Silent Hill 1 is just as good as Silent Hill 2 and I'm tired of pretending that it's not.
I prefer 1 and 3 tbh
@@ethanoliva2262 Same.
I think no fans think otherwise. 2 got mentioned alot sure, but the same people who liked 2 and talk about it, in my opinion, never thinks that 1 or 3 is not that good. so you're good. many fans thinks that also
Hell yeah
1 and 3 are definitely scarier games, 2 really isn’t. I think the story and symbolism is better in 2, but 1 and 3 are harder and more in line of survival horror
This is a pretty good tier list, but I really don't think Silent Hill 4 deserves to be that low. For all of its frustrations, there are so many cool and unique elements that make it one of the most memorable entries of the series in my opinion.
yeah, much as I hated the escort mission angle and found the ghosts obnoxious, I also feel it's one of the best stories they've ever told, and it has some REALLY unsettling enemy designs and REALLY big scares. It's the kind of game that could benefit hugely from a remake because it has great ideas marred by some poor execution.
I'm just super catty about it lmfao! That's entirely fair! :)
Unique elements like backtracking and shit level design in general.
It is a game with cool, fun ideas that could have been more explored, but at best it has serviceable gameplay until THE POINT when it just gets dumpstered. If there is going to be another remake, that would be my pick since there is lot that could be salvaged (plus since it is a polarizing entry, no one would really throw a fit if they changed things more drastically), but that will never happen because no publisher remakes games that are bad or just alright.
It's hard to gauge for me. It's the only Silent Hill game I've played from beginning to end and while I enjoyed and terrified me, its issues are serious.
The low polycharacters in the realm of silent hill of Matt and his guest was awesome and clever
I hope the autumnal Autumn Ivy collaboration becomes a tradition in the flophouse.
👍
A dream certainly
So cool you got Autumn Ivy as a guest! She's an inspiration to me as someone who wants to get swole, and she seems really personable in everything I've seen her in.
XOXO!
The first SH game was special because it was the nexus for video games being able to effectively tell a psychological horror story. I think that gets lost in a lot of conversations. The game was special for the time, place, and limitations it overcame. It existed in RE’s shadow too, so that took some time to get past as well
I will always remember Silent Hill Pachislot being the opening for James Stephanie Sterling's "Fuck Konami News"
Hit the lever!
my biggest problem with homecoming is that they HAD a reason to make the game more action-oriented (alex being a soldier) and then decided to make a big reveal that completely ruined that in-universe reason for enhanced combat (alex actually had a psychotic break after indirectly causing his brother's death and was hospitalized for many years after). like it was RIGHT THERE, but the obsession with twist endings absolutely kneecapped the story.
The monsters are not always designed with the protagonist in mind. I hate that SH2 got it in peoples heads that the monsters are related to the protagonist. SH1 the monsters are made from Alessa's tortured psyche. SH3 its Claudia, SH4 its Walter, etc. And even in SH2 not all the monsters are from James' psyche, some are Angela's and Eddie's.
in SH3 some of the monsters can totally be attributed to heather. But which monsters are Eddie’s?
@@scary_fu There are a lot of "dead bodies" when encountering Eddie. Could swing that he is his own monster.
thank you I just said the same thing in another comment lol SH2 really retroactively ruined SH1 and it sucks because 1 is my favorite :/
That's quite the content warning. We're in for a treat.
Welcome to Silent Hill lol
Giant face outside during the Silent Hill 4 segment caught me off guard. At least it's not breathing suggestively.
I DON'T WANNA IMAGINE THATTTT OMGGGGG hahaha
There was a cut haunting where Eileen looks back through the hole with her head twitching and it’s probably the creepiest one in the whole game. I can see why it was cut.
I love the insights from the two of you. Sure, there's plenty of silliness to make the video fun, but you both clearly put a lot of thought into your rankings which made this a great one to watch. 🎃
I am here for all this long form content! Thanks Matt and Autumn Ivy!
What a great editing this video had! Great job of the editor
Matt next year can we please get a tier list of Simpson treehouse of horror, I need 3 hours of you quoting and laughing about the Simpsons
I agree but it might be difficult to show any extended clips compared to peppering them as gags in his normal videos. mostly because of Disney :/
I'm fully interested in Silent Hill f for the sole purpose of Ryukishi07 being the writer.
Man, the custom avatars in these type of videos are getting elaborate. Also kudos on having Ivy as Cybil, that's perfect casting right there.
Ryukishi07 writing a Silent Hill game is inherently interesting. It being set in rural Japan during the 60s is also a fascinating place and time to set a horror story for a myriad of reasons. That trailer is full of really creepy imagery. So I'm cautiously optimistic...the least committed kind of optimism!
I gotta say, I think that the perspective of SH1 is skewed thru the lens of SH2 a little too much here and in general in the fandom at large. the story was not really that much about Harry grieving his wife or anything like that so much as it was about the supernatural aspect of Cheryl and the order and the traumas of her past incarnation, Alessa. the monsters were not borne of Harry's issues or fears, but Alessa's. she was afraid of dogs, so dogs were enemies. she didn't like bugs, so bugs were enemies. she was bullied at school, so that's where the grey children come from, etc. none of those monsters reflect Harry at all and maybe not even Cheryl as she was at that point per se. it was Alessa enacting what little power she had over her situation, given her abilities, and Harry, being unknowing of Cheryl's true form, sort of just bumbled into it by virtue of Alessa trying to lure her "other half" back to the city, due to her mother's fanatisicm over the order cult. Harry and Cybil were the only two who were "lured" to the town and Cybil was the only one where it was purely by happenstance, as opposed to Harry taking Cheryl there for an trip. no one else in the town that's able to see the horrors happening was "lured" there in the same way people seem to associate with the series anymore. they were living there (or in some cases, had died there) and Alessa trapped them for one reason or another or the order was fucking shit up for their own purposes. there was no special reason the monsters looked any specific way outside of Alessa herself, and there was no variation between them based on the viewpoints of those trapped there (as was the case in SH2). the game was about *her* and not Harry.
as much as SH2 was impactful upon its release, I really do think it retroactively ruined SH1's story and themes as viewed by fans. they *want* SH1 to "mean more" and have these really deep bits of symbolism or purpose, or by contrast, they write it off by saying it's "bad" because its story is admittedly very straightforward by comparison to SH2.
the point is that SH1 has really not that much to do with Harry as much as SH2 had to do with James. Harry was a good father looking for his child. James was a murderer who was brought to the town because Reasons.
the town was not meant to be any sort of entity in its own right. it has always been the way it was due to Alessa's powers and the order's shenanigans. I truly think SH2 was never meant to be in the same universe as the first game and, like Matt said, it would have been much better if each entry was an entirely different take on the location (yes, even SH3, which is my second favorite in the series after 1).
it just watered down the concept of the series entirely and gave the entire fan base this weird brainrot of needing to find "hidden meanings" behind the monster designs or the environments or the notes you find. that sort of thing worked in SH2 because of the twist about James and then going back and seeing the symbolism in a new light. it doesn't really work in any other entry, imo.
Sh2 was amazing, I remember kids at my school telling me about the story, the mystery about Mary's letter, at the time a creepy setup like that back then was very new. The visuals were stunning, I remember seeing commercials on TV for it and blew my mind as well as drove my imagination crazy. I ran to the computer and started looking it up on gamespot lol. Then I proceeded to save money until I could afford a ps2 just to play that game. And I was not disappointed at all. Is a masterpiece.
2:07:48 I completely agree with the editor here (though I recommend Eyepatch Wolf's summaries).
The writing was terrible to begin with. Nothing significant happens for the first half to two-thirds of the run - it's practically all filler. Old guy who probably offed his wife starts dating a serial killer - and it doesn't matter. The cult decides to have an orgy, and it's the most unimportant thing ever. Characters get written out and it doesn't matter. Heck, even player made characters get added as sometimes semi-important side characters, and it doesn't matter even though they often look as goofy as hell. It isn't until the kids go missing that anything sort of important happens. The two main stories are incredibly similar and barely interact with each other (they don't even cross over until halfway through he run). Most of the significant parts of the story development are crammed into the last few episodes converging into an amazingly unsatisfying ending where THE worst person gets redemption somehow (thank you whales). And the dialogue...ugh. It's so awkward and unnatural coupled with the uncanny valley models it's almost laughable except it gets so tedious, repetitive, and downright dull at points. The monetization is just the crap icing on the shit cake. It deserves a ZERO for being a poorly made, poorly written, ill-thought-out cash grab.
Nobody does better tier list than the Flophouse.
Silent Hill 2 utterly shattered my idea of horror games when I discovered it. 3 is very solid even without having finished 1 (I never solved the damne piano puzzle. I needed to wait until we had a walkthru on online) but 4 left a bigger impression storywise on me but daaaaaamn did it need more work. Grown-up Walter Sullivan could have been such a great antagonist to interact with Harry the Claudia way was with Heather. I hope it gets a remake with that idea. I wanted to like Origins but it just felt like an off brand Silent HIll clone. I haven't played any of the others but I'm good with that.
4 was my first so I’ll always have a soft spot for it, scared the hell outta me.
Always a fun time to see Autumn Ivy, the Muscle Goddess, grace us with her presence =)
And also thanks to Mommilph, for popping in with your editor notes to give us both context and some cute cosplay -_^
I love these tier lists. Plus we get Autumn Ivy as a guest. ❤
Same 🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️💕💕💕💗🌸
:* Happy to be here!
A phenomenal team-up!
I'm a simple man, if the 1st 3 entries are in 10 star rank, (bonus points if SH1 is 1st) and I approve. Has debateably my favourite story, some of my favourite characters in Alessa, Lisa, and Harry, and atmospherically argually my favourite competing with SH3.
Nostalgia hits hard but I till feel genuinely SH1 alleyway is the best intro to a horror game period. That, the school, and Hospital transition are pinnacles.
Got a good chuckle when y’all finished ranking the arcade game, said you’re halfway through the list but there’s only three games left that you have anything to say about, only for me to check the runtime and see that I was just over an hour into a 3.5 hour video 😂 can’t wait to see where it goes though! Shattered Memories is one of my favorites so I can’t wait to see what y’all think of it
Silent Hill Ascension is a video game but like...in the least way a thing can be.
So I ended up watching super eyepatch wolfs “play through” of the game, and I’m sill utterly flabbergasted that one of the characters does a cult orgy and it’s never brought up again throughout the end of the story.
Nothing more spooky than a ranking list
I love this video diverging into a impromptu DMC video on its own with matching music lol
I was lucky as hell, I bought the first Silent Hill after school at a Kmart on clearance. I still have that disc today. I would 100% agree with you Matt I believe Silent Hill did better wit individual stories.
Callin’ it now, Matt places Book of Memories triple-S tier!
4 does not deserve to be that low should be at least a 6. I love the paranormal concept and to this day I’m scared to play that game because of the anxiety it brings running from ghosts and pulling escort while being stalked by Walter.
I have no problem with the tone and ambient but the second half of that game ... ugh. i cant.
4 for me was killed by its controls, camera, and hit boxes. if any of the games deserves a true remake (besides 1, because shattered memories doesn't count imo), it's 4.
too bad they would end up giving it to bloober team would turn it into another modern RE clone 😑
Awesome video, I love the passion you both have for this series!
Wait wait wait wait...
SILENT HILL 4: THE ROOM 4 STARS?????
what was the brief music video thing during the 4 section? can anyone explain that?
Your Rain (Rage Mix) from Dance Dance Revolution Extreme
I know this was a dream collab for Matt.
Ascension shoulda been put in 0 stars and short message shoulda been 2. Cause at least THE SHORT MESSAGE WAS BLOODY PLAYABLE
just started the silent hill franchise the other week, and will be playing silent hill 2 on ps2 on my birthday soon! its nice to be able to watch videos now, even if i just get to stick around to hear people talk about the first one ❤
Must watch later when I am not busy
THE COLLAB I DID NOT REALISE I WANTED LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
I'd love to see an SH:O analysis by Autumn Ivy, because I really like the game, and I think it has some missing threads that the community haven't really tried to talk about because they hate the game. Underrated if you consider what it tried. For sure is derivative, but it has some interesting things.
Thank you for this fine tricking treat
The Silent Hill 2 remake completely blew me away. My only criticism was that I thought a few of the cutscenes were handled a bit worse than the original but everything else about the game was absolutely stellar. It fixed the lacking enemies from the OG and actually made them legitimate threats instead of minor nuisances that you can just run past. Pretty much all of the boss fights were greatly improved from the OG. And the dreadful atmosphere was unlike anything I had experienced in a survival horror game before due to the meticulously detailed environments as well as the immersive sound design.
Great thing to wake up to and relax in bed after a long night hehe. Another awesome October, thanks Matt and everyone else that was along for the ride
Spoiler:
I'm guessing, Silent Hill f has to do with Aglaophotis, introducted in SH 1 and 3; which expels evil or parasites from hosts. It's a red herb, which f seems to be hinting at.
Wow...Autumn is very pissed through The Short Message x)
Dropping this video at midnight.... Great... Didn't plan to sleep anyway 😂
Midnight? You're like 7 hrs ahead of me heh.
@@nickgarcia1292Greetings from Germany 😁
@V0rish hello from u.s. hope you got some 😴
I always tell people that there are three and a half Silent Hill games.
Ascension is available on the streaming service Tubi. Enjoy lol
This a good Halloween treat 🙂
Happy Halloween
I was half paying attention to this while playing vampire survivors, and i noticed during a lull they were talking a lot about devil may cry and i had no idea how we got there
Its sad my first silent hill was 4. Luckily it got me to play the earlier ones.
3 was the best.
yooooo the best crossover of all time, love autumn
I think 4 gets a bad rap but it was so lacking on the other elements because they made it to be more action forward which for the series is a misstep trying to chase the RE series but imo it would be a 6 giving it a fair review I think though the horror elements are tied to the apartment itself those scares are some of the best in the series
I think no one else in the theater noticed that tease at the end of Revelations because that movie was so goddamn horrifically awful that by the end of it the audience was either totally zoned out, or they just didn't care anymore.
There used to be some hate towards Bloober Team... Now some of it its gone.
2:40:00 So Dante will now have the voice of Zero ?! I had no idea.
I like to think somewhere between the suffering and downpour is a great game
24:20 Henry's the most boring Silent Hill protagonist. "I just happened to rent an apartment a serial killer's obsessed with" is not a personality.
2:20:13 Anita sounds like the Hannah Baker of Silent Hill.
Yay. Another one for the sleep aid playlist
shout out to the editor, fantastic cosplay
For me, when the production moved to the west, SH lost its subtle creepy Japanese-ness. The inclusion of legacy monsters made no sense because they were meant to be specific to the protagonist and not just ‘monsters’… I also felt it like RE, fell to just be combat driven and more ‘let’s make it gross’ then telling a long compelling story
I'll watch this when I can, can't wait.
SH2 is the pinnacle for me because it focuses entirely on the psychological. No Order. No ongoing sequel lore. No fighting combos. No Walter Sullivan uzis. It's the bare minimum needed to be a fun game, while still retaining a deep, thematic narrative that's still being dissected today.
and yes I was born on the last year of the 90s
I am very happy to see Silent Hill Origins make it rather high on the list! Appreciate the spooky season grind Matt. Great way to send it off.
I'll still lean towards 3 being the best overall.
James may never be redeemable. He's looking to make amends but that doesn’t mean he is redeemed. Its only been 3 weeks and hell, he had his dead wife in the back of the car. He killed her at the last time she would at a place she knew as home. He's remorse unlike Eddie but isn't redeemable like other's we've seen SH affect. As far as it shows, Mary was dead to him 3 yrs ago.
Me who played all the silent hill games
in shock and awe at the random DMC deepcuts in this video... also at Autumn's restraint in that entire conversation, as one absolutely obsessed DMC freak to another
How come og Dante was so depressed 😢?
Mist Town?........how about....Ghost Mutt
Just had an idea what if they combine the stories of one and 3 and make them fit together into a cohesive game and call it Silent Hills?
My 2 favorite muscle mommies in 1 video
Good list. SH3 is my fav and I always had a soft spot for Downpour.
Can't say I find any enjoyment out of any of the SH's after 2 besides the remake and Shattered Memories.
Hot take.... PT was garbage and all jump scares. I tried getting into SH3 because of the hype but I've always found Heather to be annoying and the enemy types laughable. Besides the guy with the claws similar to the blind dude in RE4. He was dope. All of 3's ending were lack luster at best. I can say the same thing about The Room.
Arcade was damn near a 2 star IF that
3 is the best one tbh
Agreed with Reuben's problem (I only knows the conspiracy theory phrase he is involved in and that's it) and avoid the current ones and replaced the voice actor to sound similar to Dante for Neflix's DMC (anime series). Disagree on Dante's Romantic Decline status (included the sexual ones) with the opposite sex since he still CAN have rapport/accquitment/associate relationship with Lucia (DMC 2 Game Version) in a more professional in their quest. Until the reboot one (2013), which I'm not fan of younger Dante's F**boy phrase and manners just to learn to the specific audiences who was in their late teens to early twenty at the time and thank god in some area of the game he can still development and kinda make him tolerant at least. Since then, he has been chilled, resourceful, mature, and likeability with others in DMC 5 (2019). Not 100% convincing of V's comment on Lucia in the past game in DMC 5 to be the cause of Dante's relationship issues, he still keeps on processing in his maturity development in the game and some areas. Personally, I'm not convincing with the on and off "romance" status with Barrel (agreed with Autumn Lvy and Matt) and I'm looking at it in the line of associate/rapport relationship instead of potential romance/sexual catalogue since it's focused or just fan services (depend if they support it or not). That's why I like the friendship/associate relationship with him toward Lady, Trisha, Nero, and Morrison since they are more sincere and instrigued than a few other female or males characters in the past games and the manga version.
og silent hill and silent hill 2 were great games a true standout in their times
the stuff after was hit and miss w things and the remake is bad it kills the game it takes it from horror to some schlocky action shooter like re4
the original the gun was a trap asides for bosses where it was useful the remake is just dinocrisis 2 wearing a silent hill skin
James is a good guy and I’ll die on that hill
Right next to Mary on that hill.
@@flophouseplaysDAMNNNNN😂😂😂
@@flophouseplays He ended his wife’s suffering and felt guilty that his motives weren’t 100% pure. In the end Mary forgave him and wanted him to forgive himself.
@@damien1065and that's why the game isn't the gem everyone thinks it is. this wasn't like James had done time in prison and was actually held accountable for his actions in any sense whatsoever. if he had been in prison, got out, the was still tormenting himself over it, then Mary's forgiveness makes more sense.
but he didn't. it had been less than a month and you're telling me that Mary would have been totally chill with her husband killing her because they couldn't screw anymore? because that was the motive that y'all miss: it wasn't an altruistic reason and James himself even says as much. he felt sorry for himself because he wanted Mary how she used to be, not just emotionally but primarily physically. when he realized he'd never get her back, then rather than cut her out of his life (still a cruel move but at least it's not murder!), he took all his anger and frustration out on her by murdering her out of selfishness. she was going to die anyway and all he had to do was wait if he was that over it, but due to his selfish and possessive nature, he just murked her out of some sense of feeling justified about his own suffering rather than understanding his wife.
while I don't hate the Leave ending in its entirety, it does still feel unearned by James. the fact that it took himself being tortured via the monsters of SH to actually come to terms with The Bad Thing he did isn't the W people think it is.
The only reason I don't like sh3 as much as 2 is the enemy designs. I thought they were pretty weak, not memorable at all.. just imo
Hot Takes Silent Hill 3 is okay. It got gameplay right finally and look incredible. Silent Hill 2 OG is incredible, but Silent Hill 1 has to be my favorite. 1&2 both have a particular moment when you enter the 3rd act and piece together the supporting characters in the stories are something that wasn't captured until the BioShock series.
I would have thrown the mobile games and ascension in 0, the arcade, book of memories, and short message in 2, otherwise good list. Also thank god the Silent Hill 2 remake is actually good.
>silent hill 4 worst than western slop
Epic list
Second
"I don't wanna talk about 4" BASED
It's Harry Mason, and it must be at the top because it's the ONLY true depiction of what Silent Hill properly is. SH2 story SUCKS compared to 1.
THANK YOU 😭
