I just bought a 2022 Wilderness this week and I'm so glad I found your UA-cam channel. I'm learning a lot about my car from watching your videos. I just remotely started my vehicle for the first time. Feeling great about my car.
As someone who will likely be purchasing a Subaru in the next 12 months, I would be very interested in a video that talks about specifics of the extended warranty plans and the service plans. Specifically talking about what each one covers and a price (I know prices may vary). And even touching on what parts (if any) the extended warranty overlaps, or adds to the factory warranty. Love your videos, wish I could buy one from you!
Top notch video. Thank you for putting it together. I'm eyeing the Touring XT, but I don't think anyone could go wrong with any trim level ... as long as it's turboed. 😁 I know there is a redesign slated for 2025, but I don't know if I can wait that long.
Thanks Alex for your quick response. I really appreciate your videos. My question about milage was in error, what I wanted to know was if the Onynx had tire pressure monitoring system. Mine does not. I thought all vehicles made in the USA had it. Should I have it as well?
Thank you! After weeks of reading, driving, and trying to review these trim packages, your video really helped me see and understand the different options. I was leaning towards Onyx XT before watching and after your review, I think I'm sold. Thanks again!

I have a 2018 Outback Touring trim that I absolutely love. Last year, I drove 8800 miles from California to Maine and back and my Outback behaved beautifully. I also take my Outback camping every year. I camp where there are bear issues, so my coolers stay in the back of the car. When I’m in my campsite,, I like to leave the tailgate open for easy access. However, I really can’t because the when the tailgate is open, the car draws power for the power lift gate and other features. It would be really great if I could turn that off so I don’t draw down the battery. I had to have my Outback jump-started the first year I had it.
Hey there Janice, I have a 2016 Premium, which has required a handful of jumps from dead. The two things I've done are: 1. change all the interior light bulbs to LEDs, which use a tiny fraction of power compared to the regular bulbs, plus are MUCH brighter/whiter. win/win 2. change the factory battery to a higher capacity battery. Do a search. As for me, I installed a Costco/Interstate 24-700 (Group size 24, 700 amps). I was told a Group Size 24 wouldn't fit but it fits just fine in the factory battery tray since the tray is larger than the factory battery. It doubled the amps of the puny factory battery (~356 amps). My Outback starts with more authority, especially at the ski resort. There are probably other choices. win/win 3. I've read you can insert a carabiner into the tailgate latch mechanism when it's open, fooling it into thinking it's shut. I haven't tried this, but plenty of owners say it works great. Just remember to remove it before closing the gate! 4. Always carry cables! 🙂
Nice vid, thanks! I love love loooove my '22 Outback Limited X/T! My advice to prospective purchasers is, check your finances before you test drive the turbo lol - you WILL want it! Not that the regular engine is bad by any means (my '13 Premium with the 2.5L was just fine), but the 2.4L turbo is just too much fun. This thing gets up and goes way faster than any station wagon has a right to lol. And the '22 is quieter, and the headlights that turn with the steering wheel are just awesome.

I have an 18 Crosstrek limited. I’m eyeing the OBW but what annoys me is you can’t get the HK sound system in it like I have in my Crosstrek. I guess they think if your out in the wilderness you should be enjoying nature and not your playlist. The HK system is decent but not great however it far better than Subarus base stereo the OBW comes with. Nothing like dropping another grand or two on a brand new car to upgrade the stereo to what it should be
Great video--so thorough! Only thing I could use more explanation on is the difference in the body styles of the 2 that you showed in the beginning of your video. One looked so much smaller than the other that I was sure it was an older model. Could you elaborate on why it is smaller and what trim level hosts the smaller body size?
Hello Alex--Purchased a 2024 Onyx Outback which was built in Japan. Because of where it was built I don't have a couple of things you mention in this video. No navigation app, no milage monitoring, no extended drivers seat. Just wondering if I should have some of these anyway? Can you give me your opinion. Thanks -----------------Ron
Hi Ron, as far as I know, the Outback is only produced at the North American plant. If you're curious, you can check the inside of the door jam and it will show you where it was produced. Should say SIA which is in Lafayette, IN. The Onyx doesn't come with nav or the extended driver's seat. mileage monitor will be located in the center between the speedometer and tachometer. It does however have nav capabilities through Apple CarPlay/Android auto. Here's a video I made recently on this: ua-cam.com/video/ttI9GVh5gow/v-deo.html
Just subed, I'll be getting my '22 Outback Wilderness how much weight are the "tow hooks" rated for? I wont have mine till February :( also which system does the AWD use? I know there are like 5 different systems Subaru uses.
Would you say the turbo is worth it? I’m thinking about trading my 2020 Tacoma for an onyx. Need a more practical family vehicle. I just would hate to give up my v6 for a flat 4. I would really like the turbo. Just a lot more money
The electronic parking brake will also release if you’re in gear and press the gas pedal. I have a base 2021 Legacy and prefer the dual screens. It’s less distracting and seems more reliable. Can you do a video on the Legacy’s?
I really regret not keeping the Subaru Forester Unlimited Customization Kit brochure. Or buying several boxes of them. They are great collector's item for any Subaru owner.
How are you liking the 2.4T compared to the 2.5 NA? I'm looking at getting the 23' Onyx but now it comes with the 2.5L options so I'm torn between the two because of gas mpg lol
My wife and I are trying to decide between the 2022 outback limited xt and the touring xt . What do you get in the touring that you don't get in the limited? Thanks for all these videos they are much appreciated!
They're both very close in options. The Touring gets you the ventilated front seats, front view camera, brown nappa leather, power foldable mirrors, satin chrome mirror caps/roof rails/trim pieces. The Limited will not have these options.
Thank you for the exceptional, informative videos. I have a 2021 Outback that I just love. Question, behind my self dimming, w/compass rear view mirror there is what appears to be an empty socket hanging down available next to the glass. It’s hard to see into but I think I see maybe 5 pins. What is this for? Any chance it could be used to power a dash cam? If Subaru sold one, I’d buy it. Or better yet, add that functionality to Eyesight and let me add an SD card for storage. Any thought you might have about this appreciated. Thanks Steve
I'm actually not sure what that is. As far as I know, there isn't a way to power anything from it. It would be cool to incorporate some sort of dash cam into this in the future though where you could easily recover video from a wreck.
Thank you for all of your videos! I got the '22 Touring a couple of months ago and love it. Just wondering...does the Touring trim have a full sized spare with matching rim on it like the Onyx and Wilderness? I guess I could just go and look😉lol.
Hey Carol! So the Onyx and the Wilderness are the only trim levels currently that have the full size spare. I think it's because these are the two more off-road style Outbacks and Subaru probably expects you'll have a greater chance of needing a full size spare.
The Subaru wilderness is one AWESOME piec.of metal. It's quick safe and extremely comfortable. Beautiful geyser blue......go and check it out. LOVE the wilderness
Greetings, I want to buy one here in Spain, around here the models are called: Trek, Field and Touring. My question is if in addition to heating in the seats does it have ventilation? or just heating? In Spain it is hot hot in summer and I want to know if I will have a cold back. Thanks for your channel, greetings from the Pyrenees
Thanks! so the base model is the only trim for the US spec that doesn't have tinted windows. All other trim levels have rear windows and the hatch window tinted.
Hey, Alex (and other Onyx owners). Do you know anything about this? I have a '21 Onyx Edition and the owner's manual says that if you have a full sized spare (which the Onyx does), then you should incorporate it into a tire rotation (5-tire rotation). My dealership refused to do this on my first free oil change. They tried charging me $100 to do it. They said that to do this, you have to reprogram the BCU each time, which costs them $ to do since they need to hook up a laptop, upload the BCU's data, and reprogram the tire sensors. Not reprogramming the BCU will cause the TPMS light to stay on at all times (or keep coming on if cleared) and the reprogramming is due to the spare tire having a "temporary" TPMS sensor in it (which I've never heard of). Before the Texas winter storms hit last winter, I got a nail in one of my tires and had to swap to the spare because (it turned out) the dealership couldn't get me a new tire until the storm passed. (They kept closing early and then shut down completely during the storm, which is somehow ironic to me for a Subaru dealership... this was even before the power grid issues). Yes, I had the TPMS light come on after the swap, but I was able to use a $99 OBD scanner (Bluedriver) tool to reset the TPMS system and it then worked fine for an entire week and a half until I got the tire replaced. So, any idea if my dealership is full of BS? The car manual says to do a 5 tire rotation and I seem to easily be able to reset the TPMS system in about 10 minutes max. Why are they trying to charge me $100? (I argued with them about it and they eventually did it for free alongside my free maintenance, but it was "[that] time only.") I'm planning to just rotate my own tires now and have them do the free maintenance, but specifically tell them not to touch the tires. I just feel like $100 just to pull a tire out of the trunk is ridiculous because I don't believe the whole reprogramming claim or the "temporary" sensor claim.
I’ve read several owners mention the leather is ‘hard’. I’m happy with my 21’ Forester premium cloth, but have considered buying an outback with leather. Haven’t sat in one though. Any thoughts?
The Touring trim has a softer leather than the Limited. You can also opt for the Onyx or Wilderness trim on the Outback that has a soft material called startex (looks and feels like leather) but it’s a water repellent material made out of recycled materials.
I test drove a Touring yesterday with the brown nappa. No beating that soft plush feel. What do you know about new Outbacks windshields cracking? My last and final hang up 🫤
Recent subscriber! Love the vids! I am a little confused on this vid.. i just purchased an Outback Premier (Canada, getting this week), and it has almost every feature (Napa leather, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, upgraded speakers, etc.). This vehicle was coming into the dealership, and to order another would take months. Only thing I would have preferred would be the turbocharged engine. Are the trim levels different in Canada?
Thanks for subscribing! Yes, the trim levels are different. From what I can tell, the have them same features but they call them different trim levels. The premier trim is actually the touring trim here in the us
I totally agree that the Onyx XT is the sweet spot in the lineup because there aren't any 'gotta have it' features offered in the trims above it, which makes it the best value in the outback lineup, in my opinion. I've been cross shopping the Forester Wilderness and the Outback Onyx XT for a while, leaning toward the Forester because of its compact footprint and excellent capability. However, given the fantastic 2.4 turbo engine and the relatively modest $3000 price premium over the Forster Wilderness, the Onyx XT keeps calling me.
Nope, they still have all of the same functions as before. We’re actually expecting production levels to be normal in the spring. Hopefully normal inventory levels will follow a few months after that.
Absolutely in love with the wilderness edition I got a few weeks ago. I was worried when I was buying it that it would come with the distraction mitigation package. My friends '21 outback has it and I just thought it was annoying most of the time.
Glad you're enjoying your wilderness! I'm not a fan of the distraction mitigation either. I do however like the facial recognition for saving memory seats though (this is part of the same distraction mitigation feature)
First I'd start by looking at your interior. Do you have leather or cloth? Cloth with heated seats = Premium trim. Cloth without heated seats = base trim. Leather interior could be the Limited or Touring. If you have ventilated a/c seats, it's a Touring. If not, it's a Limited. Hope this helps!
Yes, once I get another one in. At the moment we don't have any 2019 Outbacks. It's fairly similar to the 2020 and newer models. One of the biggest differences is that the 2020 and new Outbacks have the 11.6" touch screen display, while anything before this has the smaller touch screen display.
I love my 2015 Outback. Might think of upgrading to a newer one if the darn ONYX would have a heated steering wheel option. :( Why not Subaru, why not?
This was a terrific video. I just ordered my 3rd Subaru, a 2022 Outback Touring XT. I am trading in a 2021 Ascent Touring and a 2015 Outback 2.5i Limited. After watching your video I am even more excited about the Outback. BTW, there is/was nothing wrong with either of my Subaru's. The Ascent was to be my spouse's vehicle and my spouse passed away 3 days after we took delivery. My current Outback has no issues, I just took advantage of the crazy auto market and maximized the trade-in value. My Subaru's have performed the mission they were purchased for excellently.
Does the onyx have anything other than the 2.5 turbo engine that justifies the additional towing capacity? I'm asking because I'd like to use a motorcycle hitch carrier to tow my 259 lb dirt bike on a 2022 outback premium. That's well within the premium's 2700 lb towing capacity, but would be slightly above the 270lb tongue weight rating when combined with the 40 lb weight of the hitch carrier itself. Thanks for any additional info
Is there a way to order a wilderness with upgraded touring features? (Paying extra, of course). In a perfect world, the touring would have the higher height, dual cams, hex patterns, etc as well, but maybe next generation?
@@alexpmo interior color preferences aside, I would love if the Wilderness came with the distraction mitigation system, as well as the high beam assist and 18" tires, although the tires are just me nitpicking lol. As someone with sleep apnea, that driver focus alert is worth the extra $. Stack those on the Wilderness' front cam & ground clearance, and by George, we've got a winner! 😂 I can live without the ventilated seats in NYC, so the Forester is definitely the one for me over the Outback 👍🏿
@@NeeNee_B. yes, unfortunately you can only get the driver mitigation and Napa brown leather interior on the touring trim 🙁 I’m sure you could upgrade to the 18” wheels on the wilderness but the eyesight might need to be reconfigured. Not 100% though. I’m also a fan of the 18” wheels which is why I prefer the Onyx XT over the Wilderness. I think they look so much better
@@alexpmo Do you think the next generation will include the driver focus on all trims, or in your experience, will that will probably remain a higher trim offering? I'd be willing to wait another year for it on a Wilderness.
There used to be a rockford fosgate upgrade but Subaru did away with it for the 2022 model. The sound quality is very good in the regular sound system they have now so I think that's why they did away with the upgrade.
@@alexpmo I just purchased a 2022 Onyx (Autumn Green). Love the car but the sound system is quite inferior. My friend has a 2017 Forester XT with the HK speakers, which are much better.
Every trim level gets dead batteries and cracking windshields. Subaru came out with these features in 2013. And since then they have added the Eyesight system to drive you nuts and more recently they added a bigger screen where you have to scroll through menus to do basic things that used to only require the touch of a button. Why did they wait so long to come out with these features?
If you want a smaller car with slightly better mpg but still want the benefits of all wheel drive, safety features, and the ground clearance that comes with the outback (they're the same). The price is also less for a crosstrek and for those who want a manual transmission can also get that in the crosstrek (not available in the outback)
Got the 2024 limited XT last week, I can say I’m the happiest man on earth rn 😊
2022 models starts around...
1:00 Base
5:54 Premium
8:20 Onyx
11:15 wilderness
12:58 Limited
15:26 Touring

Yes, waiting to get another one on the lot!
I really regret not keeping the Subaru Forester Unlimited Customization Kit brochure. Or buying several boxes of them. They are great collector's item for any Subaru owner.
I own a 2021 onyx xt and I've never had a better vehicle for all around ability
How are you liking the 2.4T compared to the 2.5 NA? I'm looking at getting the 23' Onyx but now it comes with the 2.5L options so I'm torn between the two because of gas mpg lol
Great review. Any idea if the wilderness will be offered on the Ascent in 2023?
Not sure yet. Hoping so!
I was wondering the exact same thing
My wife and I are trying to decide between the 2022 outback limited xt and the touring xt . What do you get in the touring that you don't get in the limited? Thanks for all these videos they are much appreciated!
They're both very close in options. The Touring gets you the ventilated front seats, front view camera, brown nappa leather, power foldable mirrors, satin chrome mirror caps/roof rails/trim pieces. The Limited will not have these options.
What security ? Once Parked will be still there in the morning ? ....John .Perth Western Australia .
Great job. Helpful information. Would you please make a video on the 2022 Outback Limited model. Would really appreciate it.
Thanks so much.
Josh
Yep, I just have to wait for another to arrive on the lot.
Great video!!! Thanks so much
great info thank you
Great Reviews! Thank You!
What's the difference between the Subaru and the base Mazda CX-30!?!? Whats the base model price!?!?
Thank you for all of your videos! I got the '22 Touring a couple of months ago and love it. Just wondering...does the Touring trim have a full sized spare with matching rim on it like the Onyx and Wilderness? I guess I could just go and look😉lol.
Hey Carol! So the Onyx and the Wilderness are the only trim levels currently that have the full size spare. I think it's because these are the two more off-road style Outbacks and Subaru probably expects you'll have a greater chance of needing a full size spare.
Hi Alex, I purchased a 2022 outback, pre owned. how do you change home address on navigation
i look in the future for touring i like brown inter its will be nice to see wilderness with touring option
The Subaru wilderness is one AWESOME piec.of metal. It's quick safe and extremely comfortable. Beautiful geyser blue......go and check it out. LOVE the wilderness
Yeah, I don't like blue cars, but that blue on the Wilderness is beautiful!
Quick question please can I install wilderness leather seats on my premium both 2021 are they the same except the leather and cloth ? Answer please
Thank you for this! Super helpful!
Could you tell me how the window tinting varies across trim levels? Is the base model totally untinted? Very helpful video! Thanks so much!
Thanks! so the base model is the only trim for the US spec that doesn't have tinted windows. All other trim levels have rear windows and the hatch window tinted.
@@alexpmo Thanks for the fast response! That'll help convince my wife to move up from the base trim haha
@@spidersugar and all have heated seats but the base lol
According to Subaru us website, Outback 2022 base modal has LED fog light
Yep, that's correct! For some reason I skipped over that in the video. All 2022 Subaru Outbacks have the LED headlight and fog lights.
(I argued with them about it and they eventually did it for free alongside my free maintenance, but it was "[that] time only.")
I'm planning to just rotate my own tires now and have them do the free maintenance, but specifically tell them not to touch the tires. I just feel like $100 just to pull a tire out of the trunk is ridiculous because I don't believe the whole reprogramming claim or the "temporary" sensor claim.
Very interesting! I’m looking at the Onyx because of that extra tire! Thanks for the info!
Is the Wilderness edition the only trim with a 9.5 ground clearance?
yep, that's correct. All other Outbacks have 8.7"
I’ve read several owners mention the leather is ‘hard’.
My last and final hang up 🫤
great video, thanks!
The premier trim is actually the touring trim here in the us
@@alexpmo Wow, thanks so much for the prompt reply and great info!
Great job on the videos.
Thanks Brian!
Great video
Alex, thanks hou doe your uitstekende uitleg over deze SUBARU Hartelijk dank.
You're welcome!
Which, if any, trim levels have acoustic glass and in which locations?
Limited XT and Touring XT in the front door glass
Do all 2022 outback come standard with rear passenger air vents? Heard it was optional on certain premium trims and above.
All but the base model will have the rear air vents.
However, given the fantastic 2.4 turbo engine and the relatively modest $3000 price premium over the Forster Wilderness, the Onyx XT keeps calling me.
best car of the world
Do you have a similar video on the Ascent trim levels and capabilities (towing)?
Alex, has Subaru started rationing chips and reducing functions in vehicles as a result of the shortage?
Nope, they still have all of the same functions as before. We’re actually expecting production levels to be normal in the spring. Hopefully normal inventory levels will follow a few months after that.
Great video
Thank you👍
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Carlene
Not a fan of electric parking brakes. But I do like my 2022 Outback so far. Nice ride.
I bought a used outback 2018 how can I tell what trimester mine is.
Alex lovely video
Thanks Sujeet!
Does the Touring come w/full size spare tire?
Only the Onyx and Wilderness come with full size
Will the front view camera be available on upcoming foresters? If so, what trim levels will include it?
For the Forester, the front view camera is only on the new 2022 Wilderness edition.
Can you go over the 2019 Outback. Our 2018 was totaled in a broadside accident and we were able to find a 2019 Limited to replace it.
Yes, once I get another one in. At the moment we don't have any 2019 Outbacks. It's fairly similar to the 2020 and newer models. One of the biggest differences is that the 2020 and new Outbacks have the 11.6" touch screen display, while anything before this has the smaller touch screen display.
Does the 2020 Onyx XT come with LED headlights?
Yes, all 2020 Outbacks have the LED headlights
My most sincere condolences on your loss
So sorry for your loss 😥
Happy to hear you were able to get into another Subaru that you like. Enjoy!
Still trying to figure out why Subaru doesn't offer the Onyx in Canada...
The base model its good enough for me
Hi Alex-- disregard my comment on milage monitoring, what I meant was no tire pressure monitoring system!
Which features are you asking about specifically?
@@NeeNee_B. I’m not sure but I’d expect Subaru to keep it an exclusive on the higher trim levels only. I could be wrong though!
I am thinking of getting the Onxy XT, but music is important to me. What kind of sound system does it have? Is there any upgrade?
There used to be a rockford fosgate upgrade but Subaru did away with it for the 2022 model. The sound quality is very good in the regular sound system they have now so I think that's why they did away with the upgrade.
@@alexpmo I just purchased a 2022 Onyx (Autumn Green). Love the car but the sound system is quite inferior. My friend has a 2017 Forester XT with the HK speakers, which are much better.
Maybe this is a dumb question but if you plug the phone into the car and put it on the wireless charger wont it hurt the phone?
No it works just fine. It won’t hurt the phone and it charges the phone as well.
Peter is right. Should work just fine while it's plugged in and shouldn't cause any problems.
but I like the fluttering lights... can I get it as an option?🤣😂
Hi! Can yoi please do one for 2022 Impreza hatchback limited? Thanks
Yes, once we get another one in. Might be a while unfortunately 😅
Educate yourself.
Why would someone buy a Crosstrek over an Outback? (Serious question - I'm considering them both!)
If you want a smaller car with slightly better mpg but still want the benefits of all wheel drive, safety features, and the ground clearance that comes with the outback (they're the same). The price is also less for a crosstrek and for those who want a manual transmission can also get that in the crosstrek (not available in the outback)
does the bose sound system come with the outback limited without adding the 11.6 inch multimedia package ?
Yes, all new outbacks in the limited trim come standard with the upgraded Harmon kardon speakers. So you have it with or without the optional package
Now prices just need to drop below those with small house and I might actually be able to replace my old one.
