I am Japanese. There are areas of Japan, especially in urban areas such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, that are adversely affected by excessive numbers of foreign tourists. However, there are many minor cities and regions that are rarely visited by foreign tourists. If possible, avoid Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto and visit regions such as Kyushu, Tohoku, and Shikoku.

Thank you for sharing your opinion.
Foreign tourists visit mainly Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima, which are called the Golden Route. The Japanese government is also considering measures to attract foreign tourists to rural areas as a countermeasure against over-tourism.

@@danal81 That is correct. Probably because tourists are attracted to cities that are better known.

@@realstage1925 so you are saying there are a lot of less-known places that are not any less worth visiting even if it means spending, for example, less time in places that are known. I guess. That is definitely something to consider.

I love traveling to Japan in the winter because I don’t mind the snow. For some reason most tourists hate colder weather so this is a bonus. I can even get away with booking hotel rooms the night before visiting another prefecture in the winter.

My favorite time to visit Japan is October to November time frame. The weather is cool and clear, trees are changing color and not so many foreign tourists. Also, I like end of July to August because of Bon Odori and Awa Dori season. O-Bon season Tokyo is not busy because most people take time off. December to January is great if a person has friends and family in Japan. For skiing and Snowboarding: First two weeks in February is fantastic time due to high snow levels, Ice & Snow festivals, and Onsen after skiing. Hokkaido has some of the best powder snow in the world, and in my opinion, Sapporo has the best Ramen in the world (Sushi as well).

I have been visiting Japan every year for past 10 years. Very good tips in this video. Highly recommended all who want to visit Japan to watch the whole video. One more thing to add, Japan’s country side is really beautiful, and it is very convenient to rent a car from nearby any major train station to explore the less crowded places. Use google translate to help communicate with the locals who may not be comfortable at speaking English.

Personally, I went for 3 weeks during August of last year. I knew it would be hot, but I live in Southern California, so I'm used to very hot dry weather. The weather wasnt as hot, but the humidity was high. All in all, it didn't affect my trip at all.
My birthday month is August, and I really wanted to attend the Nagaoka Hanabi Festival. Also, the only surrounding holiday is Obon, and there are festivities related to it that are tourist friendly.
If you're not heat averse and enjoy festivals, I personally would recommend going in August as its no longer rainy season, tourism is low, and festivities are high.

With excruciating heat and humidity, I suffered from a heat stroke in one of my visits. I was born and grew up in Tokyo until 1970, so you may think I was well aware of the summer heat. However, after residing in a colder climate for most of my life and especially with the global warming, the heat was incredible! For me, the best time to visit Japan is late October and early November.

I live in Sweden, but I lived in Kyoto for 6 months in 2020. The rainy season IS rainy, but it doesn't rain every day. It's quite warm so it feels refreshing when it does rain, although I'm not too keen on the smell of wet asphalt. (I have a VERY sensitive nose). Japanese people will say that the japanese summer is very, very hot. However I just thought it was nice. I think this is at least in part due to japanese people being very well dressed.
Dressing like a tourist (tshirt and shorts) will instantly make it feel much nicer. If you do want to blen in a bit more, you might want to go to a japanese clothing store and buy a short sleeve shirt.
Also remember that japanese people have a different biology, they have fewer apocrine sweat glands compared to people of european descent. Apocrine glands produce a thicker, odoriferous sweat, while eccrine glands produce a more watery sweat, which means it will be rubbed off much easier. However, you are likely to feel the high humidity, which will stick to your skin and cool you off as you walk. I really only sweated if I was carrying something heavy or walked very fast.
You want to expose as much of your body as possible to the humidity and you will stay cool and refreshed.
Another thing is drinking to stay hydrated. Try to taste as many of the new drinks in the vending machines as possible. Also, try to eat tonkatsu or chickenkatsu as it contains a lot of very good things your body needs to adjust to the heat.
Do that, and every day except the most extreme will just feel like nice summer days and not at all too hot.
On the hottest days you do want to try to walk in the shade as much as possible though.
I agree with golden week, but one thing I think is missing is picking a good spot for your hotel/ryokan.
If you stay near horikawa gojo in Kyoto for example then you are within walking distance of the station, the shopping streets, many of the best tourist spots in Kyoto, the bar scene and Gion. By walking instead of taking a bike you get to see so much more. Japanese people are used to seeing all the things that overwhelm westerners. Trust me, you will need some extra time to take it all in, and walking is ideal for that.
I would say from sakura season to mid september, but avoiding golden week is all good.

Okinawa is beautiful and food was authentic Japanese food for lunch and dinner with buffet breakfast in my 4 to 5 star hotels , the local Japanese tour agency used by my country agent is truly awesome. I have been to most parts of Japan , I will revisit Japan again. I usually pick the autumn season.

I am not Japanese, living in Tokyo for more than 8 years. I recommend not paying attention to the recommendations of this guy. Come to Japan anytime of the year. Tokyo is empty during the golden week. Kyoto was perfect during corona, now it is impossible anytime. The rainy season in 2023 was almost nonexistent and similarly this year, so far (June 13, 2024) almost no rain. End of march, beginning of April is sakura blossoming, I have been coming to Japan since 2009 as a tourist at that time of the year, until I became a resident. I never realized about the end of the fiscal year or travels of school kids. That is a silly observation. But definitely, the most silly recommendation is to avoid visiting Japan during the sakura blossoming, I don't understand what is in his mind.

    • @LiHild

Maybe the problem is not that it’s more difficult to travel for foreigners during these periods, maybe the problème is that the Japanese people are afraid of being annoyed by foreigners ? 🤔
And if we can avoid Japanese people to be fed up of tourists, it’s better for everyone.

The problem is everyone comes for the sakura blossoming. So while they get to see Sakura if they are lucky, their experience of Japan is overcrowded. I have been to landmarks in japan and been the only person there. I have walked quiet streets and not had to book tickets and things and think that is the ideal time to get the “Japan experience” from movies and anime. Sakura blossoming, may as well be in a different country and that’s great for the many many people who love tourist cities, tons of people enjoy the crowds. But just be aware that is what happens if you go to Japan in April, you may as well be in Rome, New York, India etc. It’s not “Japan” so much as a tourist hub. For real experience you will come quieter time.

I just returned from Tokyo today, after having spent almost three weeks there, and (having visited some of the countryside and Mt. Fuji as well), September was sunny almost the entire time. Except for usually around 32C weather, which was often humid, it was still somehow wonderful. Some Japanese friends who live there were more than happy and anxious to show me around. There was barely any rain during most of September, 2024, but if I (hopefully) visit again, I would definitely come in October, before any other month! Except for the confusion of the massive Shinjuku Station at first, I even managed to get around Tokyo by myself at least four times. What an incredible place!

This also gives us a few more days to better learn the language! Kanji is hard!

I went there end of June/July and it wasn't always wet. But it was hot and humid and some places were a bit quieter. Next time I'll head to the less touristy areas at it seems to be a real issue now and I don't want to add to the problem.

Just came from March 27th - Apr 16th, yea it was busy and yes tourist areas where very crowded. But there is so many other locations to explore and enjoy without having to go near a lot of those areas.

Honestly, I visited Japan last August and I do not regret it one bit. So much so that I am returning in August again this year. Summer is amazing in Japan; less tourists (relatively) and spending time in Hokkaido in the summer is breathtaking! For context, I have hyperhidrosis and sweat excessively when it is even 15 celsius outside. I used clinical grade anti-perspirant for my trip last summer and it worked miracles! The humidity will definitely get you though... But you do get used to it and I grew to enjoy the smell of that heavy air... Weird..

If you wanna go to Comiket, you gotta tough it out. Summer Comiket is usually in August and Winter Comiket is pretty much New Years day.

I'm glad I could help you.
It is hot in summer. However, it doesn't rain every day during the rainy season in Japan.
