My all-time favorite Alfred Hitchcock, no show of recent times comes even close to these shows in quality. They did such wonderful shows with such limited technology
The episode has a problem in the basic plot. A dog is old at 13 years. Kerry Blue dogs typically die 12-13. This man knew that Annie was old and that she was getting sickly as old beings usually do. The story the wife tells is utterly believable. It makes sense the dog would die at that age. The wife said the dog wasn't breathing and she couldn't feel a heartbeat. What reason was there to believe the dog was buried alive? None at all.
I found the plot rather odd, almost unbelievable. Dogs don't live past teen years (usually). 13 years old for a dog is in fact like 90 years old for a human. The dog had already been acting sickly. The man should have expected Annie to die soon. You don't have to be a veterinarian to realize there is no breathing or not heartbeat. It didn't make sense to just the dog's dead body in the house until the vet could "officially" say she was dead. There simply was no reason to believe Thelma buried the dog alive!
Me too. Reception was pretty dubious way down on the southern border of Texas when the nearest tv stations were in San Antonio. I was a kid growing up in the 50s/early 60s and all the tv sets were B&W like the one this was recorded from; that was just as well because I imagine Hitchcock wasn't in color anyway.
@@davidm9618 Yes, but it resembles what bad reception might like back in the day - sometimes you could fix it by tweaking the TV set's vertical hold knob.

Was very happy to find this video (warts and all). Thank you for the upload. I think much of the 1950s/60s TV for general audiences was much more provocative and edgy and intelligent than what started to happen in the late 1970s, 80s and especially the 90s. "Prime Time" became so dumbed down, offensive and stupid as time went on. Not to mention the insufferable laugh tracks. Give me a Hitchcock or Twilight Zone episode any day, and I'm up for it.
It may not be that unusual for people to be more attached to pets than partners. A woman wrote to Dear Abby saying her husband smoked all the time. She tried to get him to quit by pointing out that she could have her health damaged by 2nd hand smoke but it didn't affect him. Then she read an article saying it applied to dogs. He instantly threw his cigs in the trash! "If anything happened to Champ, I'd never forgive myself!" he exclaimed. He stopped smoking that day.
I remember when television was mostly show and few commercials. Now, it’s unwatchable because of so many mind numbing commercials.. I disconnected my cable three years ago, and I don’t even think about hooking back up.
I LOVE me some Carmen Mathews. She started in many AHP episodes, and was always great. This was not a Mathews favorite of mine, but nevertheless it's still a must see.
I like Carmen Matthews also. There are other must see episodes. The impossible dream another hitch presents, my personal favorite is static a twilight zone episode enjoy
I think the irony was supposed to be that by accidently killing himself he saved his wife's life. The neighbour who heard him fall would have called emergency services and they would have noticed that something was wrong with her as well. Perhaps they noticed the empty pill bottle in the kitchen and gave her an emetic such as charcoal.
Although the plot seems weird to me, the acting is superb, particularly that of Carmen Matthews. Every note she hits is perfect. It's believable when she is groggy and scared through her grogginess. Gene Evans is also credible in an increasingly unsympathetic role as the man whose grief for his dog drives him to utter madness.
@@deannaadkins9212 I think his wife was so beaten down and intimidated that she was just thankful to make it through another day alive. It feels as if they had been married quite a while, did she not see warning signs sooner? His nasty side must have shown early on.
