I've heard this piece performed by about seven pianists, and to my ears Lang Lang's version is undoubtedly the best. His playing here is impeccable, and he made it 'fun' in a very musical way. Very engaging.
Paulino Contreras so glad to hear, I have always, thought his playing was impeccable, and he still is, though not so many concerts since his injury, understandable, he has the LLIMF in his lie too!
Listened to this growing up on a ripped-off DVD of his Carnegie Hall concert, instantly became one of my favourite pieces. Rediscovered this recently and am seeing this magic in a new light. His light sparkly touch is unparalleled.
this is a breathtaking performance. he is so unified with the piano as no other pianist I know. the flow is so natural. He is "auf der suche nach der blauen blume" . He is looking for beauty. he makes music not just notes.
This is a great performance. This is one of the works I'm doing at the time and I can tell you it is super super fun to play! Though I think Lang Lang exaggerates a bit too much when he plays with his expressions (not just here) though that usually doesn't harm his playing.
Lang Lang performs Abegg Variations with flawless precision. One can observe the impressive dynamism in his fingers that evoke an intense, graceful and delightful musical tones.
Could someone explain me what's wrong about Lang Lang? I mean, when I listened his renditions in 2015 he was considered one of the most virtuossist pianist on our days. But now I've noticed there are people who don't like him or something related with his playing so I would like to understand what happens with him and people who don't like his renditions
As with every great performer in the performing arts, once you're at the top, some people will simply not like you because you're there. Many people want Lang Lang to conform to their ideas of how the music should go and he simply doesn't. It is the very same reason that make him popular in the first place. But now, they don't want to accept him for him. That's all.
Lang Lang is used to not respecting the original work of composers. As you can heard, he play way too much with rubato, so there is no more continuous line. We have the feeling of hearing a fragmented work and not a coherent whole. For example, in this performance, he does split octaves til the double bar (the end) in the Thema, which is not on the sheet. His originality is too lacking because he plays with too much freedom. Some music critics see him as an impostor but still some others appreciate his approach. Personally I don't.
@@pjbpiano I just brought an element of answer to the question asked. Beyond the specific characteristics and singularity of each pianist, one must keep in mind the composer's indications on the score, otherwise what good are they? Lang Lang is too careless, the breaths are not coherent, there is too much rubato and the nuances are sometimes too marked and out of place. Put it all together and you have a tasteless performance. Sorry to disappoint you, but in classical music, there are certain rules to respect like the interpretation indications on the score. Geniuses like Sokolov or Gould manage to break away from them completely and bring novelty and originality to the works. Other pianists also manage to reveal their personalities with finesse and lucidity, while Lang Lang is unrestrained, grotesque and unsightly. He is too much of a fantasist and leaves very little room for the homogeneity of the work. Contrary to what you imply, there are always things to be rediscovered in works that have been replayed many times (even if you respect the indications of the score). It takes time and a lot of listening to distinguish the subtlety of each performer because the piano is an instrument infinitely rich in sound possibilities.
Amazing performance. Complete mastership. But why is he repeating the first part in the first variation? Schumann consciously makes it 16 bars long without repetition and the second 8 whereas he repeats the second half. Makes perfectly sense regarding the structure of the subject. But he plays it as if the first half the subject is twice as long.
Роберт шуман влюбился в девушку..ее фамилия была Абегг .. ноты кроме привычных названий имеют буквенные обозначения cdefgah Он написал музыку ее фамилией.. Эти чистая правда .
I think Lang Lang is a genius, when he plays it's like he's painting on a canvas, the canvas is blank and by the end a master piece was painted ❤❤❤❤

Say whatever you want about Lang Lang (I'm not a fan of some of his interpretations myself) but this was impeccable playing.

Наверно Ланг Ланг лучший пианист современности. Мне кажется он играет именно так как задумал автор.. Или максимально приближённо.
the guy is looking at his hands like someone else is playing and he's amazed at it
Yup
haha, he is amazed at his own performance
He owns this...Maybe the best version of this beautiful and charming work.

He makes this piece sound effortless, where most pianists are trying to grab all the notes.
True
Probably the best performance of this incredible Masterpiece!!

A great musical history lesson, how Schubert leaves romantic themes that influences Schumann, yet in another romantic style.

@@alexrrd5512, if everyone followed the score, you will not need to hear more renditions of the same piece.
