Should raise the fridge up from the floor by adding a spacer sheet of timber so it’s sitting just below the top beam with small gap for flex, that way if you have a future water flood on the floor it’s not going to affect the bottom of the fridge

Could just place some plastic/rubber feet underneath so that any damp can air dry or be cleaned under with rags. Timber will rot and likely smell as it absorbs dirt and moisture.

You are also really helping future van builders from making mistakes through inexperience by showing how not to do it, then what you've learned and doing it better. You've also got loads of subs giving advice. Thanks mate keep them vids coming.

Will - just to add to the chorus - that 'cupboard of death' really worries me. You have Gas, water and electricity all mingling without a care for safety. Also it is worth remembering that a fridge is actually a heat source (the compressor system that cools your fridge actually puts out heat at the back !) and it puts out most heat in warm weather. Do you want that under you bed where the diesel heater is and your batteries ? Please get someone with experience to check out you build for safety sake.

    • @jujuUK68
      @jujuUK68 2 роки тому

and when the compressor is running, you'll probably just get a buzzing under the bed all night. Fine for the girlfriend when the rabbit's out of batteries.... but otherwise... I'd have put the waste water and gas under the bed and the fridge handy for cooking with more room to swing it open. Then it might be easier to both arrange them safely, with venting, and also accessible from the rear.

I’m in complete agreement with all those comments re drop hole, and proper gas locker and such.
Just so you know propane and butane are heavier than air and so any escape of LPG will fall to the bottom of the gas locker hence the need to ventilate to outside.
One other thing you should not connect the rubber hose direct to the smooth pipe on the underside of the hob as there is nothing to stop the hose sling off over time. You can buy a purpose provided fitting that has a ridged or bulbous end the same as the connector on the regulator. Personally I would use a short piece of soft copper from the hob into the adjacent cupboard then use the high pressure rubber hose that you have to connect to the regulator.
Really the best way to make sure it’s done right is to get it done or at least checked by a gas certified engineer. Be mindful that your insurance company may not cover you if you don’t have it certified. Ask them !

  • @robbblair6289
    @robbblair6289 2 роки тому

Still loven your build. But few suggestions. 1 move that propane tank to the very back. Build a box around it, and drill a hole so if you have a gas leak it will go out of the van. Propane gas is heavy so it goes downwards. 2nd get a carbon monoxide sensor installed so you don’t breath in fumes while sleeping. 4th of course run a longer hose to the tank, make sure its free from debris. 5th Move your cook top over. It’ll give your water underneath more room, and like you said makes washing dishes, or chopping food alot easier. Turn your fake drawer into a holder for your washing dish soap, toothbrush area, so you utilize every space. The drawer can bend down to open a tiny bit, place a small shelf in it like a V-shape.
Great idea with the fridge! Maybe add some over head shelves or cubby’s for more storage space for food, clothes, etc.

You should add a vent tube to the top of your waste water & fresh water tanks so that the water will flow in & out better. A quick fix for the counter problem would be to make or buy a cover that you can put over the stove & use it as a cutting board or additional food preparation space.

  • @Beranicus

DISCONNECT THE GAS! Without a sealed gas cabinet, cutoff (for when driving), and drop out it's illegal, and depending on what European country you are off too you can face some pretty hefty fines. You can get pre done metal gas cabinets which would be easier, maybe mount that under the bed and connect through under where your seat is going between the bed and cupboard?
Other than that, it's looking sweeeet!

Building a van with no experience is probably the most stressful thing we've ever dealt with (given the time it takes). It's mistake after mistake, rarelyyyy getting something done without running into problems and multiple trips to the hardware store. You thing you know how much time a van project will take and you're almost always wrong... by a lot. That being said, it's literally so worth it. It's the best feeling when it's done (or done enough) and you're actually on the road doing your thing. Biggest takeaway for us was, "expect it, accept it, and move on."

Would also have advised copper piping and a stainless tail to the gas bottle. And for insurance purposes checked and signed off by a qualified gas fitter.

Great learning curve. Not sure now you have fridge under bed whether your pull out table still exists. But if you’re getting a new worktop, as you said putting the gas hob further to the right. Why not have the worktop go as far as your bed thereby giving you a night stand at bedtime. You could put a stool underneath so you’re able to use as a table/bar to eat/drink too. Also keep in mind your hob atm is very close to the window, with a pot or frying pan on top the flames will lick beyond. Could be dangerous. Maybe turn the hob sideways. So the burners sit side by side giving you space behind. The longer worktop would make for a prep and/or drainer area between sink and hob with yet more space to the right of hob for dishing up and/or eating when on your own. I can’t wait to see your next travel video, making use of all your new space. Awesome stuff!

The Full Clean Water Container will need securing top and bottom as water is heavy ... 1,000Kg per cubic metre. The stick on child locks are unlikely to be strong enough to stop the water container moving around, especially if you go off-road ... and the cupboard door will likely break open.
(The Grey Water Tank and the Gas Cylinder should also be secured at the top, or they'll likely fall over also).

1 your gas is supposed to be in a sealed box with a drop out.
2 when you turn your gas on only turn the stopcock half a turn (reason being it's easier to turn off should you have a problem).
That said you've made a great improvement to the overall usability of the van

Further to other comments re the gas installation, which I agree with ie metal cupboard, drop vent, secure strapping for the tank, improved pipe connections etc, given your impending trip which will likely mean you don’t have time to implement these changes, suggest you turn off the gas at the bottle when you are not using the hob, also add some more temp strapping to hold the tank in place.

Think you’ll be happy as time goes on with your placement of the stove. The pans are closer to the sink if things get out of control, the splashing/popping of juices or oils while cooking will stay off your linens not being so close to your bed and the window to stove placement is perfect for ventilation. Trust your gut and first instinct 🤙🏼🤙🏼 excited to see the progress. Cheers!

I would move the sink to the far side closest to the bed so you can use the top draw in the van and all your propain and water is not crossing over to the draw section

Shouldn't your sink have been over the containers and the hob over the drawers? That way the hoses go straight down and the hob doesn't impede the drawer function?

Have you thought of doing a tip-out drawer below the sink? Hinge the drawer to open from the top, have it stop halfway, and then have a small tray that allows you to store sponges. (it's called a tip-out drawer in the states, not sure if it is the same in the UK).

Hay dude bring the fridge forward a bit , otherwise you’ll not be able to open the door properly once you’ve put on the cladding, also if you’ve some extra ply make a simple box around the back of the fridge otherwise any thing you have in the garage will bang into it every time you put on your brakes . Nice videos. ,spring will be here soon and we’ll all be able to enjoy our vans

Will, put 2 vertical boards inside kitchen cabinet attached to work top.
The drill holes through cabinet and board with the inside board with vertical slits. Release worktop then use grip bolts to attach worktop between side of cabinet and worktop
You can now level worktop just buy releasing and tightening side bolts.

It's terrifying that you have an LPG bottle in the van like that mate. Extremely dangerous. Needs to be in a proper sealed box with a hole in the floor so any escaped gas can go down through that hole. What you did there would be illegal here in Australia, and cost you a nasty fine. Hope you have a good trip!!

Will I’m not the only person to say this. For safety reasons you need a proper gas locker with a special lining on the inside a proper gas bottle holder and not a bunngy cord and also in the corner on the floor of the gas locker a hole as a vent for any gas to drop out of the hole can be toped off with mesh to still allow any gas to drop out but to stop and bugs etc crawling into the van.

And what's important is how you correct a "mistake" which is really just a learning experience.

Will, in France, regulation says that propane should only be used (and stored) outdoors. For indoor use, butane should be used instead. Not sure what the regulation is in the UK but might be worth double checking.

Well done mate. Enjoy your trip. Great idea to test everything first before you finalise everything. Yes you need a gas trap/drop thingy. (correct technical term) but that can all be done later once you decide on final positions etc.
    Garage area is looking good.
Also nice to see the Berghaus jacket back for while instead of the new Rab!!
