The Udmurt Republic is like a small separate country, with its culture, with its traditions, with its own language, which is located inside another country-Russia and is an integral part of Russian culture!
Polina Gagarina had a shit Swedish-written cliche ''Love Love Peace Peace'' kinda pop/rock song, an updated version of Dina Garipova entry. And in Baltic countries almost every Russian entry gets from 7-12 televoting points, whatever shit they send. Sure, Polina ha an amazing voice, but other than that the song is disposable and fast-food.
@@heppolo Well you know that Lithuanian juries were biased for ranking Russia last in 2015. Russia was not the worst of the night and this can be confirmed by the televote or the votes of the other juries.
Sorry, Jake, I disagree this time. I caught myself smiling all the time during their performance! It was soo cute and so brave that they came to sing this song in Udmurt language in Europe at their age. This performance is so about Russia really))
Marie Anne You have to remember that this is the first time I’m seeing this performance. It’s a lot to process. I’m learning more about them like how his helped them build things in their village, and I think that’s so cool.❤️
Ah, yes, the last time we had a national selection. 'Old women baking bread'. It means Grandmothers of Buranovo which is a village in Udmurtia, and the language of verses was Udmurt. They tried to win a national final a couple of years before that. And I remember in the 2012 national final a big favourite to go through was a duo of Dima Bilan (competed twice in Eurovision and won it) and Yulia Volkova (from t.A.T.u, competed in 2003). But babushki won with a margin.
the selection felt so fixed ever since there was Drobysh involvement in this whole Babushki thing (he turned them from a credible folk group into a completely novelty act)
"2012 national final a big favourite to go through was a duo of Dima Bilan (competed twice in Eurovision and won it) and Yulia Volkova (from t.A.T.u, competed in 2003). But babushki won with a margin." Russia always making bad choices at Eurovision.
Also known as the Russian Grandmothers - the reason they did so well is because they were so far out there compared to normal Eurovision acts. They certainly stood out, as even non-Eurovision fans often mention the year the grannies competed
Don't hate on the grannies, Jake >:c This was Euphoria's greatest rival and not surprising at all. They went to Eurovision hoping to win to raise money for reparations in their village, which they managed to do I believe even though they didn't win. This was still better live than this year's disaster Yuliya. The song was pretty catchy and to this day the tiny granny is the owner of my heart, she was adorable! They all did their very best and yes, I DO think they should compete in Eurovision, I hope so much Russia brings them back one day. With the new voting system they might just actually win, considering they did amazingly well with the jury, they shouldn't have a problem with the public.
Mysterious Stranger Remember it was my first time seeing the performance. I don’t have all of the background information like you guys do. I love their story!❤️
Finally! It was probably the cutest ESC ever!😘💖💖 I searched for some background information, why they'd come up with the idea to compete, and it's also a heartbreaking story - the "Babushki" wanted a church to be built in their native village, with money they got for Eurovision and further performances! Thank you, you just made my day!☉
ahahaha! Jake, I just looooove your reaction and your face when you saw that performance :) It's morning in Ukraine now and you just MADE my day! can't stop laughing :) Thank you so much for that!
they were just toooo adorable! they were one of the most well deserved second places of all time.. sometimes it's not just about "technical" good music. Music is about emotion.. and men these ladies made my hearth melt :D
I was kinda sad they beat out the Balkan Ballad King Zeljko Joksimovic. You can’t be mad at cute grannies I guess. But yeah lol it was a novelty factor. I guess Russia after being beat by Lordi few years earlier decided to try that approach too. Those grannies were quite famous in Russia around that time. They were performing covers of Russian and international rock songs. In Udmurtian language. It was quite cool actually.
Yes, Russia did a national selection in 2012 and the grannies won it in a landslide public support, even beating favorite Dima Bilan, winner of Eurovision 2008!
Still love them ❤️ I heard that some of them past away which is so sad but you can‘t stop time :( The story behind it and the cuteness factor where amazing. This entry was something new and something brave. ❤️
Well, they came 2nd with tele vote with a narrow margin with Loreen being so hardly over voted... At least with jury they were 11th but in total (because of being hardly over voted) they still came second. But whatever it’s a joke entry so just dance! P.S. Бурановские бабушки (Buranovskiye babushki) means “grandmothers from Buranovo”. And actually 2012 was the last year so far Russia had national selection.
Your chock seeing the grandmas the first time... prizeless! :-D What can I say? We Europeans votes with our hearts and we love grandmas baking cookies! The quality song and performance of Loreen won, so it's ok.
It was worth watching this again just to see your facial reaction, it was priceless. I am still drying my eyes from laughing so much! Many thanks I didn't think I would get a laugh today!!
Was waiting for this WTF moment. Babushki is plural of babushka. And yes, they are from Buranovo and sang in Udmurt a regional language, Some people thought this was an elaborate troll from Russia who didn;t want to win - but almost did. Thank god for Loreen!
I was laughing so hard at this reaction. I'm used to novelty acts so I loved them and I think it was a very fun song. But it's true that there were better songs ranked below it. My favorite from 2012, Iceland, was only 20th place :(
I think you have a long way to go in truly understandig Eurovision. 😂 Every time you ask yourself “How did this make it through the national/selection/semi/how did it win”? Just remember that Eurovision is not always about the ~quality. Sometimes countries like to send joke entires, and those often gain the sympathy of the audience. Back then, it made even more sense because the televoters decided the fate of the song (case in point). But also, remember Verka Serduchka (2007) or Cleo & Donatan (2014).
MaCherie92 Don't forget Germany 2010 with Dita Von Teese or Slavko in 2017 with his fab hair. That's just the weird world of Eurovision and we love it 😂
This is the part of Eurovision that some don't understand, but it represents the fact that anyone can do well and there's not a secret formula to win or finish high in the final. Obviously this did well because people found them cute and unusual even if the song is terrible, but if you want to see more quality songs that year was pretty good, starting from one of the best balkan ballads ever in 3rd place, Estonia in 6th, Italy in 9th, Spain in 10th or Iceland in a very underrated 20th.
That was six years ago. Buranovskie grandmother or even grandmother is something that everyone has in heart. Those in the village ( grandfathers in the post-war period was a tough deficit) in the morning and the cow will milk yield, and the vegetables, and will bring eggs from the chicken coop. This is a wooden house made of timber, stove, iron bed, lace napkin on a black and white TV, pedestal-radio stand by the window. River, summer, childhood. Grandma's songs in the evenings. She is one - this childhood... In Europe, this also gives a response, so the second place.
Honestly i dont know what's more amazing and mindblowing trolling, the fact that Russia send this to ESC or the fact that Europe gave it 2nd place trolling even harder
This is another one of those where you kind of had to be there for the lead-up and pre-show build. This was (I think) the only time the Russian entry was selected by a national final with a public vote, and frankly the organizers tried to game it by putting up a duet by Dima Bilan and one of the former members of TATU (which was supposed to be the clear winner) - and the Russian public basically punched them in the nose and sent the grandmas instead. And then they kind of became that years "OMG this is so Eurovision" novelty act and got tuns of publicity and support for being the cute old grandmas competing in Eurovision. So, yeah, everyone thought is was extremely cute and there was an element of rebellion to the whole thing - was it musically the best entry...probably not...but that wasn't really the point. Also Loreen won that year in an absolute blowout - she came in the huge favorite and there was never any doubt that she would win with a massive score, by far most "this is over before it starts" Eurovision I've ever watched. So, in that scenario, it's not at all surprising that a novelty act came second to a winner who totally demolished the competition.
Awww Jake, you should watch more acts like this one to get the Eurovision spirit😊. And yes, these grannies are so cute and adorable, well deserved second place. Love from Russia😘
Good luck getting this song out of your head. There was a couple of times when we sent joke songs like this or like Lost and Forgotten, and I honestly think that they are better than boring ballads or bland pop songs we've been sending recently
This was only 11 points behind Sweden in the televote so people really loved it :) Btw, hope you will like the 3rd place finisher form 2012 /2nd place finisher 2004, Zejlko Joksimovic from Serbia ( represented Serbia & Montenegro in 2004). His balkan balads are legendary, especially "Lane Moje" form 2004
It's here! You've made my Sunday! 2012 is a REALLY good year for Eurovision. You should just react to the entire Grand Final, lol. I love the Buranovskie Babushki so much! The song is about them being really excited because their grandchildren are coming to visit and it's cause for a celebration. They had previously competed in Russia's National Selection in 2010, but came in 2nd or 3rd - I don't know how. 2010's song was SO weak. After 2012, Russia moved to an internal selection.
Love ya reactions dude! How to pronounce it correctly: bu'ranovskie 'babushki. And yeah, we had a national selection where they won. Ahahhaah 'I love grandmothers' 😂😂😂
Grannies from Buranovo - the correct translations. And no, we have no national selection, the federal TV channel chooses for us every single year :( However, Бурановские бабушки had shocked the audience, and their second place is a prize for the unusual performance which people liked. It was just funny and extraordinary - and eurovision likes that.
welcome to the weird wild world of Eurovision. It truly would not be Eurovision without these far out, silly, acts. Also sometimes countries truly take the piss and send acts that are ridiculous because they don't want to spend the money to host if they win the contest or they never place in the final so they send something crazy just for fun. See Ireland "Dustin the turkey" which never made it out of the semi finals. part of that particular entry though was just the Irish humor that voted as a country to send that act lol. I find it so funny when the whole of Europe falls in love and gets behind a silly act and places it really high in the voting. It is just plain fun. Eurovision would just be boring if you took it so seriously and it would lose a lot of its charm. People love the fun acts, they become iconic and very loved. Some of the fun acts actually become real growers and bangers. I have so much fun seeing people suggest their favorite acts to you. It just shows how much they love both the "legit" music and the "novelty" acts.
They went to the Euro only to raise money for the Church building in their village. They built it. And by the way, it wasn't their first attempt, they were at the national selection in 2011, but the song was less successful
They won the adorable and sweet factor, that's ehy they got in second place. And yes, if it's good a nobility act can get in the second place, but can't even qualify like the Ireland's puppet, or get very few points like the chiki chiki from spain😅😅
You are right. They are from the village of Buranovo in the Republic of Udmurtia. They are singing in the local Udmurt language. One of the baboushkas sadly died in 2019. The band is much bigger, like 10 members. But as Eurovision allows maximum of 6 performers on stage, some of the baboushkas had to stay home.
This year the official Eurovision Song Contest channel posted a video of the Estonia contestant reacting to prior opera songs from Eurovision. They showed her Cezar's song -- which is incredibly weird -- Cezar, BTW, hosted Romania's Selectia Nationale this year and another recent year -- and, well, you'll get it, she had a great reaction to this song.
Well - this song was not a masterpiece - but I really liked it! It was so autentic, SO Russian - and it made me smile! They were cute, sweet and adorable :)
Hi Jake. Welcome to the Eurovision family. I think that Eurovision 2014 was the best we have seen with so many highlights. One of those highlights was Emmelie De Forrest performing a shortened version of "Teardrops" and her new single "Rainmaker", which had all the participants coming onto the stage and singing like a big happy family. One of the best momments in Eurovision history. Please react to that. You wont be dissappointed.
POV: An American watches Eurovision acts.. These are the acts we as Eurovision fans live for, this is what makes Eurovision the contest we love. They should've won to be honest..
Can't wait until you react to Greece 2013 tbh Also, here is a short list of what has performed in the contest, so you know what to expect: - grandmas baking cookies - pirates - an opera vampire - a blond polish woman with her entire bosom out, casually churning butter - CELINE FUCKING DION (wearing a leather jacket and a tutu) - literal monsters - flight attendants - the puppet of a bird - a bride - three grooms (accompanied by 3 brides) - a band singing about the importance of mustaches - facebook - irish twins dressed in full metallic (happened twice, actually) - possibly the worst choreography in the entire history of music performances (greece 2002) - a gypsy superman - johnny depp and helena bohnam carter on crack (bosnia/herzegovina 2008) - astronauts (MULTIPLE TIMES) - a bunch of guys in crisp white shirts, black ties, and silver underwear - SILVIA NIGHT (Iceland 2006) -- there is no way i can explain this accurately - the essence of being a balkan in a nutshell (Croatia 2006)
That's another reaction I didn't know I needed😂😂 Btw I suggest you to react to Italy 2015: Il volo - Grande amore. It ended up 3rd place and for me it's a masterpiece.
Wow... Now that was someone who takes everything way too seriously. It was fun entries like this that made Eurovision much more exciting back in the day. Ny favorite song of that year got 3rd place and I wasn't upset at all that these Grannies were above it because they are wonderful. They have a fun and catchy song. Not everyrhing has to be extra serious, an entry like this here and there to spice the things up just has to exist. And it's not even all about the backstory, I only learned of it recently myself.
Hi from Spain, Jake! I have to say I'm glad to have subscribed to your channel. You seem such a nice guy!!! I'd like you to react to the Spanish entry that year, please. In my opinion, way much better than this, but you know, grandmas and Russians, taking into account all the votes they drag from many countries they've been related to. So...
I watched this performance from concert hall , you need to be there to understand how much they were loved. They were very adorable and the song makes you smile. It was fun to watch them. Brunovski Babushki were great
When you're done with the 2nd places, can you react to Denmark's win in 2000? It's really a cute song and I think it's one of the best win. You couldn't start a decade/century with a cuter song. Concerning Russia 2012, personally it was always going to be Loreen, so most other contestant were cool but not the same level. Musically it's not the best, it's pure entertainment value there. People don't always vote for the best in terms of music but mostly for the people that stayed with them the most, and sometimes it's the joke entries that's how you end up with this 2nd. This is one of the few variant that makes the show not really predictable.
Congratulations! This is the first time you saw one of the weird entries. You'll see more of where that came from if you go back and watch more of the 2000s songs. 😂
you are adorable...your “i love grandmas” comment made me laugh out loud. and i like your double layer t-shirt look 😘.

Welcome to eurovison Jake 😂
Awww Jake, you should watch more acts like this one to get the Eurovision spirit😊. And yes, these grannies are so cute and adorable, well deserved second place. Love from Russia😘
Good luck getting this song out of your head. There was a couple of times when we sent joke songs like this or like Lost and Forgotten, and I honestly think that they are better than boring ballads or bland pop songs we've been sending recently
This was only 11 points behind Sweden in the televote so people really loved it :)
Btw, hope you will like the 3rd place finisher form 2012 /2nd place finisher 2004, Zejlko Joksimovic from Serbia ( represented Serbia & Montenegro in 2004). His balkan balads are legendary, especially "Lane Moje" form 2004
Omg, I forgot about them, they were so cute. Especially the smallest babushka, I'd love her staying in my own house.
I love Granny's hahaha.. that's why I love this so much hahah you can't help but love it!
This is exactly the face reaction to Babushki I anticipated :-D Cheers!!
And no, we have no national selection, the federal TV channel chooses for us every single year :(
However, Бурановские бабушки had shocked the audience, and their second place is a prize for the unusual performance which people liked. It was just funny and extraordinary - and eurovision likes that.
You should react to Russia Eurovision 2000. They got 2nd place and the song is amazing!
AND to the danish winner of 2000, Olsen brothers! 😊
They were just cute. :D I rooted for them back then. We had so much fun watching this at our esc-party. :D
Snooze Button I would have too. I think the idea of a Eurovision viewing party sounds like so much fun!
Yeah, we just gather around the TV with some snacks and it's always fun to watch the entries and making our predictions.
welcome to the weird wild world of Eurovision.
They were so cute!! 😍😍😍 We miss them so much Y__Y
I remember when i saw this in tv, and i loved them immediately. They are so adorable ❤️
This was your best reaction yet
наши Бурановские бабушки, потрясающие) смотрела тогда их выступление и так это трогательно было, не понять вам русскую душу как не пытайтесь
They went to the Euro only to raise money for the Church building in their village. They built it. And by the way, it wasn't their first attempt, they were at the national selection in 2011, but the song was less successful
The song is trash (except the intro), but those grandmothers are so adorable!
These entries are what I live for. I dont care for anything else in Eurovision
I think it so simple as that they make us happy.
Bookwright They did make me smile.😀
They won the adorable and sweet factor, that's ehy they got in second place. And yes, if it's good a nobility act can get in the second place, but can't even qualify like the Ireland's puppet, or get very few points like the chiki chiki from spain😅😅
Their only prop is an oven but the oven SPINS!!! 😂😂 Your reaction is priceless.
O! Your reaction is priceless! And I agree with you completely!
A very famous Russia second position is Dima Bilan in his memorable "Never Let You Go" in 2006. He went on to win in "Believe" in 2008.
Please react to
Jedward - Lipstick (Ireland 2011)
Cezar - It's My Life (Romania 2013)
Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivat - Aina Mun Pitää (Finland 2015)
This year the official Eurovision Song Contest channel posted a video of the Estonia contestant reacting to prior opera songs from Eurovision. They showed her Cezar's song -- which is incredibly weird -- Cezar, BTW, hosted Romania's Selectia Nationale this year and another recent year -- and, well, you'll get it, she had a great reaction to this song.
Просто мы либо делаем всё ну ОЧЕНЬ серьезно, либо тролим))) Но наш тролинг не все и не всегда понимают, к сожалению)
Please react to Estonia 2015 - Grand Final Performance
(Elina Born & Stig Rästa - Goodbye To Yesterday)
Jana Meleny This is still one of my favourites... 💞
I liked that one too
Jana Meleny YESYESYES
I remember that! That was on my Top 10 of 2012. Euphoria was my #1 (As was for most people) while Macedonia's Crno I Belo was my 2nd fav.
Love watching your reactions and keep up the good work!
BTW please react to Estonia 2015!
POV: An American watches Eurovision acts.. These are the acts we as Eurovision fans live for, this is what makes Eurovision the contest we love. They should've won to be honest..
Can't wait until you react to Greece 2013 tbh
Also, here is a short list of what has performed in the contest, so you know what to expect:
- grandmas baking cookies
- pirates
- an opera vampire
- a blond polish woman with her entire bosom out, casually churning butter
- CELINE FUCKING DION (wearing a leather jacket and a tutu)
- literal monsters
- flight attendants
- the puppet of a bird
- a bride
- three grooms (accompanied by 3 brides)
- a band singing about the importance of mustaches
- facebook
- irish twins dressed in full metallic (happened twice, actually)
- possibly the worst choreography in the entire history of music performances (greece 2002)
- a gypsy superman
- johnny depp and helena bohnam carter on crack (bosnia/herzegovina 2008)
- astronauts (MULTIPLE TIMES)
- a bunch of guys in crisp white shirts, black ties, and silver underwear
- SILVIA NIGHT (Iceland 2006) -- there is no way i can explain this accurately
- the essence of being a balkan in a nutshell (Croatia 2006)
It won the national selection just the same way they came 2nd in Eurovision and they were just 11 points behind Sweden in televoting.
Such wonderful old ladies! Loved this party pingles of yesteryear 😍
It was a party for everybody
relax, it's fun
I really love this and I have it on my phone.
#Luke thanks. So cute of you. Weird, but cute
That's another reaction I didn't know I needed😂😂
Btw I suggest you to react to Italy 2015: Il volo - Grande amore.
So...
I so laughed when I saw your reaction. Thank you.
Наши бабушки 🤗👍👍👍👍👍
This was the most charming entry ever.
I watched this performance from concert hall , you need to be there to understand how much they were loved. They were very adorable and the song makes you smile. It was fun to watch them. Brunovski Babushki were great
and the song is captivating, makes u watch it till the end, and so energetic and positive. i am an udmurt. and i am proud
Yes. They are amazing. "Babushka" is means "grandmother" in English..... I hope your grandmothers looks like our grandmothers :) :) :)
I laughed so hard when you bugged at the end of the song. XD
Congratulations! This is the first time you saw one of the weird entries. You'll see more of where that came from if you go back and watch more of the 2000s songs. 😂
