  • In 1999 Sega Dreamcast owners were looking forward to their very own Castlevania game. It never happened. In 2021 an E3 demo resurfaced of the game while it was in development. This is that demo.

    Episode Notes:
    1. Gameplay footage from redream. I also captured gameplay on real hardware but ran into problems with the 3 headed snake area loading.
    2. This game was canceled in April of 2000 after being postponed. If you go back, there is evidence Konami was originally expecting to release it at the launch of the DC in NA - 9/9/99.
    3. Playing something like this is tough because you have to give it some leeway for being unfinished work. You have to see the potential, if any. I honestly tried to do that.
    4. After this was canceled, it would take over 3 years for another console Castlevania to appear in 3D. The imperfect but vastly superior, Lament of Innocense.
    5. Konami released 10 games for the DC after this games original release date in January 2000. The idea it was canceled solely based on "a lack of confidence", is suspect at best.

@@MarquisDeSangUh... No. The Dreamcast had elements that PCs and other consoles took years to catch up to, such as hardware-level tiering for transparencies. Look at how badly the Sonic Adventure ports had to be downgraded in lighting and transparencies to work on the GameCube. The PS2 was actually not as impressive as the vaporware Sony marketed at the time, the PS2 did incredibly well because, among other reasons, Sony was a much bigger company than and would take massive losses on hardware, so the world suddenly had a DVD player for $299 at a time standalone DVD players would regularly be $400+. The Dreamcast was remarkable for its time, the only hardware related issues it had were Sega messed up bypassing the right analog, and they really messed up supporting that dumb Karaoke disc format that allows for rampant piracy after they spent so much time and effort creating the GD-ROM format.

For every modern retro style game that looks amazing like Cup Head, Toki, Wonderboy, Dragons Crown, there are thousands that look like suoer meat boy or shovel knight. In fact, the marker is flooded with Metroidvanias but the vast majority look like Super Nintendo era products. Don't game me wrong, many such as Blasphemous and Record Of Lodos War are amazing but just like you i would love to see a 2D Castlevania with the same amazing quality art style of Guilty Gear.

I think the 3DO couldn't be saved even if it was cheaper. I wound up playing the D&D Slayer games 99% of the time.
It was a huge jump over the last gen, but just not big enough, kind of like the PC Engine being a huge upgrade over the NES, but kind of lackluster compared to the mega drive and SNES.

Sorry 3DO cannot be saved no matter what Panasonic could have done slightly different. Its only killer title is Super Street Fighter II Turbo but the 3do controller is horrible, must have arcade stick to enjoy which are very rare. The Playstation really did kick each and every competition it had and is not afraid to upgrade from simple 8 button controller to dual shock which is truly revolutionary that time. I liked the Virtual Boy but it cannot be saved as well. The Saturn and N64 could have been saved but alas their leaders are stubborn back then...

The 3DO was beyond saving. Trip Hawkins was so bitter about being dictated the terms for publishing games on Japanese consoles he vowed to destroy their business model by developing a MSX-style standard any electronics manufacturer could develop a machine for, with low royalties and little regulation. Sounded great in theory, but this meant manufacturers couldn't sell their 3DO's break even/at a loss and the low barrrier to entry meant a lot of low quality games. Then the true next generation of consoles arrived and it was curtains.

Castlevania Legacy of Darkness on the N64 is one of my most beloved Castlevania games and I play through it every couple of years. Looking at the demo footage of Resurrection here, I can tell that the camera control and combat are just not up to the quality of LOD. It's a good thing that this game was cancelled, but the Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness on the PS2 did nothing to further Castlevania in the 3D space. At this point, I don't think we'll ever get a 3D Castlevania that exceeds Legacy of Darkness.

Tecmo, Sega, Capcom, Namco, and Konami were making a lot of belt scrolling, 2D, and 3D fighting games, so they created the foundation for the early 3D action games with MH, DMC, Dynamite Cop, Jet Set, Spike Out, Rygar, power stone, God Hand, Zombie Revenge, Die Hard Arcade, SOUL EDGE, CYBER TROOPERS VIRTUAL-ON (1995) , etc.
(DMC is also heavily influenced by Ocarina of Time, but it has the essence of fighting games and Belt-Scroll games.)
Lords of Shadow is just one of many DMC-like games that proliferated, especially in the West, during the PS2 and 3 era. Developed by Mercury Team.
Konami has not been able to have as much influence as Nintendo or Capcom in 3D action games.
FromSoftware has praised Nintendo and Capcom in the past in interviews.
If Konami had held up well in the 3D era, they could have earned the honor of From Software.

I was drooling over the screenshots back then but SLX is right, It would take a studio an enormous amount of time to implement all the features you would expect from a 3D action game just to make it more bearable (camera, physics and collision, enemy ai and, more importantly for this type of game, level design X ) ). Also I don't think the source code was released, only that build of the game so Unless you're a hex magician, there is no way to fix this.

It had been in development for 6 months at the very least, if not longer. It was also first believed to have been a DC launch game. Gameplay slapped together for E3 this was not.

I remember reading that Konami was handing this off to another company and in my heart of hearts already knew it was going to suck. Then I saw the images from the game come out and my fears were confirmed. Like you say, it was early but it was scheduled to release at a certain time and no way was it going to be any better. I'm not a big fan really of the N64 games and these images just made me feel that thats what we were going to get. An N64 game on the Dreamcast. I'm sorry not sorry it got canceled. And just seriously what was Konami thinking back in the day. First Contra and then CV. Dreadful decision Konami! Should have kept them in house!

Lament of Innocence (PS2) did a super fine job of replacing this as the defacto 3D Castlevania on that generation! The Dreamcast has its great share of titles specially from Capcom like Code Veronica or even from its rival Namco's Soul Calibur or Tecmo's Dead or Alive. Too bad Sega mismanaged their company back then forcing them to abandon Dreamcast and consoles altogether. Sega is thriving now though and I play each and every Like a Dragon game... Just finished Gaiden twice and is scratching the surface of Infinite Wealth...

I think this game looked decent. It still needed more work, but I think it would have been a fun title to play. I think the biggest reason they pulled the plug was because the dreamcast was already showing signs it was coming to an end. If this was to be on the PS2 or original XBox, then I bet they would not have canceled it. Of course, that's just my opinion.

A lot of games that were initially slated for the Dreamcast were ported over to other systems, and I dont see why Konami wouldnt have done the same with this game if they thought it held great deal of potential.

  • @Cruxics
    @Cruxics 2 місяці тому +1

Ya this had a long way to go. Camera in particular needed to be redesigned, the games that I'd use as examples didn't exist yet when this prototype was announced, I don't even think Ico was out yet. Camera types that Lords of Shadow managed to pull off excellently. If i was Konami, cancellation would have been the best bet, reboot the project on PS2. Not a dreamcast issue, but I feel like with something a bit more power and a better controller design would likely fix some of the struggles the western team was having.
Level design was just bad as well. I don't even think that auto tracking lock on system would have solved any of it. Anyone who has put a camera system together on old hardware (even new hardware) will tell you all the pitfalls that are needed to build an AI around moving it around without blinding the player. There were a lot of good attempts back then, but low resolution ray casts can only take you so far before you're basically building a line of sight spawn system in order to adjust your camera's lookat every few frames. That is with adding delayed turning to keep your player from getting sick.
There are games that are in pretty bad shape leading into E3, I've seen (and been on ) projects where some demo's just didn't come together until the 11th hour. I can say with utmost certainty, this game is now one of them. Not unless it was such an old build of the game that it represented a design 4 or 5 version old and a build from a year prior to this thing being produced.

I didn’t realize there was even a playable version until the leak. I thought all of the screen grabs were just CG. I find the graphics to be very impressive for an early DC game, albeit needing some tuning for consistent framerate. I can tell a lack of lock on would have been a major problem, along with the camera from this video. If they had treated it a bit more like film, perhaps it could have been salvaged, breaking up the level design into scenes, like a beat em up, but with that extra finesse staging the scene for action with a great camera system.

Fair review. If Capcom was able to pull off Code Veronica and if Konami took the same approach it would of turned out well. But I feel console tech was not ready for a 3D Castlevania. I think if they did a sequel to SOFTN on the Dreamcast, it would be awesome..

  • @mattb6522

It is a shame that Castlevania Resurrection wasn't shaping up as they has planned. It would have been interesting if they had let the Japanese division of Konami handle a Castlevania title on the Dreamcast to see if the results would be better. Maybe they could have not made the game full 3D, but either 2D or 2.5D to make it more focused for an action game? Either way, the writing was on the wall for the Dreamcast anyways at that time, so I'm guessing Konami was hesitant to release it for a dying console regardless.
I actually really like Legacy of Darkness (except for the wonky camera). It hits all the right notes for a 3D Castlevania even if it isn't quite as good as most of the 2D entries. I feel it gets unfairly bashed. I mean, I'd rather play Legacy of Darkness over something like Castlevania II Simon's Quest any day of the week.

I haven't played and suck at determining quality from looking at a video, but I wonder. I saw a video on TMNT games and a Konami dev said that their licensed games sold SO well that they cut plans for another Castlevania game on the NES, and from then on a lot of their good devs were put on licensed games rather than Konami's original ones in the fourth gen era. I wonder if that just escalated- less and less teams on the games that were considered "risks". Hence why they left games to their US teams in the fifth gen when moving to 3D unless they had strong champions in the company, like the Goemon series. A tactic that doesn't seem to have given them the rewards they hoped for...

As a developer I would have prioritized the a solid and fun gameplay loop (lock-on system, camera control and good player control). They had Zelda for N64 as a template. What I see in this prototype is just some nice graphics put together but no care at all about what makes a game really fun. I suppose Konami is not Nintendo when it came to design around gameplay.
It's weird Konami always struggled with 3D action gameplay (aside Silent Hill and MGS) considering their proficiency creating 2D action gems.

  • @samuraicollector2903
    @samuraicollector2903 2 місяці тому

I wouldn’t even call this a demo, a demo is a finished product you show to some people, like in an expo, maybe as a free disc inside a magazine, inside another game or as a download, so because this demo is not finished it is really a prototype.
Actually I can see the chapel, castle thing reminds me so much to the lament of inocence, so maybe they reused many ideas in that game.
And this was the reason it was cancelled, for some reason I can see so much similarity between 2 games, castlevania 64 and lament of inocence, so I think they used many ideas from the n64 game, and after they cancelled it, probably they used many of the ideas into lament of inocence. But the ps2 game was a great game, that’s how you make a 3d castlevania.
But since 2014 we haven’t had any new castlevania, I wonder how long would take to get a new game?
