If you're looking for interesting topics please consider doing a video on NES/MASTERS/etc. games that sold fairly poorly but for whatever reason sold exceptionally well in a select area. I've always wondered if certain cultures gravitate towards certain thematic or gameplay elements. There's the obvious ones (Japan-pachinko-karaoke for instance) but a regional demographic snapshot by way of favoring certain seemingly vastly unpopular games sounds interesting! Not sure I've ever seen a video like that.
I am a Castlevania die-hard fan and bought a Dreamcast specifically for Castlevania Resurrection, only to have Konami cancel it. It was a massive dissapointment. I wanted that game so much, and I was excited to see Sonia from Castlevania Legends in the new game. To make matters worse, they later removed Sonia from Canon and rewrote the beginning of the Belmont clan in one of the two decent PS2 Castlevania. Unfortunately, the new canon beginning to the lore that they made on PS2 wasn't nearly as interesting as Sonia's story was. Konami later got the poor idea to completely reboot Castlevania on PS3 as a Devil May Cry inspired effort and, while it played alright, the story was shite and it was genuinely missing the heart and soul of what makes Castlevania an amazing series. Castlevania can easily be a 2D or 3D experience and be fantastic, so I'm not giving up hope that more titles of both varieties might still yet arrive. It will always remain such a pity that none of them will feature Sonia.
Castlevania (N64) has it's fans, including myself. It would be fun to see resurrection completed as a retro title bridging the N64 and PS2 gameplay styles.
Nice of you to bring Pam into this video. Overall a solid effort on the retelling of the history of Resurrection. Just a few bits I wanted to comment on: There was actual gameplay video released at the time of the game's development so the comment on just cinematics and art etc isn't 100% accurate. There's a specific clip of Sonia running around a dining room table that was released that showed off the game in motion which was from IGN. Also, to comment on C64 and the critics panning it, this is incorrect as most of the reviews from back in the day for the original C64 got pretty good reviews with scores in the 80s on major publications like IGN, GamePro, Gamespot etc. Fans were less kind to it though so that is accurate. The PS2 was the biggest nail in the coffin for the game as you mentioned. Shanoa was not the first female playable lead, that would go to technically Sypha in CV3, followed by Sonia in Legends, then Carrie Fernandez in C64/LoD, followed by Charlotte Aulin in Portrait of Ruin. So if you're saying the ONLY female lead playable outside of Sonia, then sure that stands up. Also, Victor showing up in Lords of Shadow 2 doesn't make him part of the primary timeline as LoS is not part of the original Castlevania timeline. The opinion of Legends being the worst of the three GB games is....an opinion. I realize that's your own opinion and you're welcome to it but Legends honestly is a much better entry than Adventure ever was. It isn't anywhere near as slow thanks to the whip power up that speeds Sonia up, it offers a unique take on sub weapons, too. But hey, that's just my opinion. Also regarding the plot of Legends affecting the canon...it could've worked just fine even with Lament of Innocence existing...baring in mind that we ignore CV3 being the first proclaimed time the Belmonts fight Dracula (Leon didn't fight Dracula, technically.) Plus, Alucard being in his 20s at the time of Sonia's Legends run puts him at the perfect time to have a baby with Sonia. The strength of Dracula's own son's DNA combined with the Belmonts perfectly makes sense as to why they would be considered the "chosen ones" beyond the initial two Belmonts (Leon and Sonia) as their powers grow with each new Belmont. This is mostly just a fan theory I've cooked up but I figured it might be worth mentioning as good for thought here. Thanks for an overall solid video.
The intro of Castlevania 3 didn't exactly specify in what year Trevor fought Dracula, although the official canon given by Iga was 1476. It was conjectured that if Legends fit within the timeline, it would take place around 1450, about 26 years before Trevor's fight - and well short of a full century! Then again, Castlevania has frequently broken the "Dracula rises once every century" rule several different times in several different ways. There is one other problematic thing with Legends taking place in 1450: Vlad Tepes, the one called Dracula, was born in 1431 which would have meant that he was only 19 years old when Sonia fought him! Is it possible that Alucard could have been born by then? Yes... but he would have been just a child... except that the recent Castlevania anime has Alucard mature into adulthood rather quickly... But of course, all of that also goes out the window when factoring in that another man by another name would gain vampiric powers in 1094 and start calling himself Vlad Tepes Dracula in the 1400's in the story of Lament of Innocence. Either way, 1476 was the year that the real life Vlad Tepes died, so it makes sense that would be the year that Konami would decide to have Trevor Belmont fight Dracula. But I am with you about Legends, Dongled, in that I rather enjoyed playing it, and it really annoyed me that Sonia was written out of the timeline by Iga and Konami.
@@bardinblue9830 I always consider the real life Vlad Tepes to be only inspirational to Castlevania's lore, with Bram Stoker's Dracula being used with a grain of salt for the Vania timeline. I can't remember what I specifically said in the Legends/Resurrection video I did a few years back but I remember laying out something that would make Sonia fit into the timeline perfectly. Mostly just ignoring the whole "CV3 was the first Belmont" thing. Also, I believe in this video it was mentioned that the game took place in the 1600's which I believe is incorrect as well. If I recall, Victor was from the 1800's and summoned Sonia to that timeline. It's been a few years since I did research for it so I'd have to go back and check. But yeah, they did Sonia dirty.
I can't understand why Sega Lord X had yet to cover this. He said Bloodlines was his fav game for the Genesis and Castlevania is one of his favorite series. This should be a slam dunk for him.
A fantastic collaboration 🦇💕❤️ Resurrection had so many neat ideas. Bummer it was cancelled. Order of Ecclesia was a masterpiece 🦇 Maybe one day, when Castlevania returns, it will deliver something amazing. We need it back, it has been too long.

11:47 - Sonia defeating Dracula and then, after he said he'd return (and potentially attack her descendants), having a child with his son comes across as quite the power move. Lovely coverage of the topic here. It was interesting seeing the sketches and cinematic that I had not witnessed before. As a fan of the N64 Castlevania games and the Dreamcast, I'm rather saddened this game never came to be.
Good video! Looks intriguing, at least. The early 3D games were a bit hit and miss where fighting was involved, but were fun for platforming and exploring if the camera co-operated! :)

Nice collaboration, you two work well together. Sad that game never got made. Sonia seemed like a cool character, the run-from-the-hydra bit looked interesting and it would have been nice to get more of the Countess (apparently she was the same lady as the one in Bloodlines).

10:00 Castlevania 64 was one of the best 3D Castlvanias ever. Those people who mostly disliked it and talked to me, came always up with the arguement that a Castlevania would not work in a 3D environement. But the later releases on PS2 was really terrible with the clunky controls and the locked up areas and no one complained about those titles. Ok, there was another argument that it was Reinhard Schneider and not someone of the Belmont family, but this was not interfering the gamemechanics which was very smooth once you figured out the jump distance.
Did you use ROM's for the game scenes at the start of the video? I didn't realize that generation could be that clear and vibrant. That Tomb Raider was the best I've seen. Also, Hi Pam!!!!
TL;DR Great video and insightful trivia about this lost Castlevania game! Just wanted to clarify that Koji Igarashi most likely didn't take Sonia Belmont out of the canon because of a dislike for a female Belmomt, he did so because of the story in Legends not fitting in with the later games. Koji Igarashi would have been all for a female protagonist in a Castlevania game knowing that he worked as a programmer and was tasked with writing the story for a dating sim game called "Tokimeki Memorial" for the PC Engine's Super CD-ROM² System. The entire plot of Tokimeki Memorial is full of richly written female characters and themes of high school romance. Igarashi said once in an interview that Tokimeki Memorial was his favorite game he's ever worked on. Igarashi's next project was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, where he worked on scenario writing and programming and later met his wife who also worked on Symphony and gave him ideas back when he worked on Tokimeki Memorial. (Source: Tim Rogers Action Button Review of Tokimeki Memorial)
I didn't say Igarashi took her out because she's female, I mentioned that particular opinion was a rumour online, which I specified was a silly rumour. I specify in the video it was because Igarashi didn't like Legends. I also make a point of explaining that Sonia Belmont having a baby with Alucard also throws the entire timeline into disarray and compared it to Luke Skywalker. Xx
I still remember this coverage from Gamefan magazine. It makes me cry tears of BLOOD of how this title got cancelled! So unfair! Sonya deserved better than this!!!
Have you heard of the cancelled dream cast game named Agratha ? It was a survival winter horror game . I think you’d find it really interesting. There are dumped demos online and done people have game play online.
Only having one analog stick really hurt the dc. That caused a lot of devs to move on due to better control in 3d environments. Then when you add it was lacking 2 shoulder buttons, sega shot themselves in the foot.
i'm still hoping for castlevania 1999, not this game, but the whole julius belmont story. all we get is bits of info from that year from the sorrow games
@@LadyDecade total side note but no joke, I'm dead serious, I was looking at Nightmare Before Christmas video game listings (like the ones on GBA and Xbox/PS2) on Ebay on my phone when it gave me a notification you had replied to this. I said out loud "Are you kidding me?!" When I read it.
This is the first I'm hearing about this game; I'll definitely check out Erin Plays video on it after this video. I already follow her and Cannot Be Tamed :)
The first playable female lead could technically be considered to be Syha Belnades since all 3 protagonists are important and Portrait of Ruin also features Charlotte. Though I guess Shanoa is the first female solo lead. N64 Castlevanias are not that bad IMO. I'm not one of the fans but I think it's definitely underrated and bullied for no good reason. Not nearly as underrated as the PS2 games though, which are really good! To finish, about Victor, Lords of Shadow's canonicity is heavily debated. It contradicts many things pre-established by the series, especially Gabriel being Dracula. This makes every Belmont an even worse and cheaper Luke Skywalker than Sonia's baby did, breaks Lament of Innocence's Dracula origin story and just breaks a lot of things in the mythos. If it is canon, then a lot of the series has to be retconned. Tbh, with the critical reception of LoS2, they'll either go back to the old canon or fully reboot the franchise. I'm actually impatient to see what's next for the series. With Mercury Steam's experience with Samus Returns and Dread, I could give them another shot I guess, unlikely to happen however!
Your amazing I didnt know about this only secret I knew about dreamcast was if dreamcast could of held on before xbox of halo would of came to dreamcast I remember in 2000 a dreamcast magazine talked about the halo game but was canceled and moved to xbox hopefully you do a video on that

Great as always thank you for all the great work.
God I love Pam's choker. I would totally rock that if I could.
Parabéns pelo conteúdo, amo Castlevania.
The Pam lady sent us.
Lady Decade, Cannot Be Tamed & Erin Plays: The Unholy Trinity of retro gaming!
i'm still hoping for castlevania 1999, not this game, but the whole julius belmont story. all we get is bits of info from that year from the sorrow games
Spooky Lady Decade, Spooky Pam, and the topic is Castlevania? Is this Halloween or Christmas?
The Nightmare Before Christmas!
@@LadyDecade Yes! 😈🖤
I was so excited for this back in the day.
This is the first I'm hearing about this game; I'll definitely check out Erin Plays video on it after this video. I already follow her and Cannot Be Tamed :)
You should absolutely do more videos with Pam. And thanks for pronouncing it Bay-ta. You know how we Americans get triggered by Bee-ta.
Nice, to see pam here!
What a one two combo!
Yass the guests!!!
You should get a show on G4 when it goes live in November. You and your hubs have amazing content although I prefer watching you.
My favorite 2 ladies in gaming 😍 LD and Pam enough said great videos ladies.
Great video always
With Mercury Steam's experience with Samus Returns and Dread, I could give them another shot I guess, unlikely to happen however!
one of my most beautiful discoveries and release after Agartha hi hi hi
Awesome LD!
Nice video ladies!
lady decade & pam! great!
Some fans were doing some hacks featuring Sonya. Check 'em out!
Viva la Dreamcast
Sonia and Tim Curry from Home Alone 2. 6:08
Imagine first fighting vampires and being like what do we call them? Then all Belmomts are basically Blade haha
This channel is great. xoxo
“Tits up” I love that British slang lol
Sonia Belmont having a baby with Alucard is still a better plot point than having Gabriel Belmont becoming Dracula.
Haha fair enough! 😊
Your amazing I didnt know about this only secret I knew about dreamcast was if dreamcast could of held on before xbox of halo would of came to dreamcast I remember in 2000 a dreamcast magazine talked about the halo game but was canceled and moved to xbox hopefully you do a video on that

00:48 For those of you wondering why the end of the world didn't happen after 1999, you should all thank Jericho Cane.
I think we did not missed out on much.
