- Isolated drums. First time we hear Mike playing Dream Theater's Panic Attack from Octavarium since he's back in the band! Here we can hear drum track only, his Tama Starclassic drums in all their glory, his groove and swing untouched from the golden days. I can't wait to hear what they sound like together.
This is a really good way to study and dissect the nuances of his playing and what makes it sounds so special and so personal.

Yeah, i tend to like drummers that make the songs sound great too. Cozy, vinnie Appice, Neil Peart, Lars, Menza, Bonham, Les Binks, etc. Those are all geniuses in my books!

Nah. Gavin Harrison is much more creative, more varied, and even heavier, and even Portnoy can't match his musicality. Then Blake Richardson is much better with polyrhythms, including everything else. And the same goes for Stef Broks, who also has much better dynamics. Portnoy's playing sounds old-fashioned next to theirs. Oh, and then there is Bobby Jarzombek who is unbeatable at anything.
@amjan when it comes to the mix and sound I like portnoy alot better. The drummers you listed are great and better in diffrent areas but portnoy has the best mix of all elements for prog metal, no one sounds quite as good to listen to for me
@@austinsatterfield4981 Potnory has the poorest mix. And DT is the only band where he sounds right. In all of his other bands he is quite boring and repetitive.

@@bishopoftroy lol it doesn't matter if he played it all in one take, if its sloppy its sloppy. If making music was only about getting through the song in one take without playing accurately or cleanly, music would suck donkey schlong.

Hahaha I know it's very petty, but as a fan, I kind of think the same.
Who knows. Most drummers can play other drummers stuff. I don’t listen to DT religiously, so to my knowledge I haven’t heard any of the songs with the other drummer. It’s different with singers though. I haven’t seen Asking Alexandria play anything from The Black album with that Dennis Stoff dude since Danny returned.

I loved what mangini did too but it didn't feel like classic dreamtheater for sure
I’d save just some tunes from ADTOE, the first one with Mangini still had some soul in it
