  • This is Sally Riggs, Psychologist, fellow long-hauler and your long COVID coach.
This week, I want to talk about something that might seem controversial: the three states in our nervous system are all functional, and each has a purpose for our bodies.
And so its important for us to move through that process and complete the cycle of the state we're in, rather than fighting it or trying to runaway.

Thank you 🙏🏻 i have a question regarding whether poor energy generation and the bodies response to this (temp disregulation, raised HR, headaches, gut issues, etc) further enhances the freeze state and if so is that why it's so hard to move to a different state and can make PEM crashes worse ? I have had LC for 2.5 years and wonder whether its possible to shift states if our biology just isnt functioning? Thanks Doc 🙏🏻

Yes Claire that’s 100% correct. Because our mitochondria aren’t creating energy efficiently it’s harder for us to move up. That’s why mitochondrial supports can help a LOT and I do talk about those. That’s also why it’s crucial that we don’t waste energy on unimportant things (like emptying the dishwasher) cos if we do we won’t have it to get out of freeze.

Thank you this is very helpful. I have a question: when you say leaning into that freeze state do you mean really doing nothing at all?

More than that. I mean embracing doing nothing at all. Literally nothing.

When you are in the freeze-respons and you start to dissociate because you're so overwhelmed after doing some activity, is this than a type of dissociation or is this brain fog? I read in the CBT-protocol that dissociation is treated by evoking it and learning that it's not dangerous, but this seems totally unacceptable to me when having long covid, because you are already totally overwhelmed. What seems the best to me is just resting till you come out of the overwhelm, like you said. Am I right? How do you see this?

Yes this is dissociation. Nothing to do with brain fog. I don't use CBT with long covid as it is prohibited by NICE guidelines and many others. But if you are able to use the polyvagal strategies recommended for LC and fight or flight your dissociation should decrease.

Thank you. I really support your opinion in this. And I was thinking the same goes for cfs. The part of the protocol where is told to force yourself beyond your boundaries makes me really upset and I hope they wille change it in the protocol.
