    Thank you for posting. I am a banana newbie and these videos have been very helpful. I have a Dwarf Cavendish that has a rack with roughly 120 bananas. During the storm it bent and the tree snapped off at about 80% of the trunk. Roughly 20% of the trunk is undamaged and still attached. I went ahead and propped the tree back up and secured it. Do you think the rack is salvageable and can stay on the tree to mature or I should just cut my losses and get rid of the banana to give more energy to its pups. Thank you

    I've got a banana rack for the first time here in SC! So excited. One thing that might be happening if you remove the flower bud too soon is that the stalk bleeds out and the rack is lost due to the moisture loss. I know when I trim my banana leaves, the water just pours out of the stem left on the tree. Just a guess. I'm going to leave mine as is and not remove it. great video! Thanks!

    People worry too much about Salmonella. The ones who get sick from it are the ones who are never exposed to it and then get exposed and have no imunity. I have had chickens for years and never been sick from Salmonella even once. I handle them all the time, touch their feet that walk through poop all day, I never wash their eggs, even before using them, and sometimes forget to wash my hands before eating after handling the Chickens. Constant small dose exposure to Salmonella builds your immunity to it. Eat healthy and build a strong immune system. The biggest thing to worry about with Chickens and the reason why I try remember to wash my hands after handling them is picking up worms/parasites, not Salmonella.

    One thing you might note about fowl waste is that cities require a lime application every 48 hours in the coop & run or it's a health violation. I'm not in the city but my acidic soil would love the lime. This year was an amazing year for my Blue-Java, the leaves are huge but I only had 18 leaves this year so no flowers. Ya I want my floodplain admin fined by FEMA for violating NFIP for not having arrows on the OSSF site plans to direct surface water. Properties with an OSSF on less than 2% slope are required to have comprehensive-drainage-plans but in my county they're all ponds.

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener 6 днів тому

      Hey Slacker. I use barn lime every time I clean out my coop, (Tractor Supply) and also between cleanings. keeps the smell and fly's away. good luck with your Blue Java. all mine bud in five months, and harvest within a year. use manure in your beds and that will help them grow and produce faster as shown in all my prepping the beds and planting videos

      @@TheFrugalHugelGardener I see I need to see more of your videos. I usually use worm castings, fish emulsion, kelp, and another seaweed extract on my bananas. While I also use some regular NPK synthetics like triple 17 as well. I don’t think Synthetics are bad as long as you add some organic matter with it. Also use bloodmeal, bonemeal, fishmeal, dried kelp and alfalfa on them. Probably overkill but it’s fun either way

    My first attempt to grow bananas was met with great success. I have two lovely racks of lady finger bananas almost ready to go. I did however remove the flowers early and made sure there were a nice sets of hands before I removed it. I'll try leaving the flowers on next year but all and all, a great result. I noticed fruit bats were attracted to the sent of the flower. This was another reason I removed them. Since then no flying foxes. Happy days.

    Hello Sam. I live in Nebraska and have tried to root 15-20 pups from my musa basjoo in pots and haven’t gotten any to live. I’ve tried different combinations of soil, putting them in shade and sunlight, in the house and out, removing the leaves, trimming the roots back, letting them dry for a day before planting and I can’t get even 1 to live. I’ve tried everything that has been suggested on many videos. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Are you sure that tall one is a Goldfinger? Looks like a Dwarf Namwah to me due to the all green trunk and lack of Black spots and red on the trunk, as well as how thick the trunk is. The goldfingers I have and others I've seen have a lot of Red and Black on the trunk.

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener 12 днів тому

      Hi Yes, I have the FHIA-01 Goldfinger Banana it's a hybrid dessert banana that was developed and released by FHIA in 1988. These plants are cold and wind-tolerant and produce high-quality fruits and are widely distributed for subsistence and commercial cultivation. The female parent was a Dwarf Brazilian/Dwarf Apple and still carries that nice apple flavor, making it an excellent dessert banana and is mostly eaten raw when ripe. The ripe fruit has a sweet-acid, apple flavor that is similar to the mother plant. The cut fruit does not turn black upon exposure to the air so it is good to use in salads. It is also excellent to cook with while green such as sliced and fried.
