Try knitting colorwork socks inside out. So, the floats are carried on the outside of the sock, which helps keeping them nice and loose. I got the tipp from an expert colorwork designer, and it really helped me.
I find the 9 inch circulars easiest for me when doing colour work too. Love the ghost socks 😊. I have also knit colour work inside out, which did help. The only time I thought of using magic loop, I watched a few videos and they suggest catching the yarn that is going to be carried round onto the lasts stitch before changing needles.
Thanks for an enjoyable podcast. Regarding colour work socks, I use 3 sizes of needle: 2.25mm for the foot, 2.5mm for the heel flap and gusset, and 2.75mm for the leg. I have found that this work the best for my feet. Someone else has suggested knitting inside out, which may be all you need to do. My first favourite pattern from your bundle is the Autumn Doodle Cowl, and the second is Foxtales.
My favorite color work pullover is The Porty by Gudrun Johnston. I’ve made half a dozen of them and just finished one for a gift. It’s so fun to play with colors on that one. I would really like to knit the Caitlin Hunter pattern. I did her Alpine Bloom and just loved knitting it and would like to try the Autumn one. Yours in the two colors is stunning and I have some Ulysses just waiting for a pattern. Your Home cardigan looks very cozy as well. I need to take apart a Felix Cardigan that is too big now and maybe that one would be nice since I just finished a Felix Pullover. Thanks for sharing.
I knit the colorwork portion of socks with 9 inch circulars. Small circumference needles took a little getting used to because I have large hands. I use ChiaoGoo Twist needles which come with 2 & 3 inch needle tips, so I use a 3 inch tip on my right hand needle and a 2 inch tip for my left hand. I’m a continental knitter, but I throw with my right hand when doing 2 handed colorwork.
You can try catching your float at the end of the first needle when doing magic loop so the color doesn't get stretched from the last time it was used on the first needle until the first time it is used on the second needle. You can also knit with the sock turned inside out. You're still knitting the right side, but the right side is inside the loop.
Hello! Yay, a fellow Canadian knitter who loves similar knitting designs !! Beautiful knitting projects. I just found you, and subscribed! I am a big fan of colorwork, and knit many, especially Norwegian sweaters & cardigans. I absolutely love the Alpineglow by Andrea Mowry and would LOVE to knit this one, too!!! Thanks for your video, and can't wait for your next one!!
Hello fellow Canadian! Thanks so much for watching and subscribing 🤗💕 I'm so happy you're enjoying the podcast! And yes, isn't the Alpineglow beautiful 😍
I have made 3 of Marie wallin sweaters with very affordable Holstgarn "supersoft". There are LOTS of colors in that collection. Make sure, if you use holstgarn, to make a swatch and block the swatch before you start your sweater. Blocking makes a huge difference.
Hi Kristy, thank you for the inspirational video and the opportunity to get a pattern from you. All the colour work accessories and garments you talked about are lovely. However I have fallen in love with a recently released pattern, that is the Seoul blouse by Aegyoknit. I hope this is an inspiration for you 😊. Love your podcasts 😍.
Hello. My tips for color work socks are: dpns and catch the floats (every 4 th of 5th stitch, at least for me it's a big help). Next one I haven't tried, but turn the sock inside out and knit from 'inside'. Now the floats are outside and they have to travel little bit longer way and it might help for the tightness.
I am just now on my 2nd colorwork project and have 2 more in my queue...the Autumn Alpine and the Agrifoglio. After this episode, I am sure another 1 or 2 will added. Thanks for the inspiration❤
I‘m knitting the magic toadstool socks from stone knits right now and my colourwork was too tight as well and I had to start over. I use small circulars and used one with a longer cable for the second try, so I could strech out the stiches more. The First sock is finished and fits perfectly. I also knit the biggest size, even though I normally cast on 64 Stiches for my socks. I really liked the patterns you selected, but I would really Like to knit a Strange Brew from tincan knits. I think it‘s nice that it gives you many different options to choose from and create your own colourwork!
A tip for knitting colourwork that I always use (along with sizing up needles) is to flip the work inside your needles. ( so that the wrong side of your work is outside. This gives your floats a tiny bit more length. You may also find that catching them every stitch gives you a looser/stretchier fabric. I sounds counter intuitive but it works for me! As for me, I love the Doodle patterns! x
When it comes to small circumference knitting, I would recommend using double pointed needles and catching your floats every 5 stitches or so. Also, you may want to size up 1 or 2 sizes. Hope that helps.
Hi Kristy, I really enjoyed your colour work pattern round up. I've definitely added some more pattern's to my future knits list! i think my favourite is the Fern and Feather, but i think the one I'd like to make the most is the Autumn Alpine that you're making. The version you are making is beautiful. I absolutely love the colours you have chosen xx
Enjoyed your podcast I too am working on stone knits socks. I am making batty for Halloween and finished her herding cats. I found it helpful to use 9” circs for socks and I also use knitting ring. I also spread stitches out on my needles as I knit them to allow for long stretches of the same colour if that makes sense. Hope this helps
This was a beautiful collection. My favorite has to be the Grærup Pullover. I love the muted tones and the colorwork only in the round and no sleeves. I loved the sweater with the fox motif, but I'm definitely not ready for that one!❤🧶
Those are some beautiful patterns. I love knitting colourwork, especially sweaters. At the top of my list right now is "Fernwood Sweater" by Tania Barley.
I am enjoy your channel quite a bit...I would love to try the fern and feather for my first colorwork sweater😊 Keep going with the socks..maybe just try the colorwork for the cuff like summer lee patterns..❤
For colorwork socks I usually use small circulars. Chiagoo has great ones. Otherwise I carry my floats on the end of each side to prevent it from pulling on the sides. I also make sure to use the same type of yarn for my contrasts. I think berroco vintage sock has some acrylic in it... this might be fine if all of the yarn was the same. When I mix wool with Superwash or acrylic sometimes it comes out uneven. All the best to your sock knitting!!! I think the ghost socks look really cute.
Thanks so much for watching! I will check out the small circulars. And I think you're right about catching the floats on each side. I think that will make a huge difference 🤗💕
Great episode! I knit the Stone Knits Bee color work sock with the Berrocco vintage and had similar issues. I also used magic loop. I think that I will try on the 9” circular needles. I have the yarn for the Alpine Bloom and would love the pattern. Your choice of Turquoise/light blue is fantastic!
Hello Kristy, Greetings from sunny and warm Laval, Qc. Just watching you for the second time as I'm knitting on Caitlin Hunter's Zweig with some lovely Urso and Émilie et Philomène yarns. You are absolutely correct in saying that fall is colorwork season! I'm going to comment right now before I've watched your whole podcast because maybe I'll have forgotten what I wanted to say when I get to the end. Yes, I'm at that age when things sort of disapear between the now and the then. Thank you hormones! I've started knitting my socks on fixed 9-inch circulars ever since I had the following revelation. I had knit one sock on a 9-inch circular and when I got to the next, the needle was already "busy" with another project. No problem, I thought and just reverted to magic loop. Well.....let me tell you that the results spoke quite loudly for themselves. My Magic loop sock was more than a size smaller than my 9-inch one. Because you don't need to push-pull your needles and carry over the yarn between each halves, your tension is a lot more regular and in my case...looser. Also, if this isn't enough, you can always knit you sock inside out. Let me explain. You're still making your colorwork in knit stitches, but by turning your sock inside out, the yarn you're carrying is on the outside of your project instead of on the inside, therefore it takes that much more of it for every stitch to make, preventing thus the over tightening of your strands. I'm sure that there are oodles and oodles of UA-cam vidéos which explain this a lot better than I just did. OK, back to you and my knitting! By the way.....your Home cardigan is gorgeous and as it is on my "To do" list, I'm taking notes!
My favorites are the two you knitted “The Home Cardigan” and the “The Autumn Alpine”. These two knits I found very inspiring and have added them to my “favorites” with some of your edit notes. Happy Knitting, Kathy from Massachusetts.
Hello there. I adore colourwork patterns and would love to knit the Andrea Mowry pattern in those exact colours!! The Soldotna Top is also on my wishlist.
So many lovely patterns but my favourite pattern at this time would be the doodle cowl. Fun fall knitting, for sure. Thank you for taking the time to compile all these patterns.
Lovely Video! I have been wanting to knit Orkney forever and have the pattern but have not yet decided to move forward with it. I also have been wanting to try moasic knitting and have never made a shawl so, LUNAE is my top favorite of the patterns you discussed today.
I would definitely cast on the foxtail sweater if I had to pick just one out the fabulous line up you presented. Thank you for the time and effort you put into this video.
Thanks for sharing your fall inspiration. There is something about Fall and colorwork knitting that just goes hand in hand. I have also been eyeing the Avena sweater by Jennifer Steingass. Happy knitting!
Hi from Montreal! I freaking love that lunae shawl, I’ve wanted to knit it for ages but always end up making a sweater instead… maybe this will be my catalyst. Also, I had a great idea of a low contrast alpine bloom sweater while watching this video, I nearly cast it on immediately.
Knitting colorwork socks inside out helps a lot, also catching your float in the stitch before moving on to the next needle. That gap does make you feel as if you have to pull it all in tight, but you don't. The colorwork sweater that inspires me is Moinear by Ailbiona McLochlainn. My favorite from your bundle is the Autumn Doodle cowl. Looks like fun!
Hello! My favorite pattern from your list would have to be the Alpenglow 1. It's intriguing to look at with fun colors while also not being too "fun" depending on colors picked for the main body. I think it looks seasonal and elegant which seems counterintuitive for fall, but here we go.
You have inspired me to look into colorwork! All of the patterns in your roundup are beautiful. Another pattern to check out is the Finial and Fern Cardigan by Gretchen Mac; I love the longer version of this pattern.
Thanks so much for watching! I'm so glad you enjoyed the episode 😊 I made the coat from some plaid jacketing I bought from Fabricville. Here is the link to it: fabricville.com/products/plaid-jacketing-lumberjack-028-grey?_pos=24&_sid=447051187&_ss=r
While I certainly love colourwork sweaters, that first shawl (lanai?) really caught my eye. Maybe it’s the colours in the sample. Or the (graerup) vest. Gorgeous!! Your works are something else as well! I cannot sew anymore, and after seeing your jacket, I’d like to change that.
Great podcast episode! I wouldn't go 9 stitches, especially when you go from needle 1 to needle 2 in magic loop because you're bound to travel that yarn to tight. Try going only 5 stitches at the most. I love the Graerup Slipover, I agree that the grays are stunning.
Hello. Thank you for pulling together such an interesting bundle of patterns. I have knit the fern and feather and have my eye on the coffeehouse cardi so that's what I would knit if I was the lucky pattern winner.
As someone else said…9 inch circulars are great for color work socks. And I catch my floats 5 to 6 stitches. No more than 6 stitches. Also if you spread out the stitches every 5 stitches that has helped me a ton. Don’t give up. My first pair of color work socks I can’t get over my foot. 😂
Love love love your home cardigan!!! I’m definitely adding that to my favorites. It looks great on you too. I ReALLY like the Thistle cardi too but I’m scared of steeking!!! Have you steeked? Thanks for another great episode 😊
Great episode! It’s always nice to see a pattern roundup that introduces patterns that weren’t on my radar. Some day I hope to knit either the chestnut or Rosealee cardigan by Marie Wallin. Perhaps one will be my New Year’s celebration cast on.
I would suggest Knit Picks Palette yarn for the Marie Wallen vest! I made my Yell Cardigan in that yarn and found it both very accessible and they have a ton of colours!
On your colorwork socks knit them inside out. That way the floats are going around the outside. I also use Jacard floats because they have stretch and put them every 4 or 5 stitches.
Hi! Maybe I have a tip for making colorwork socks. I just pull the cord 3-5 stitches from the edge while working with magic loop, so I don't generally start from the very edge, which helps me even out the tension all the way around.
Nice podcast, thanks. Your colors for Autumn Alpine pullover are stunning, elegant and VERY inspiring. I would also like to knit the Autumn Alpine by Caitlin Hunter. Thank you for the pattern win option. 👍🧶🇨🇦
I find using two circular needles is easier than working magic loop. Crazy Sock Lady has a video tutorial for knitting on two circulars. I struggle some with an all colorwork sock. I am average with regular knitting but find I’m loose with colorwork - the opposite of most others. It helps to turn your sock inside out so your strands are on the outside of the sock instead of on the inside of the sock and seems to keep the work all more even. I found a video for this online. It’s getting much more popular. Your sock looked great though. A great podcast, thank you.
Hello - I've struggled with color work socks a while. I finally found my 'recipe'. I start with my 'normal' size and a size 1 needle. Then I increase to the next size before colorwork chart, then use a size 3 needle (up 2 sizes) for the colorwork. I now just do the colorwork before the heel. Then I decrease to my regular size amount of stitches and a size 1 needle and do the heel and finish the foot. Not sure this is your recipe. I'm a fairly tight knitter and this has worked for my last 3 pair of color work socks. I use magic loop for all my sock knitting. I don't like the smaller circular needles - hurts my hands. The ghost socks are adorable!
Thanks so much for the tips...I don't think I will give up on Colorwork socks just yet, there are so many cute patterns. I have also used smaller needles and they hurt my hands too!
While I love Marie Wallin patterns, my favorite colorwork pattern out of those you presented is the Lunae Shawl. That's been in my queue for ages, but I just can't seem to commit to a color combination!😄 (P.S. Malabrigo is pronounced with a hard "g", like "go" in English.) Saluditos from Spain
Really liking that Lunae shawl, put it in my favourites file. Marie Wallin's patterns at this point are just too much for my colourwork skills. One can always dream though right?
I catch my floats every 3rd stitch. I find it prevents stitches becoming too loose or too tight. Also, in small circumference knitting you should knit the sock inside out so the floats are not accidentally too tight. I never change my needle size between solid colour knitting and colourwork on small circumference patterns. It won’t make a big enough difference. IMO😊
Personally, I don't like long floats. I catch the floats every 3 to 5 stitches. When knitting with magic loop or dpn, I also catch a float 2 to 3 stitches before the next needle. Knitting with the wrong side facing helps a lot too. Fun socks!
A thought about the colorwork socks. Is the yarn you’re using superwash? I usually knit with non-superwash for colorwork but made an exception recently and it greatly affected my confidence, evenness of stitches, and overall happiness with the project. Maybe a non-SW sock yarn like Mondim would make for a nicer experience!
Forgot to mention- when knitting socks, magic loop: I make sure I don’t pull the yarn too tight as you turn that new row- pulling the yarn from the back cord- I have that back stitch still on the needle- then when you pull that needle to the right, I kind of pinch it or hold it so it retains its size as it was on the needle, not pulled tightly on the cord. Alpenglow
Thank you so much for a wonderful and inspiring episode 🥰 So many beautiful fall colorwork patterns. The Lilleke light sweater by Aleks Byrd is one I would love to knit for fall. Regarding knitting colorwork socks. I recently got a tip about turning the sock inside out so that the floats are on the outside of your sock when you knit. It helped me a lot with the tensioning. Here is a tutorial if you are interested ; ua-cam.com/video/_Oihg2ddg7M/v-deo.htmlsi=7QAj1Uc1h64Z6jFK Wish you a wonderful fall 🧶🍂
I found a method for magic loop colorwork that eliminated the issues at the end of each needle. I readjust my cord before I continue to the next needle. This is short video showing as you approach the end of one needle you adjust the cord to go 1-2 stitches before the float. ua-cam.com/users/shortsdhdokwafFsk?si=36BsxRdjf_2XRq17
Smak circulars are the answer You arę looking for, dear 🫶 I love my chiaogoo shorties. My favourite pattern from the bundle is foxtales, which Indream to knit with nutiden, but still don’t have every colors 😅
Try knitting colorwork socks inside out. So, the floats are carried on the outside of the sock, which helps keeping them nice and loose. I got the tipp from an expert colorwork designer, and it really helped me.
I would love to knit 3 of the spooky hats for my grandkids. Thank you for showing this pattern!
Thanks so much for watching! I hope you enjoy the pattern. I'm sure your grandkids will love them! 👻
Knit your socks inside out. I just started this on my socks and it's a game changer.
Thanks so much for watching! Yes, I did the inside out on the second sock and it definitely was a game changer!

@@KnittingByTheBay Good luck if you try it. It was a lovely video 😊💕

I absolutely love fox tails! I made the hat and would love to knit the sweater.
Hello Kristy, my favourite pattern is Foxtales, by The petit knitter. I would love to knit it! ❤ Thank you so much for this beautiful video 💕🌈🌈

I have to say I really like your podcast. You pick very lovely patterns. This time my favorite is the Foxtales.
I’ve heard people mention they use 9” circulars for colour work socks. Hope that helps. Love your Alpine Bloom!❤
Thanks so much for the idea!! In the past the small needles have hurt my hands...but maybe I should give them another chance ☺️

Hello Kristy,
Greetings from sunny and warm Laval, Qc.
Great podcast episode! I wouldn't go 9 stitches, especially when you go from needle 1 to needle 2 in magic loop because you're bound to travel that yarn to tight. Try going only 5 stitches at the most. I love the Graerup Slipover, I agree that the grays are stunning.
Loved this! Thanks…❤ I’d choose the Alpenglow.
I was lucky to be picked to have knit Jennifer Steingass’s newest pattern, Thistlewood. Love her designs. She’s very local to me.
I'd love to make Thistle by Anna Johanna. I really liked your selection of colourwork projects.
Your choice of colorwork patterns are really gorgeous 🎉 ı d like to knit foxtale . I also love seoul blouse by Aegyoknit it is new
I would suggest Knit Picks Palette yarn for the Marie Wallen vest! I made my Yell Cardigan in that yarn and found it both very accessible and they have a ton of colours!
On your colorwork socks knit them inside out. That way the floats are going around the outside. I also use Jacard floats because they have stretch and put them every 4 or 5 stitches.
I tried knitting it inside out on the second sock and it worked great! Thanks for the tips 🤗💕
My favourite is the alpine sweater
How do you choose just one? I love the doodle cowl and the fox sweater...so cute!
I would love to knit the Autumn alpine by Caitlin Hunter.
Yes, definitely!
Fun socks!
Lots of inspiration today. I’m in B.C. Where are you?
Thanks so much for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the episode. I am in Ontario! 🇨🇦🍁
Hi! Yes the yarn is super wash. I will definitely try non super wash for my next pair of colorwork socks. Thanks so much for watching! 🤗💕
Alpenglow
the petitekniter pullover is bottom up, was hating that, while i made this pullower like 3 times and still cant get one to fit me :D
Turn your work inside out so the floats are on the outside circumference. Flip it back to do heels and toes.
I would love to win the
Autumn Alpine by Caitlin Hunter
Autumn alpine Katelyn hunter
Thank you so much for a wonderful and inspiring episode 🥰 So many beautiful fall colorwork patterns. The Lilleke light sweater by Aleks Byrd is one I would love to knit for fall.
Regarding knitting colorwork socks. I recently got a tip about turning the sock inside out so that the floats are on the outside of your sock when you knit. It helped me a lot with the tensioning. Here is a tutorial if you are interested ; ua-cam.com/video/_Oihg2ddg7M/v-deo.htmlsi=7QAj1Uc1h64Z6jFK
Wish you a wonderful fall 🧶🍂
I found a method for magic loop colorwork that eliminated the issues at the end of each needle. I readjust my cord before I continue to the next needle. This is short video showing as you approach the end of one needle you adjust the cord to go 1-2 stitches before the float.
