Damn, that tone when you cranked out And Justice for All was killer.
Edit: A killer breakdown, I’d picked up this method from lots of 80s thrash without realizing it.
Some other tallica songs that utilize that method to some extent. Ride the lightning (pre chorus is verse moved up a step), creeping death (pre chorus riff centers around F# while staying in Em), Blackened (one line in the verse is chugged on G instead of E), Disposable Heroes (pre chorus riff starts centered around Db, fifth of F#, before ending on B, fifth of E). Those are the ones I can immediately think of, I’m sure there’s more.
am i evil goes 7 half steps up and when it comes back down its crushing
Call of the ktulu has a great example of this. And they take it even farther in that one than in many others. There's a build up that occurs where they play a riff over and over again before busting back into the main riff. The second time they bust out that build up they only play part of it, cutting it off early each time and they keep stepping it up, a whole step at a time (there might be a half step in there somewhere, as they walk up the scale bit by bit... But I haven't played the song in years so I don't really remember). It goes on and on and on. Every couple measures it steps up again. I believe it happens like 4 times (the step up) after every 2 cycles through the riff (again, been years so I might be a bit inaccurate) and then it busts into that really heavy, slow breakdown section in the middle.
Edit: checked out the song cuz the details were bugging me lol. Listen to it and right around the 5:20 mark in the track, the buildup begins. It steps the riff up 4 times, each happening after 4 repeats. Just by a quick listen, I believe they first step up a whole step, then a half step, then a whole step again. I *believe* that's what's happening there. (again, loooong time since I played it. Maybe 10 years). But to your point, this method is plenty effective and super cool/easy to do. And you can keep building tension up and up and up and up by simply repeating this as you walk your way up whatever key you're playing in. As long as the riff is fairly simple, repetitive, and groovy, this should work every time 👍
Amazing sound output. Great lesson again
metallica's another powerful tool is James arpeggios along with the chords in relation to the tonal notes of the vocal area
Just noticed All nightmare long does the same thing apart from it goes from being in D and goes a full step up to E in the tremolo picked part. Very cool.
Never realised this. Super effective. Great breakdown. 🤘
Another great lesson. Thanks
Somehow I had a feeling this was the trick you were going to talk about. Probably due to the fact they use it so often haha. I need to know how you got that tone, it sounds great. Nice work as always dude🤘
Holy shit, that tone is perfect for Metallica!
Hell yeah dude, this is one of the top tricks. Pantera used it in the early days, Skids did it, Aerosmith did it and wasn't even heavy, and heavy ass Slayer does it! great breakdown dude.
Nice info on such trick, even I'm listening Metallica sice my school days in 1995 but never ever noticed such things... Great brother...🤘🏼
dude i was so taken away by your tone and playing that i forgotI have to learn something great vid btw
Dope!!!!!! Great stuff, man!!
I knew right away what it was going to be. At this point, the entire Metallica catalog is etched in my brain lol
Good riff :)
Love this! Thank you.’
Oh man and I thought that knowing mayor, minor and pentatonic was the solution for my ignorance !!! Once again back to the musical theory. Now I'm more confused than ever hahaha.
...And Justice For All is such and underrated album
Can you do Fade & FHT Bell Tolls
what other artists do this technique and what is its official name outside of Metallica songwriting?
Blackened is another
They step up the riff in one whole step which is what everyone is calling modulation. They favour em to f# or step up one step from the other examples. Is this correct??
Yes, usually Em to F# as everything they do is Em. Sometimes they'll move to F (God That Failed) for example.
@@axeofcreation Thank you my friend, the last few months of vids are intense, i will definitely be checking more of your stuff out thank you.
Creeping death it got some it in that most 50 percent of there song just so many still best metal band ever period
Everything that Metallica does is centered around the Enter Sandman riff. Such a shit band.
