Great video, about to check out the racks and new website, I will be moving to a new place at end of the year and I will finally be producing my first rodents and can’t wait to start saving
Good informative video. It’s hard to find info. We just started breeding our own rodents because our collection is hitting 20+ and this was definitely helpful.
Great video and discussion! Honestly, after a few decades of doing both- some years buying rodents and some years producing my own...my opinion, it comes down to what you value, how much space and TIME you have available. If you want to ensure you always have high quality feeders to your snakes- definitely produce your own. If you have the space and free time, then definitely produce your own...But, if you're spending more time taking care of rodents and less with your collection, or it starts feeling like a "job" cleaning rodents instead of enjoying your hobby- then I wouldn't recommend producing your own. Everyone should try it though at some point and I agree FB rodent breeders are the standard and highly recommended.
This is one of the best videos I’ve watched on a long time. The amount of information in here is worth every second of time. I had been looking at the website at the rodent racks, and couldn’t figure out what racks to get for simple rat breeding for a collection of ball pythons. Great information and look forward to seeing part 2.
Love you guys and what you do for the hobby. I just started using CocoBlox and I'm a fan (better than the competition, I'll likely do a comparison vid eventually). I breed my own rodents for my small slither family (14, plus babies). I've kept rodents as pets for a long time so I breed them pet-style, in colonies in wire cages with enrichment. I understand that it's industry standard to breed rodents lab style in bulk with the most animals in as little space as humanely possible, keeping everything simple and easy to clean and manage. You've got that down to a science and I respect it, even though I am critical of this style of rodent breeding in general. What I would really like to see is something a step beyond that for the keepers like myself - larger caging that allow the rats to be rats, but is still easy to clean and manage. No rodent cage or system available today has what I'm looking for and I've been considering building my own. You said you consider custom work - if I drew up some rough plans and ran some ideas by you some day in the future, would you hear me out? You are industry leaders, and I see the industry heading toward more ethical keeping. Me and my boas are really looking forward to seeing the new arboreal style racks you're planning! I'm saving up. :)
Very good info in this video though and I genuinely wish I had the bigger rodent rack from freedom breeder, not the fb10 one lol,, alittle to small for my liking but obviously it’s perfect for what they were explaining,, looking forward to the next vid and here’s your chance Kusko,,, you can let G know how much when he says Platty in referencing the platinum gene kills me 😂 lol have a great day and keep it coming,,, not the Platty ,, the the content I was talking about lol
Just do a video of each rack you sell and the different setups it can have. Your racks obviously aren't cheap, so it would be nice to get a better look and perspective of each rack.
This might sound like a dumb question but why do you do a time limit on videos ....I could watch you for a hour lol all the knowledge wisdom passion and you are so brilliant not to mention fine as hell!!
For me I made the jump to breeding my own rats because the 2 hour round trip to the only pet store around that sold feeders and the high cost of their rats was adding up to the price of a car payment lol.
Lol breeding rats was one of the 1st things I thought when I got in to this hobby.I went with the 832-40 and put 2-3 female and rotate the males (3-4) in a cycle to keep the size I like to feed my snakes and euthanize and freeze off the rest before they get to big my freezer is starting to fill up though lol
I always bred my own feeders. Common sense, they literally pay for their own food, bedding and also fed my snake's. I also always separated my preggos for that same reason. As you work with your animals you always learn knew things. This is crazy... Funny I didn't have to watch this video to know this since I have learned from experience and adding expenses , no brainer. All it takes is a lot of time to keep up with maintenance. Great video tho. I gave a 👍.
The issue we have in Virginia Beach, is finding quality rodent food at an affordable price. Shipping, and freight kills all great price points. High price food is the #1 killer of rodent production here. No company will ship here with the exception of Mazuri. Right now the best we can get his Doggy Bag dog food from Tractor Supply at $0.35/pound. Everything else can be easily sourced and shipped affordably, feed, nope......
Oh cool I litterly just found Reach Out Reptiles this morning on my search for a super dwarf retic cow 🐄🐍🤍🖤 wow! Cool! Enjoy CA! I'm in NorCal too! Isn't it crazy how petstores like the big chain ones sell fancy "pet" rats for like 12$ each I was thinking about that when I started feeding my snakes I've seriously seen "Pet" rats sell for as high as 20$ each!
The higher price of pet rats is due to the extra time taken to ensure tameness and quality bloodlines that are not prone to illness, as well as color/pattern mutations that may be more desirable than others just like in snakes.
@@ReachOutReptiles I want one so bad! I only have ball-pythons so far and the regular sized retics aren't my cup of tea I've been researching here and there and I definitely want a super dwarf cow so awesome 😎! Dude also your friends snake room totally dope! I do exactly what he does with retics just to ball-pythons i litterly ordered a pet tent today as well LOL! Wish houses weren't so expensive here in CA id Love to have a big spot for me and my snake babies! Also p.s. congratulations on what you have accomplished breeding snakes I really look up to you and am just in awe of your work with these animals! Thank you for sharing your experiences 🙏 🐍
Great video. Another thing you didn't mention is how fun rodent breeding is. I throw a tub or two of dumbo's and sell them for even more to the pet stores. Love my rats and asf's
I added some dumbo breeder females a few months back and bred them to my hooded males. The dumbos litters seems to always be the biggest and healthiest compared to my other rats lol so now I’m holding back more dumbo females
It’s never that easy though to sell your rats though.. Especially when 90% of people don’t understand or realize that the prices for what is online(rodent pro and such)(not saying there not amazing bc they are a great company) is not the actual prices and the only reason they are even listed as $2 a rat or $1.75 per rat is bc your getting bags of 25 - 40 or more so bulk prices are cheaper for obvious reasons,,, BUT they put it at that price to try and account for shipping which is minimum of $25 a box and you can’t fit much into a box so normally $50 for the 2 box’s shipped so just in that makes the rats around $3-3.50 each not to mention the wait and the fact they can do that price really only bc there a hugeeee operation and can get there supplies in bulk bulk to get the bedding and food for cheaper then anyone else could,, so when a normal person( us ) tries to sell our overflow to try and help pay for the rays just on its own it’s VERY DIFFICULT bc nobody wants to pay what you put into it even if your asking only $4 a rat if there only buying a few and asking $3.50 a small if there buying a pack of 10 frozen smalls (even though that’s what you pay at reptile expos for them lol... some people are rediculouse) bc they look online and see $2 a rat and don’t put any of what I mentioned in account,, so finding customers that understand that and am willing to pay the $35 for a 10 pack of smalls, $40-$45 for 10 pack of mediums and so on and of course if you have people coming back to you all the time there’s alittle more room to wiggle around with to help the customer out but it’s hard enough for the average person to even find customers let alone willing to pay a hole $1 or $2 most depending on size sold/ needed from what the big time breeders online post when there selling big bags of bulk rodents without the shipping and such costs added to them., just being honest and letting people know the troubles I found I had when trying to find a handfull of customers that could help pay for my rat breeding operation for my 20 snakes
I've been building my own snake racks and they work for now until my snakes pay for my Freedom Breeder snake racks but when I start breeding rats I'm not gonna mess around, it'll definitely be Freedom breeder racks all the way, everything else is a waist of time and money.
Alright, so I have only 4 balls and my rodent breeding program began when somebody wouldn't eat and the girlfriend couldn't resist having a new cute fuzzy pet... big surprise right? Eventually had 2 breeding pairs and would have way more than enough free snake food all day long. And when you raise yourself and do it proper, internal parasites passed to the snake aren't a problem. Feeding a picky python a live, clean rat can be a plus. Also, not gonna lie, rats make cool pets too. They're fairly intelligent, even can be trained, had their own personalities even. I loved my rat parents almost as much as my serpents ha. Well, turned out same girlfriend is allergic to rodents, so we had to slowly phase out and get rid of them... Now, I pay $5-8 a piece for med frozen rats. That's up to $120 a month on something that I used to give away on Craigslist cause I had too many. If you have the time and space, breed your own freaking rats...
Why would you keep a mammal in an enclosure that it cant stand up in?How is that suitable for a rat? Freedom Breeder...That's some scumbag shit. This isn't a standard for anyone serious about animal husbandry. I ain't buying any of this.
In all my years watching ball python videos and researching this and never once have I heard about female ball pythons clutched getting smaller with age. Is that a bunch of bull shit or what?
This is one of the few channels where I'd watch a half hour video no problem. definitely keep going with this great info please.
Freedom breeders are the top notch keep up the great work you do for our industry jesse
We have produced rodents since day 1 of starting our business and we have been feeding our collection for FREE for years :)

Been breeding for a year now and just learned a lot from you thanks for explaining shit in a way I could understand...
Looking forward to the arboreal rack reveal!
Yeah buddy!

I feel like saying Platty instead of Platinum is still less lazy than saying G instead of Garrett 😝😎🤙
Looking forward to part two!! I was almost about to put an order in just off the back of this video!!

Awesome now i have to rethink my rodent situation
Really enjoyed this one guys I already breed my own but learnt a fair bit from this to tweak my own production
Cheers

If y'all could talk one at the time it would really help us foreigners trying to understand lol great video
We just got back from the 4th seen the video looking good Jessy thanks for the love!!!
Great info guys🤘🏻
some golden tips here. A++ thank you!
Once I get my shed I’m a buy a couple of those racks
Awesome video loads of information about breeding looking forward to the next weeks
looking forward to part 2
I'll go over there and work! Sign me up!!!
Awesome video, I definitely have to get one of them stainless rat racks🤘🏻
That was gangsta! Dope shit and quality! Keep it going brabra! 🤙🏽
I keep considering this cuz my suppliers are damn near dried up right now.
Never really thought of it like that.... it makes a whole lot of sense though
Good to know.
Do you have any official stockists in the UK where I can get a rodent rack?
I heard that you shouldn't have both rats and mice in the same room. The mice wont breed because they smell the big rats. Is this true? Thanks
But i only have like 7 ball pythons and a retic would it be worth breeding rats??
For me I made the jump to breeding my own rats because the 2 hour round trip to the only pet store around that sold feeders and the high cost of their rats was adding up to the price of a car payment lol.
This is awesome info thanks guys
For female heirloom tubs do you recommend FB10s or FB10-5s?

Try using a hog feed. That's what I use while supplementing with veggies

Whats this about copper tubing for rats !?!??? Come on jessy let me know!
