I’ve received so many questions about this topic, so in today’s video, I’ll explain 8 reasons why central heating isn’t common in Japanese homes, diving into the cultural and practical background behind it.
By the end of this video, not only will you understand more about Japan’s unique culture, but you’ll also pick up tips to stay warm and enjoy your trip here during the colder months. Plus, experiencing how Japanese people stay cozy could make your trip even more memorable!

Do you want Chinese tourists though..
Well. That’s it. Japan is officially ruined.😢 Mass-immigration”tourism”… is the last thing Japan needs.
I’m so glad I’ve visited the most popular places already 10 years ago. I’ll be visiting again but will avoid popular places like Kyoto. I’ll go to Hokkaido instead. I can’t stand crowded places.
I was surprised Japan was only rank no.11 for 2024 in number of tourist arrivals ... thought it would be top 5 Saw a restaurant charging ¥2000 per pax just for reservation only ...it cost just as much as their main meal 😅
Thank you for new information

hahaha!
👍
Chinese tourists huh... Money is good but I've heard of some of them being quite too much regardless of how much the money they could gain...~ Fastpass ... With everyone using it the line would still be a bit long and once full not like everyone would finish eating quickly either heh~
Japanese people hate foreign tourist, don't come to Japan ☹
Just came back from a trip end of 2024….and yeah….many places especially in Kyoto are overcrowded, you’re literally bunching up with people to lineup, and 90% of restaurants are either fully booked or not receiving customers. I’m all for Japan welcoming visitors, as I love the culture and food…but truthfully, Japan’s handling of overcrowding needs to be better managed. Japan simply doesn’t YET have all the enough resources to cater for the massive boom in tourism. Many places are either stuck with outdated systems or are simply just too cramped up to cater for influxes of 1000s of people passing through. It has been an eye opener though, my last few trips centred around the mega cities. Next time I get the chance, I’ll try exploring some of the quieter towns and more rural areas which are far more unique.
Thank you for sharing your real experience and opinion. Those are very helpful for other viewers. I hope you come back to Japan soon!
Well done. We love Japan!
I'm happy to hear that!!
I’m leaving Australia tomorrow to come to Japan from the 7th to the 24th of January can’t wait to have a look at all the anime stuff and the culture. I’m also a student learning photography so I’m also planning on bringing my camera

The summer heat and humidity is unbearable . Choose April- may or late September to early November .
I am a tourist coming from Canada in April 2025 do I need a visa for entry ?
If you are Canadian, you don't need visa.
I'm planning a trip for November. Should I get worried about the chinese tourism influx? last time I booked my hotel in May, is it still fine?
With the relaxation of visa restrictions for Chinese people, many Chinese people may visit, but I don't know for sure.
Would going in march from 4th till 19th be good since it will be before everyone goes on vacation?
Yes, it's a very good time.
Oky Im coming in golden week😹😹
I hope you have a wonderful time in Japan!

Actually, me too!haha
Is Tabata good area to stay for 2 days then moving to Shinjuku for another 4 days?
There are no famous tourist attractions near Tabata Station, but it is located on the Yamanote Line, a convenient train line in Tokyo, so it is in a very convenient location.
@@Toshi-Guide-from-Japan Thanls a lot Toshi!
You say in your video that there’s no room for central heating systems because homes are too small. Well, you mentioned Hokkaido has it and they have small homes too. So I’m sure they found a way to integrate it in. I live in the central, the Chubu area of Japan. It does get pretty cold, tho not as cool as the north part. I still think we need some kind of better heating system and of course proper insulation in homes. Sure it’s fine to have individual units for each room, but you need good insulation to keep the remaining heat from escaping so quickly!!!!! That’s my main concern here. I hate cold homes and I hate hot humid homes. So there are better ways. よろしく。
Thank you for sharing your real experience and opinion. Those are very helpful for other viewers and me to understand Japanese Culture. I appreciate it!
I noticed the practice of turning off the AC when you're not in a room. When I was in Okinawa in October I wondered why it was so hot in the air bnb. But this makes so much sense after I visited. Conserving energy is a big thing in Japan and I'm on board 150%. Even in our hotel room in Tokyo. Used out hotel key to power the room. When we removed the key, everything turned off which was a shock to me. Bur I love how Japan conserved energy and the world can learn a thing or two from Japan. On a separate note since I've returned home to the US. I learned I miss Japan! I can't wait to go back. I hope all is well Toshi. Thanks for bringing Japan into our homes! I can't wait to go back!
I thought it's always a practice of turning off the ac when not in the room? 😅. The turning off room power without key card thing probably in almost around the world for hotels that use similar system. Never been to one that use similar system didn't turn off automatically when you remove the card. Sometimes we bring some card to put in there so the power will keep running 😅
@jefri4176 not here where I live. We keep the air on 24/7 in the summer and heat is always on 24/7 in the winter
@@mnman131313 oh interesting. I have lived mostly in asia,SG,Malaysia,Indonesia and Hongkong,we practice turning off the Aircon whenever we leave the room/home unless you will come back like 1 hour later, otherwise it's wasting electricity 😅
@jefri4176 where I live we need the heat on all the time. It can get as cold as -34 celcius.
Thank you kindly for providing Polish subtitles and a great guide over the 100-yen shops.
I'm glad I could help you!
Thanks for the updates. I plan on visiting again in October 2026, staying on Kyushu. The price increase is not a problem to me, and if Japanese pay less for something, i don't mind. The online registration will be very helpful. But 60 million people is too much, especially if half of them don't stick to Japanese customs like no talking on trains, bowing, speaking the most important phrases in Japanese etc. That would Japanese people much more uncomfortable than necessary.
Thank you for sharing your itinerary and opinion. As you mentioned, I hope Japan will become a wonderful country not only for foreigners but also for Japanese people.
Hi Toshi, where should I stay for 6 days in Tokyo to get to all attractions you mentioned in this video? :)
Shinjuku is the best place to go, but there are other options. I've explained the details in my previous video, so please check it out if you're interested. ua-cam.com/video/TzjiGrXfgvM/v-deo.html
@@Toshi-Guide-from-Japan Thank you ❤️
I very agree with the thought of feeling the four seasons. I live in hot climate country which no much different for the seasons. I personally think that four seasons countries is very good to have those seasons to enjoy and it’s a great taught not to destroy the environments.
Thank you for sharing your opinion. Japan has four seasons, so the way you enjoy Japan will change depending on when you visit. I encourage you to visit Japan in all four seasons.
I chose the middle of February
Since it's the off-season, it will probably be less crowded than usual. However, it is cold in winter, so don't forget to bring a jacket.
Hi Toshi, if I only stay in Tokyo for 1 night to catch Shinkasen to Osaka the next day. Which location should you recommend?
I recommend near Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station, where the Shinkansen departs.
great guide, but why is there no mention about sakura season? thanks.
Thank you for your opinion. Yeah, the cherry blossom season is popular with foreign tourists.
Does JAPAN have CENTRAL WATER? Otherwise, pipes explode in very cold temps 🧊 Or do they have water storage containers? 💧
It depends on the house, but Japanese homes also have central water.
YAY! Our favorite tour guide posted!
Thank you for your friendly comment as usual!!!!
@@Toshi-Guide-from-Japan It's my pleasure. you spill the tea when it comes to anything Japan.
Tourist taxes... eesh. I thought Japan, like any country, would be glad of tourist spending..but taxing them for the honour... Japan is beautiful and diverse, a really gem, but prices are high already. Respect to you, thank you for the video.
Thank you for sharing your opinion! I hope Japan will be a good place for foreign tourists.
Face recognition is evil. Screw Japan.
Thank you for the video Toshi. How about purchasing Suica card at airport Narita or Haneda. Payment cashless?
I think that's a great idea for traveling in Japan.
You can add a Suica card on your phone wallet if you have an iPhone. Not sure about android! Makes it much easier than buying an actual card and you can just recharge straight on your phone!
@@TheScarletteWhisper I'm using Android phone. Going to Japan 2nd time for holiday in Dec 2025. I think there is a machine to purchase Suica card at airport. But at counter require cash payment no cashless though
"welcomed" to use the term loosely
It's good to see improvements in technology and digitalisation. Relying on tourism is a good short-term strategy but depending on over-tourism it already inflates prices of food, property and soon train tickets for the locals let alone doubling the tourism as many locals are already struggling. Also, cultural erosion, after all, cultural draw attracts foreigners therefore capping tourism and even reducing the rate now, amongst other issues. Diversification and primary focus to encourage the growth of other industries such as tech, education, or manufacturing. Investing heavily in technology can help address major issues, such as supporting the aging population and improving productivity. Retaining local talent, as many skilled workers are leaving instead of doubling tourism, could phase out eventually. The aim should be Sustainable Tourism, long-term viability over increasing an already over-tourism situation and that tourism benefits are distributed equitably among local communities. Over -tourism, won't revive the "bubble era" and make Japan great again, technology & innovation would contribute towards it like the previous bubble era with local tourism
Thank you for sharing the amazing your opinion!!! I appreciate it.

Does this effect the Osaka 2 day pass or 3 day pass for tourist too? If only wish to visit n stay in Osaka
Is this an increase in train fares? If so, this only applies to the Tokyo area, so does not apply to the Osaka area.
Mi scusi , ma lei e'una guida turistica ? Perche vorremmo vistare il Giappone , ma non con viaggio organizzato
Yes. I have a tour guide service. Please check out my website for more details. www.toshi-guide-trip.com/day-tour
Awesome, thank you for validating the choices I already made with no information. I booked from late april to late may. I will stay in Tokyo until just after the golden week and explore with Shinkansen other towns and the japanese countryside during may.
Thank you for sharing your itinerary. I hope you have a wonderful time in Japan.
i think Japan should not apply the taxes as tourism is the only way to help the Japanese economy. People are shipping in Japan as it’s tax -free. If there will be an increase in prices , especially on food, the will sacrifice on the quality which Japan is known for. They should be strict on implementing their rules in respecting their tradition. They can apply tourism yen on the number of room nights. I’m from the UAE and this is what they are doing to keep the economy better
Thank you for sharing your opinion! I hope Japan will be a good place for foreign tourists.
Is there any less visited area that you could recommend if I travel in last week of March?
Nagoya and Sendai are big cities, but I don't think many people visit them.
Even if EVERYTHING went up in price irregardless of the low yen-still cheap. Compared to Canada. Ex. McD’s Sausage egg McMuffin set just went up to ¥520 yen. What is that in US dollars-less than 4 bucks? In Canada, 5 years ago, it was $12!!!!!
I've been to Toronto, Canada, and I remember prices there being 2-3 times higher than in Japan. Japan is cheap, so please come and visit!
There is no global warming, first of all it was summer so temperature will be high than usual, second it was el nino year even 2023 was an el nino year where summer and humidity will be high and more than usual temperature. In 2025 its la nina year where temperature will be cooler or cold and summer will be having average temperatures or normal. So argument doesn't count much. Whatever you mentioned are el nino symptoms and effect
Making really hard for BiPOC people to visit. 😅
the plate is not 100Y but its 500Y
Instead of allowing more tourists, I wished Japan charged a large entry fee for tourists and required entry visa, especially for Americans and stricter visa requirements for Chinese. Quality over quantity.
Kairo are the carbon heat pads sold everywhere in western countries. They are air activated.
Thank you for sharing western country's info!! Winters in Western Europe are cold too.
