    Touring Bike with 2 sets of brakes on drops, with a shorter and taller stem. Hybrid width tires. More upright, good hand position options, stable, and a bike you can put a set of albatross swept back bars on if desired or just a riser stem. Lots of options.

    I bought a Raleigh venture 3.0 used. It has helped me get the feel for riding all the time and I really enjoy it, but want to upgrade. Do not want a full on road bike, not ready for that speed and physical endurance. Have been looking at Cannondale quick cx 3 or 4, or the specialized crosstrail, or the cannondale quick. What would you recommend under $800? I will do more road riding, but want to go a little off road at times to keep the enthusiasm going.

    There's a misconception that a hybrid also doubles as a mountain bike. They don't. The gearing between the two are much different, the tyres on a mountain bike don't coast well on pavement, there aren't shocks on a hybrid. So toss that out. A hybrid, in this case, is a road bike with straight handlebars, slightly wider tyres and maybe a different seat. The difference is comfort, especially for those of us who are getting up there in age.
    I have both. While the road bike is faster, it doesn't do me much good when it's uncomfortable to ride which sucks the life out of any enjoyment of the activity. I also spent a lot of time looking down at a spot 40 feet in front of me because of the position. Riding the road bike is more difficult because of back issues, thickness around the middle (it happens to most of us as we get older), flexibility and the like.
    I love my hybrid. It's exclusively a road bike but with the upright position I find I can go further without pain. The upright position allows me to enjoy the view more and doesn't put as much stress on my wrists and back. The result of being able to ride longer and more consistently is that I'm actually just as fast on the hybrid because the more comfortable position allows me to put more effort into peddling than fighting various back/breath/body issues that occurred on the road bike.
    If you're thin, flexible or racing, then you want a road bike. If you're more of a casual rider, older, thicker and/or just not very flexible then the hybrid is a far more pleasant ride. I've timed myself on both on relatively short distances (5k) and the difference in speed - except in windy conditions - is negligible. If I were still racing duathlons then I'd have a road bike. But for that weekend pleasure ride, the hybrid is far more enjoyable.

    I have both, I ride my Giant Comfort Hybrid most of the time. Comfortable, Safe, Sidewalks, Trail, Park, Rough Roads, Beach anywhere and enjoy ride, surroundings and ability to stop anywhere along the way. I take the road bike out sometimes but more dangerous although it feels great going longer distances with speed. Probably have more fun in road bike group. Both are nice, not into the road/hybrids. Having a comfort hybrid and pure fit to size performance road bike is the way to go.

  • @303woolf

    Well imo what you showed on video it may be still confusing for most of people who struggling to decide...
    Hybrid shown on video it's still more a "city sprinter" (as subcategory of road bike) than hybrid. Let me tell you why.
    Whoever was riding road/racer bikes will agree that this bikes have quite wide turning circle and qick manoeuvres in busy traffic are limited... in order to improve manoeuvrability people started to mount flatbars on their road bikes.
    Now hybrid imo it's a bike which is combination between road bike and mountain bike, meaning construction which gives you decent capabilities on both road and off-road.
    Larger weels than MTB's improves speed but a bit wider tyres than road bike improves versatility. Add lockable front suspension and now we talking about serious hybrid ;)

I live in Toronto so it's pretty urbanized but sometimes I'm at the park on grass or on dirt. So I guess a hybrid fits my needs. But most of my friends have those small 'bmx' bikes... Anyone know any cheap companies for hybrid bikes? Please help!

    got a hybrid recently with no suspension and its perfect for roads or paved bike paths with the kenda kwick 35's it came with...prob not road bike fast but its no slouch and can handle trails and gravel too if its not too rough. unless you're planning on doing most of your riding on serious trails I'd say research the hybrid option as there's many styles to choose from...

      Mary Annette Flores I agree I bought a road bike thinking more about speed than anything and I had to resell it cause I started having back pain so I went to a different shop and the seller was very knowledgeable about bikes and got me a hybrid which I love, my bike feels better and the speed difference is not that significant I can still ride fast and got better brakes which are hydraulic. Btw I needed a bike to commute and maybe to exercise a bit but nothing competitive, I sometimes join social groups that happen to go on bike rides so my hybrid bike is perfect

    • @DuVine
      @DuVine  9 років тому +5

      Hi there Heisenberg101! Although I do not know of any hybrids that sell with drops this is a customization you can do on your own. Choose a hybrid of your choice then switch out the flat handlebars with the drops. Measurements on bikes are quite specific so be sure to pay attention to the diameters. You may also want to look into cross bikes as they provide space for wider tires and durable frames meant for rugged terrain. Hope this is helpful!

    • @DuVine
      @DuVine  9 років тому +2

      Making “the switch” from hybrid to road can certainly be a daunting prospect, especially when you consider those oddly shaped handlebars and teeny tiny tires. However, it doesn’t have to be frightening, and there are lots of things you can do to make the transition an easy and simple one.
      1) Understand that riding position on a road bike is just like riding on a hybrid bike, only now you have the option to go farther and faster if you so choose, thanks to the reduced weight and thinner tires of the road bike.
      2) Curved or “Drop” handlebars on the road bike typically have 3 positions you can take with your hands; on the horizontal part of the bars for easy relaxed cruising, over the hoods of the brakes/shifters for a slightly more aggressive upright riding posture, and down “on the drops” which causes your body to shift down and forward, reducing drag and lowering your center of gravity. You can move your hand positioning between these three points regularly throughout your ride depending on the terrain you are riding in.
      3) Visit your local bike shop and ask if they have a loaner bike you can test out - it can be a big purchase and helps to have some experience to see if its right for you.

    • @DuVine
      @DuVine  8 років тому +1

      ***** building bikes is such a cool and fun way to have a one-of-a-kind ride. If you want the ability to shift gears bullhorns may not be your best solution. Road and MTB bikes use different shifting methods unique to the handle bars. If the bullhorns are a must then I'd recommend converting the bike to a single speed.

May not be as fast a road or cx bike , The handling for traffic and gravel, muddy ,sandy is great . And you can turn your hybrid into a CX , by changing shifters , handle bars and cable . I have a fuji 3.0 newest road/sport bike. I am thinking about changing drops to straight bar. in my opinion. If you doing straight commutes to work and do errand on bike and want weekend adventure . Hybrid way to go. Not to mention you can add accessories and do modifications. Because its a " hybrid "

Your bikes should cost at least as much as your car would or you are doing it wrong. ;D

    If you are a serious racer then get a road bike, but I think the majority of people will be better suited to the hybrid. Road bikes are great if you just ride on smooth roads all day, but the majority of places are not like that.

    Personally, I went for a road bike for performance/distance and will get a mountain bike for comfort/leisure/offroad. Hybrids seems to try to be a jack of all trade but do neither optimal. Can't hang w the roadies nor with the off roaders.

    For Urban/City commuting my choice would either be a hybrid or a hardtail mountain bike actually! Maybe swap out offroad tires on the HT MTB for city/commuting tires and you're gold!

    Just do yourself a favor and don't get a hybrid. Have nice roads and lots of paved trails? Get a road bike! Live around rough terrain and have a lot of local singletrack trails? Get a mountain bike! Like going on long distance rides that may have some rough terrain, get a CX!
    But there are sub categories to explore too, like:
    What type of road bike do you want? There are 3 major geometries, full race, endurance, and in between. Choose depending on the style of riding you prefer. Short fast rides? Race geometry. Long leisurely rides? Endurance!
    What type of mountain bike? Hard tail (front suspension only) Soft tail (full suspension) or rigid (no suspension)?
    Choose depending on your terrain. How technical are your trails? Are you hitting hardcore singletrack? Or are you just commuting and maybe taking it out on the backroads for the weekend?
    Also, please do not buy a "cheap" bike. If you are on a tight budget, figure out what size frame you need and keep an eye out for used Treks, Giant, Specialized etc. on eBay or CL, as they pop up frequently at very affordable prices. A lot of times people buy the wrong size or just want to upgrade or get the newer model, and their loss can be your gain. But buy from walmart/kmart etc. and I guarantee, their gain will be your loss.
