I get that it should retain its distinctiveness. Most non-engineers dont understand how special a boxer engine is on an AWD, how its perfectly balanced not like most upright 4 cylinders which need special belts and tweaks to damp secondary vibrations. A similarly equipped RAV4 for example just feels cheap by comparison. For gas milage I recently got 37.9mpg in Winter, driving from Toronto to Chicago at 65 mph.

      Have you had any problems with your windshield cracking? I've read many complaints about that happening for no good reason and Subaru NOT taking care of it. I think that's my only hesitation in getting an Outback. What's your feelings about having owned one for 4 years now?

      I had a Rav4 and I just bought the 2023 Outback touring. Both are good choices. The Rav4 hybrid gets 40 MPG, the OT is a very luxurious ride. Tough choice, good luck.

    Test drove an OB touring. Beautiful plush interior. Plenty of space. My only concern is the windshield cracking. How common is this in the real world? I’d be getting a ‘23. Have a ‘21 forester and no issues so far.

      Subaru has already announced the hybrid system for the WRX STI due to the auto uproar of the electric system. I'm sure at this rate in the next 5 years most new cars will be either hybrid or pure electric.

      @@wanglee21 Smart move by Subaru to do this being how they have that partnership with Toyota. Toyota's hybrid systems are pretty much the best in the business and if Subaru can capitalize on that then, they're going to be moving a lot more vehicles once they add a hybrid powertrain. An Outback Hybrid or Outback PHEV would be a great addition to Subaru's lineup.

      @@payrocoin 2023 Subaru Solterra They already have a production car made with Toyota for AWD Electric. They did say it performs better then the Toyota AWD system. Yes I feel there immediate response from electric cars is a very big trend. I would prefer they Hybrid systems over pure electric. Until the day they are able to fully charge batteries in under 5 mins, will I ever consider pure electric.

      @@wanglee21 Very good points. The Solterra is actually better than the Toyota BZ4X so, Subaru knows how to make great cars. Yeah, I'm not ready for a full electric vehicle myself and my requirement for considering one is that I need for it to be able to do at least 500 miles per full charge.
      An issue I can see Subaru having with "hybridization" is trying to integrate an electric motor setup with a boxer engine given the properties of a boxer engine. This is of course IF they try to stay with boxer engines.

    I'm looking into either getting an outback or a crosstrek. I live in a very urban city and don't take the highway that much, I also don't care about speed so I don't mind having a 4 banger, but my parents are so concerned about how I NEED a v6 for an suv. I told them that I don't think it should matter at all and I don't want to spend the extra money on something that will make me get up to speed a little bit faster. My parents also want me to get the Limited of any subaru I get just because the limited will be more expensive for resale than the premium. But I also don't really care about that, I don't need the "best" stuff on a care, I'm not a picky guy. My budget is also under 20k which is why I could get a 2016-2020 premium outback/crosstrek with 50k-70k miles for around my budget. So my question is should I listen to my parents and get the more expensive version of a car because it's better for me and the resale value will be better in the long run, or should I go with my gut and spend less money on a "not so great" suv wuth a 4 banger premium?

      The crosstreks are trash. lol. Had 4 of them that I drove at my old job. I would take them into the mountains on windy roads, and they didn't feel stable. Crosstreks feel better and more responsive. At the end of the day, you want a comfortable car if it is going to be slow. The crosstreks also had a few transmission problems.

    Just traded my 2015 Outback in for a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy. The Santa Fe is miles ahead of the outback in amenities and quality, imo.

    Warning - don't buy the XT unless you drive 100% highway. Yes, at 65 mph for the entire tank of gas I get 30.5 mpg. Otherwise 17 or 18 for mix highway/suburbs, and that's with feathering the throttle and keeping tachometer below 2,000 rpm even when accelerating. Have taken car to 2 Subaru dealerships and both say the car is operating to specs and that it's a heavy car with full time AWD. Every XT owner I talk to at the dealership says the same thing. They struggle to hit 20 mpg. Extremely inefficient engine/transmission.

      From what I've gathered, the biggest variable is the distance. Shorter distances around town, these don't warm up and are really inefficient. I say that because it's not a problem everyone is facing but it is prominent enough to where it does deserve to be mentioned when talking about the XT.

    The Outback is listed as towing 3500#. Any comments on how well it does that? Surprisingly the ones I’ve looked at don’t have hitch receivers installed.

      That's a good question for the forums, I haven't towed with it, 3500 is for turbo models only as well! The hitches are never installed from the manufacturer with the Outback, it's a 700 dollar accessory from Subaru, or you can get an rv shop to do it for like 300.

    It's easy as fuck to get into/out of, which is nice as I get older, and is supremely comfortable on long road trips. The acceleration in the 2.5 NA engine is like punching a pancake, as someone described it during a test drive, which is why I opted for the six (previous generation touring), but loved it. Here in Australia, I think I'd be content with the NA engine instead of the turbo, especially because there are more speed cameras than kangaroos, and less complexity and greater fuel economy.

    Subaru Outback 2.5 CVT 2013 , 40K replace short block, 100K replace cvt valve body, 160k head gaskets. I did all required maintenance during the cars life. Subarus can be a problem. Do you like problems?

    Yeah windshields with the sensors mounted to them can be an expensive fix. A regular windshield with no sensors cost a few hundred dollars to replace. On a 2021Sonata limited which has the sensors mounted to the windshield, replacing and recalibrating can cost close to 2 grand. I know from experience. You better have good insurance that covers windshields.

      @@Realistick They are referring to the fact that the Eyesight system uses front mounted cameras that look out through the front windshield. If you ever have to have your windshield replaced on a Subaru with Eyesight, the actual glass replacement costs about $500 or so, but then you have to have a "recalibration" of the system done for another $500+. (Some glass replacement shops can do this recalibration as well-- Safelite even mentions it in their TV commercials-- but none of the ones in my area can do it- they will tell you straight out it has to be taken back to the dealership- and they won't let you retake possession of the vehicle until it is done.) Some insurance companies will also not cover this part of the replacement, even if you have glass replacement coverage. I've often wondered what this "recalibration" actually involves, and why it's that expensive.

    Wouldn't compare the Outback to a Mazda CX-50. Drove one - hard riding, kinda crappy interior, and sluggish (I'm being kind). The one thing that Mazda CX-50 got right was the handling - nicely done.

    As an owner of a 2011 legacy 3.6 and a 2017 outback 2.5i dont get a subaru. So much crap has started leaking after the warranties, my lights are always messing up(either flickering or going out regularly), switches stop working for who knows what reason, idk front windshields seem like they shatter at the smallest rock(3 broken windshilds...insane) also their city mileage is pathetic. I only get 24mpg out of either one on a regular basis. Legacy i have a 80%hwy/20 city commute, the outback is about 60/40. Sad when a sienna/highlander can get 36mpg. Im getting a mazda cx-90 next

    How would you say the ride comfort is compared to an Acura MDX? She has a spinal injury and the Ascent beat her up comparatively to the MDX. We want to switch to Subaru as we live 3 miles down a dirtroad and need a vehicle thats rugged and smooth riding.

    Reliability sucks. My Forester started burning a lot of oil at 100,000 miles. My wife’s Toyota RAV4 is still running like brand new at 140,000 miles.

    Great car but the fact they eliminated all knobs is a deal stopper for me. For instance to turn on heat seater you must go through 2 slow screens. All Havac controls need to go through the screen. What I don’t get is the Outback is supposedly a very safe vehicle but your forced to take 10:03 your eyes off the road to access basic functions on the screens during driving.

      I don't like the change but not all controls are embedded into the screen and you do at least get volume and tune knobs. Plus they updated the little bottom portion of the screen to have heated seat button available at all times! It's not ideal and I don't really like it but credit where credit is due you know?

    I've have a 17 forester and it's been a very reliable suv. I've had to replace the front axle and ac compressor but giving it has 130k on it. I'm on my 4 year with and I can say that subaru biggest flaw is the cvt. When it's new you tend to overlook stuff but getting onto the freeway you need a good running start. Passing other cars can be a chore and at time scary on long trip on a two lane. The turbo on the outback from what I hear cures that. I do love the awd system its very good in the rain. Unfortunately it's not enough to keep me from getting another subaru.
