They formed to defend themselves. It wasn't a gang per se when it started but as people started getting deported, all they knew is the gang life and they completely destroyed El Salvador.

MS-13 may have been born in the US but its worser in Central America. Go to Guatemala for a day and you'll see why. On my first day visiting, 26 people were murdered by gang violence on a single day. 18 of those killed were done by MS members 7 of those killings within a 3mile radius from where I staying at. They will kill you for the shoes you have on and even if you surrender them they might still kill you. One of uncles was abducted by MS members got his car stolen and was thrown in a ditch tied up and left to die. Luckily for him someone found him and helped him out. One of my other uncles didnt get so lucky. He was at a mechanic shop that was working close to MS. They would come and ask for ransoms when customers with a bit more cash showed up. My uncle made the mistake to pay with US dollars some youngster came in with a blade and tried to rob my tio. My uncle kicked his little ass and threatened to kill the boy if he came back well the boy came back with older heads all of who gunned my uncle down in the middle of the street til they ran out of bullets. My uncle died 15 days after in ICU from his injuries. MS-13 is ruthless. The way I see it, whats the point of kicking them out when they can cross right back in. Especially when US college students here believe they deserve rights. All these students here have no clue to how ruthless they actually are. Until you see someone get murdered in broad daylight on a popullated street and see nobody around the murder care its real distrubing. The worst part is I cant tell whats more disturbing the fact that someone was gunned down 25 feet infront of me or the fact that everyone carried on as if nothing happened, as if it was the norm. Oh yeah and Guatemalas Military Police walking around with assualt rifles they didnt open fire nor did they react to sound of gunfire, they just did their own thing, they only turned back and saw the victim on the ground with a puddle of blood on the floor. At that time I had never witnessed a murder I was shocked down to the bones. I never seen a man drop so fast to the ground let alone someone to pull a trigger so fast and not hesitate to ensure he finished his victim, to put a gun over the lifeless body on the floor and to keep pulling the trigger.
Guatemala is nothing comprared to El Salvador its neighboring country, which has the highest murder rate in the world with one gang having majority of control MS-13.

As someone who grew up in D.C. I must say, your portrayal of MS13 from my subjective experience, is spot on, I grew up with a lot of those kids who for the most part just wanted to be affiliated with the gang as it was seen partly as a tie to their El Salvadorian roots, and partly due to a twisted glorification of gang culture which in some ways was seen as cool. But by and large, most of those kids were not gang members, and still are not today.

Dani , what you say is true to an extent, but you must take context into any situation. The poverty of the favelas would make the young and impoverished much more vulnerable to become affiliated with gangs, as a means of escaping poverty, than that of the relatively much wealthier suburban D.C. area of which I grew up, where most people were working middle class, thus the pressure to join gangs wan not nearly as extensive, and was really just a means to "look cool".

Jih Like, in any major US city, at least the ones I'm familiar with, the city is considered to be the city proper, and the immediate surrounding areas/towns/suburbs. For example, even though this vid mentions that MS13 is located in DC, this is not technically true, as the el Salvadorian population in DC proper is very very small, but the El Salvadorian population in the surrounding suburbs(of Maryland and Virginia, ie the metropolitan area) is by comparison much larger, but when the media mentions areas, they generally mention the associated major city, as its much easier for those unfamiliar with the region, to have a general idea of the area in question.
Notice how they interview their own reporters as authoritative sources and not any of the actual members or FBI or police that track the gangs or even former gang members.
They also didn't interview people from the community where MS13 reigns.
this video just tells the story these reporters wrote in their articles. If you read the articles, they contain the actual sources. You just have to dig a little deeper.

It was started my refugees/immigrants vets from El Salvador that either escaped or survived the civil war (backed my the US and Russia) between the government and the FMLN. When they came to SoCal they were primarily targeted and terrorized by Mexican and (predominantly) African American gangs that were there during the 1980’s, MS-13 was initially created for protection then.

You know im a fan of Vox they tend to make really great informative videos but this video is wrong in so many ways smh.

It's easy to cherry pick the kids that aren't dangerous criminals. But when you look at the horrible crimes members have committed, you cannot deny the damage they have done. Overall, this video is a complete failure and misrepresentation of facts
Due to MS13 being a very decentralised group, it is not worth it to group them all together really. It is would be like grouping Albert Einstein and Goering together because they were both German. The point here is not to try to paint the criminals as good guys, but rather to show that the wrong people are being targeted.

Dillon Blair Some kids join MS 13 for social protection. MS13 serves as a overarching social group so people can band together, almost like a coalition. Same things happens in the political world. It is a bit for political protection, but mostly as a coalition so they can get their views across. The Republican Party does have its bad apples, and so does every other group. When you focus on charging the group as a whole, you end up wasting resources instead of using those resources to prevent the problem. Charging high school kids who joined the group for protection is not going to help anything. It will make students of Latin American descent feel ostracised by law enforcement, the people who are supposed to protect them. But rather a “rehabilitation” (I forgot the English word for it, maybe transition is better) programmes that help the child socially, such as athletic, academic, and artistic groups and programmes are going to decrease gang involvement in teens of Latin American descent. You only reserve the incarcerations and harsh penalties for the adult members who do commit horrible crimes. I believe a few European areas implemented this type of programmes to decrease gang involvement and drug use among teens, I think mainly in Switzerland, Kristiania Denmark, and some areas in Portugal (I can’t remember the exact places and time).

I'm from El Salvador (but nor living there nor the US). Thank you so much, Vox and Propublica, for this video. It really tells the untold story -that much of the incredible violence that Central America is living did in fact come originally from the US, and the policy of deporting violent immigrants to a country destroyed by a decade-long war financed by the US and USSR/Cuba wasn't a smart choice then, nor now. El Salvador just didn't have the institutions nor the capacity to handle these groups, and they grew without control. However, there is a side that you didn't explore - that many of the firearms used by these gangs in El Salvador and other countries come from the US, due to the almost inexistent gun control laws and illegal trafficking of them. I know that's a controversial topic on the US, but unfortunately, if it doesn't get fixed, we will never see the end of these gangs... And the only people who will benefit are the firearms manufacturers, because, in El Salvador, many "good people" also have to carry guns, and the violence levels increase overall. I leave to you to explore any possible connection between the extreme right's rhetoric about arms and gangs/immigration.
From Houston, in middle and high school almost a fifth of the kids I knew were in MS-13. Most weren't involved in violent crime, it was just a way for them to have a family that they didn't have at home and for protection from other gangs that were far more violent.

My friend used to live in an MS-13 area. She couldn’t walk to school and her mum triple locked the military door. She had to get a car to drive her to school and a lot of the students in her class were children of MS-13 gang members. She’s now extremely scared of bikes as said in the video they travel on bikes. Ms-13 is a gang that poor men/boys who didn't grow up with fathers join. I have sympathy for the young boys who join because they have no one or are being forced to. However I'm sick and tired of being lumped in with these people when I say I'm Central American. This gang was born out of LA during the Salvadoran war that the US very much funded. The Mara started out as a group to protect themselves from other gangs especially Mexican gangs IN THE US. It's quite horrific when you go back to El Salvador and see that they basically control the government and the government gives them money too in exchange for votes . It's all a big mess. They are dangerous and there's no other way then to jail them all or give them the death penalty.

The founder were kids who were already lived in LA for years that were being treated like crap by Chicano gangs especially 18th Street. My mom grew up in El Salvador during the civil war. She says there wasn’t any gang violence before the war and now El Salvador is full of gang violence. It’s disgusting what MS-13 does, I literally have family that’s been killed by them, and family that’s joined them. They are horrible, and maybe their aren’t as many as them as any other gang in the U.S, but rest assured, they’re just as evil.
