Hey guys and welcome to Episode 7 in this No Experience Van Build Series. Today was another big job done as I installed the Max Air Fan Deluxe which will defiantly be a great addition to the van. It means I can finally start to cook all sorts of smelly goodness inside without having the smell of onions lingering around for days like I had in the Galaxy hah. I got the fan from leisure vehicle services who were a great help and I would highly recommend them for any parts you need in your conversion.

Use masking tape around the surround of the window put your silicone or silkaflex on ,then remove tape nice clean lines.🤗
Ha lol just wa I was going to say . Funny enough iv just bought masking tape for the same reason 😅
Yes, or painters tape. This is the general best technique for straight and clean caulking, in your bath or your Fiat Ducato.
Thanks I’ll give this a try
@@WillsWhereabouts also use turps to clean it after applying it. to clean it nice and smooth. Use a rubber gloves with the turpes to get it extreemly smooth. After that remove the masking tape.
Hi Will i'm loving this Van build series please keep the video's coming.
For nice straight line when using silicone ect use masking tape all around so that it looks like a frame & then apply the silicone.
To give you a smooth finish mix some washing up liquid and warm water in a jug (about a quarter full) dip your finger and smooth it over the silicone keep dipping as you go & you don't need to press on.
Once the silicone is dry then peel the masking tape off.
Hope this helps.
All the best.
Not going to lie nearly spat my drinck out when that frame fell down. Loving the build fella
😂😂😂
Trick to getting a neat finish with sealant is instead of using a spatula, get some spit on your finger and run it along the bead of sealant, sounds strange I know but learnt it when I was an apprentice plumber 😂
Just finding this after being hooked on Greg Virgoe's excellent van series...As some one just planning to do a van conversion this is gold!!....Greg, this is how you do it... Will, ya beauty , o shit..Haha.....this is how it will be for a lot of us...Brilliant stuff Will.
I’m a motorhome technician and use sikaflex everyday. Less is more in my eyes mate. If you need any advice give me a shout… happy to help. Keep up the good work
Mood was down for some reason
Just saw your video now I feel better
Glad I could help 😀
Love from Nepal
Watching you muddle through, learning new things is great fun. Really enjoy your videos. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
Love it. Total calamity.
Oh happy days!!!
8:30 That antique motorcycle...
Your videos are the only ones I watch that make me feel emotions like fear 🤣make me laugh out loud and pride when you find the solution to all the issues you come across. Keep up the hard work, your an inspiration 😊
👏🏻 great job, your definitely more confident and it’s making your work a lot easier for you, well done mate🤜🤛
I could watch you all day, love that you leave your blunders in, it's what makes you relatable, I'm learning but also cracking up with laughter at the same time.
Cheers your new Subscriber from Down Under
Mate, your absolutely bonkers and I love watching your videos.
I just installed a maxxfan on my lwb sprinter inspired by your video.
I was very nervous about cutting a hole in the roof, but your and Greg virgo was a great help x
Although you seem to say that you don’t know what you’re doing, you are also coming up with some excellent ideas, for instance the plastic sheeting/bag that catches the metal swarf
Squirt some mastic up in the ridges on the inside, between the wood and the ceiling. If you can get it in deep enough it will make a seal with the mastic you applied on the outside, and help prevent any drips coming down.
WELL DONE WILL, SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE, LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT VIDEO.
Hi loved the video you show the real van building with worts and all
the the only builder I've seen goes out in the van why building great!
Thanks Bill
I started watching your video while you were stuck in Nepal in the lockdown and yeah it has been amazing experience watching you since then . your videos are joy to watch . love form nepal .
Hi Will, great video,it looks FANtastic LOL,you have done well for the first time fitting.it works perfectly.
That was great! Your confidence is showing more and more when you're doing your build! 👍 And if you look at rv videos where they show the roof, their sealant is also blobby and smudgy. I guess it's the texture of the product.
Thanks Martine
*Absolutely **_smashing_** Will!!!* - You can be proud of yourself! 👌
Your a legend doing this work.. id never trust myself doing all that lol.. keep it up dude!!!! This van build is going to epic!!!
Drill bits with a point usually for wood
Masonry bits have a spade end
And as for silicone, you can get a mastic tool and use masking tape to get a good edge
Good luck with the build
These videos are getting better each week. Proper excited with each job thats getting ticked off. Nice job with the fan mate.
Appreciate it Rav
Nice to see this van build coming along. When using silicone, or decorator's caulk first use a Stanley knife and cut the end of the nozzle off at an angle, about 45 degrees, and about 5 to 10mm from the tip. The further away from the end of the nozzle, the wider the bead of silicone will be. Then, to get it nice and smooth you could go with the old-school method which involves spitting on your finger and using it to smooth over the silicone, or I guess water with a little washing-up liquid would also work. Good luck with the rest of the build.
Thanks for the tips Adam I’ll give this a try next time
Best thing on UA-cam so entertaining. Some great kenny Everett diy man bits, honest information
tea time!
awesome update!!! another sunday another great video. :)
Thanks Simon appreciate it
Such a satisfying moment when you connect yr Max air Fan to the power and she bursts into life
😍🚐💨
When using sealant, wear surgical gloves, dip a finger in a tub of water, and run your finger along the bead of sealant.
Usually gives a nice neat edge👍
Add Washing up liquid to the water as well
Good work! Great shorts.
You’re doing o brilliant job, the van’s coming on really well 👍
Well done Will…I’ll be a lot happier when you’ve finished clambering around on that roof! 😳🙏
Haha so will I
Great job mate 👍🚐
Some crazy thunder storms and a raging hangover.. This video is exactly what I needed 👏
😂😂
Dip your finger in some water and use your finger to make the mastic neat.
Spit works better with very little pressure.
When I need a solid straight line when smoothing out caulk, I use a good brand painter's tape
Fit a small fan in the floor, and on super hot days park in the grass (longer the better), instant air-con, the air is 5-10 C cooler.
the white van man now has a fan. looks really good. make sure that it is sealed. be safe have fun keep moving.
you are doing great mate, just take ya time and good luck with it!
New to your channel. Just dido on the safety glasses etc. A pro knows enough and cares enough to do things slow, safe and careful. Good luck my friend
Had similar fan in my camper trailer let’s a lot of daylight in so no sleeping in! Made up a blackout curtain for inside the van when fan not in use
Try getting a cheap one inch paintbrush, shorten the bristles to just under half length with a pair of scissors then dip in thinners/white spirit and brush over the wet sikaflex... doesn't give a smooth finish but gives a neat brushed finish much like the seam sealer underneath the vehicle's body. Excellent videos by the way... can't wait for the finished project!
Mate your updates are bloody awesome , love watching!!!!!
Cheers Shaun appreciate it
Great Job!
That's your biggest fan, Will :D
you could have used metal roofing screws they have rubber washers built in so you don't have to seal them, or you can buy little round pre caulked vinyl dots - also used for metal roofing to put over the screws so you don't have to caulk them. rather than sica flex you could also have used a liquid roof coating like snow roof, which may have been a little easier - however all that said, nobody's gonna look at your roof, that's a tall van! and if its not leaking then you did a good job.
Dude tape up then apply sillocone the spray with soapy water and use your finger to smooth out perfect every time. 👌
You are doing amazing, love the van build series!
Cheers James!
I'm a Fan of this van build 😁
I told you before to cut the end of the tube to agood angle with a Stanley knife so you get a nice finish.
I did cut the tube hah
Love this series!
Looks great!
Oh Will. Very entertaining van built. Very much enjoy watching.
Cheers Todd
Looking good Will 👍❤️😋
Nice break from my own DIY project.....thanks
Thanks Eric 😀
You’re inspirational mate 👍🏼
Hi really enjoyed seeing your van project really looking forward to seeing your next video keep safe 😷👍🏻
Great job mate 👍..l must say will .
That van is brilliant.great choice ..
Id love one ,but for now I still have my Cosy astra van
Been to Norfolk and that Cotswolds in the last few weeks..😁
I'll try and share a short video of van soon
when you put the silicone down a lil bit of washing up liquid on your finger helps smooth it right out
Well done will another good video keep them coming
Way to go Will!
Looking forward to your next stealth camping 😊
This is comedy gold! Good on yer Will 😆🙌🏻
Made it early this time! Live you build it's making think I could build one without experience, now just the money part lol
For sure you could
Smooth off any silicone with a finger wet from your warm soapy water. It finishes the surface really nice. Don’t worry about the surface getting wet as it’s a warmer proof seal.
Hey buddy
When you seal with any sealer and want a pro finish. ..use masking tape strips on top an bottom of work area. ..seal and smudge product in and pull masking tape off for a clean line. Hope it helps. Cheers
Hey will have a great weekend and stay safe. Thanks for uploading this video and today is my birthday looks like i got best present from you.
Happy birthday mate
@@WillsWhereabouts thank you will
Wet you're index finger in water and run along the silicone 👍
You run your finger over the Sikaflex to give it a nice smoothed off look.
Great tip! Also add some washing up liquid to your finger when running it along.
I was about to say the same thing
I’ll give this a try next time
That fan looks awesome you did really well installing it looking forward to next update
Cheers Chris, loving the fan
@@WillsWhereabouts no probs the fan is awesome
Good job well done. Looking down from above onto the fan casing, if you extend out by 5-10mm and go round the perimeter of the fan casing with masking tape, you can then put a bead of the sealing compound all the way round. Smooth it out with a wet finger, only go over it once. Remove the masking tape and you should have a nice smooth edge all the way round the casing. Please always wear goggles
With regards to the sikaflex, or any type of sealing to be honest, if you making tape around where you want to seal then take the tape off it will look a lot neater. With regards to the the ice gem look, you can spray simple washing up liquid and water onto it and then on your finger, and rub them down. Keep spraying your finger on each one. Hope that helps
Love these videos.....I wouldn't have a clue so living voraciously through you😉. And burst out laughing when wood bit fell down.....
Another great video !!
🤛🏼🤛🏼
Coming along nicely cheers 🍻
I used to work at an RV shop and it is VERY difficult to make lap sealant (Sikaflex) look good, takes lots of practice. What's important is to start with a clean surface and then ensure that your seal is complete, including over the screw holes, and from what I see it looks like you did it right. If your fan assembly has a reverse setting, you can use this function to create positive pressure inside the van and then spray soapy water around the seal. If you see bubbles, you'll need to touch up the seal. (You can also use this method to check the windows you installed.) Also, if you find that you need to remove any sealant, there is a chemical called Hexane that is excellent for this, although I don't know how easy it is to get it in the U.K.; you need a permit to buy it in the U.S.
Think you were suppose to say while you are doing 70 down the motorway! 😄😉😄
😂 my vans limited to 67 anyway so I can’t even make 70 hah
Good job Will
Absolutely smashing it mate. You'll be fully fledged handyman after this build haha
Haha let’s hope so
Put a glove on and run your finger over the sealer. You could use masking tape to give you a nice clean edge finish. Sorry Will shouldn’t laugh but it’s fun watching you do this. Max respect for getting the job done 👍🏻
Nice one will keep the videos coming 👍
Cheers Michael, will do
Love build coming along nice 💪
Use painters tape offset off the desired line first. Then finger in soapy water (or spit) along to smooth the sealant. Let set up a little only and remove the painters tape.
Awesome Will it is like Knight Rider cool!
Your the business mate 👍
You need a Fuggee kit for that silicone - hands down the easiest solution, better than tape, better than wet fingers etc etc. I'm crap with sealant and even I can make it look good with the fuggee blades
Superb !!!!!
ITS COMING HOME LAD !!!!!!!!
It really is
@@WillsWhereabouts yesssss fella smart roof van 👌
From Saudi Arabia, keep it up
Masonry bits usually have a carbide bit soldered in the tip. They are basically made to crush and channel the dust out. Metal drills have distinctly different geometry that varies repending on the metal you are drilling; stock sngles are fine for typical materials. Metal drill bits can have different colors depending on hardening process used, surface treatment etc.Titanium nitride gives gold-like finish that, if done correctly, gives good wear resistance. Cobalt alloyed drills are overkill for your jobs, but they are nice (and usually more expensive) - carbine drills are so expensive that the pain in your wallet keeps you away from them - and they are not for hand drilliing anyway as they break so easily (very hard, very brittle).
Wood drllls come in all kinds of weird shapes; usually the ones in the kit have somewhat straight head angle and spike in the middle as drilling guide.
Another cracking video buddy
Cheers Chris
Lovin it mate :) keep em comin :)
Wooden drill bits have a spike on the tip, masonry drill bits have triangle shape on the top and metal drill bits are generally just pointed
Love from NEPAL bro ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Id also skip the screws. Glazing adhesive (polyester stuff) is good enough for bonded windows so it should hold a plastic roof vent.
Prop the wood spacer off the floor with some vertical battens while the sika stuff sets overnight,
I use some plasterboarding telescopic supports. Cheap to buy and work a treat. !
Good job well done Wil x
