Hi Rob! You picking up the flat black rocks brought back a memory! My ex and I went to Lake Superior for our honeymoon. I picked up enough of those to line the edge of the short walkway to our apartment at the back of his parents' home. My son inherited the house, and last time I was there to visit him, those rocks were still there!
Those are really cool rocks even if they're plain. It's amazing how consistently oval and flat they are.
Watching them throw good rocks back in: "No! Wait! I'll take that one!"

I coined a new phrase when I was in Michigan 2 weeks ago... "nagate". It's what you say when you pick up a rock and realize it's not an agate! (You throw it over your shoulder and shout nagate!) I can't believe you dropped that piece of unakite near the beginning of the video!
I find so much unakite, I force myself to leave most of it behind. I think I brought home two small pieces that day from both beaches combined.

I don't have a big Agate to use to break it in, can I just use a field rock to break it in? I enjoy all of your videos thanks.
@@kayakfisherman1961 I don't think it matters as long as it's a hard rock. You want something without jagged edges too. A big piece of quartz or quartzite would probably work well.

Hi Rob! A new idea for a video is to kayak out to Middle Island this summer to do some beach rock exploration. This is a video nobody has done yet that would be extremely interesting and fun to see!

No question; agate. It amazes me how this remains a question and how many hope for agates when they aren't.
To clarify, translucent with bands. This is our generally accepted human construct and definition.
The color was making me question it a little. But then again those eastern U.P. agates come in just about any color.
Very cool finds Rob we will be out there in May any advice would be great thank you for all you do on your channel
My advice would be to bring someone with good eyes. My neighbor Sam is young and out hunts me almost every time. Otherwise, just have fun and pick up what you like.

I just got back from my own rock hunt along Dallas rd in Victoria BC. I picked up some nice stones for the tumbler. Picked up many more that were pretty but didn't make the cut. It was a lovely way to spent the afternoon.
It's always nice to get outside whether you find anything or not.

My wife and I went up to Little Girls Point on the Western shore of Lake Superior. We found plenty of agates and banded iron. You guys did 👍 great also.
I went there early last spring and didn't find any agates, but the banded iron was the best I have ever seen.

Yup, definitely an agate. Seems like most rocks that have stripes are cool whether they're agates or not. Nice engraving!
But agate stripes are the best stripes.

I love the mystery rocks. Really nice agate finds. I can't wait to be able to get up there again. I did go to Spurgeon Point Light House a few days ago. I had a blast. Found a few perty rocks.

I agree. At first, the color just threw me off. There's a lot of quartz that is the same color.

How you cannot keep some of those beautiful rocks you find just hurts me!!!!! My visit up north gave me not very good weather, therefore, I skipped going to the lake. ☹️ Oh well, there is always another time!!! You guys sure looked like you were having a great time!!! I LOVE your red jeep, I'm assuming! Whatever it is, I love that color of red!!! I was excited seeing you pick up a bunch of those flat black rocks!! I have some flat rocks form Lake Superior,and plan on painting with the grandsons! But, with sports going again, we will probably be waiting for this Summer to paint them. I am still finishing up the last few rocks from last summer, so I didn't think I deserved many new ones. I only brought back about four or five rocks for the tumbler.
My vehicle is a red Jeep. It's a lot of fun when I get to places like that and just plow on through.

I hope so too. I was in his area last spring, but his wife had a baby about two days after I was there. He didn't think that was a good time to be away from her, and I think that was the right call.
I love the laser engraving. I use paint markers on flat Lake Ontario stones similarly.

No, I don't do stuff like that very often. There's a lot of quartz on the beach and that one was not very distinct. Plus it was very light colored. I was definitely leaning toward agate.
Everything you pick up is beautiful….and then you toss it. Aaaargh.

Sure looks like an agate with bands at the top, quartz in the middle, and water level at the bottom. Am I seeing a hint of purple in the middle of the quartz or is it my imagination?
Sam thought he saw some purple too. It's very subtle, but I think there might be a tiny amount of amethyst in there.

I don't know. Sometimes quartz or quartzite can look similar and have some very slight banding. the banding contrast was low enough on this one to make me question it at first. I decided it was one after further examination.

I do too. I also like green rocks. Pink rocks are also fun. Actually, Petoskey Stones are gray and I love those. I think maybe I just like rocks, no adjectives necessary.

I think so, in your close up photo there is some slight banding in the bottom right, and that clear core is definitely chalcedony, I would probably bet there is some banding inside

Big fan! You've always helped out when I had questions and I'm hoping you'll have the time to answer this one.... My wife and I are enthusiatic amateurs and are following the basic stage 1, 2, 3 and 4. Our polish is a 1,200 (not high, I know) but we're experimenting with using both tumblers and our 'Mini-Sonic'. If you can direct us where to find 'definitive' info on the polish phase (4). How much polish? How much water? The amount of days to tumble? The differences in the grit and water amounts with rotary vs vibro? Maybe you've already done a video on exactly these topics??? I've searched but haven't found one yet. Any help you can be would be very much appreciated! Rock on!
I'll help you out the best I can. I don't have a Mini Sonic. I do have a friend who is very good at tumbling who has several Lot-O tumblers (that's what I have) and also a Mini-Sonic. He tells me that in his Mini Sonic, he has to use twice as much grit and run them for twice as long to get the same results as in the Lot-O. Hey Carl, a friend of mine designed that and asked me not to share the plans. I have answered some basic questions in the comments. You might notice some contradictions, because I changed the pulley on the motor to speed the whole thing up a bit a couple years ago.

Rob have you heard of Sudbury Impact and Thunder Bay etc.? I just saw a short video on it and wondered if you ever find any pieces..... The meteorite was about 200 miles wide or something like that, 20 miles deep?
I have heard of it. There was a woman who lived near me who was always looking for it and actually found some. She sent it to someone else I knew who took it to a geology professor she knew who made some thin slabs to look at in a microscope and verified that it was actually impactite. So fragments of that made it all the way to the Alpena area.

granite doesn't tumble well because you use a vibratory tumbler
certain softer stones have a problem with a vibratory tumbler
You've had better luck with a rotary tumbler? I usually have better or at least more consistent luck with my vibe than the rotary.
What are the blue rocks that I see in the early part of the video?
They were probably black, not blue. I think some of those are graywacke. Some might be basalt. That's just my uneducated guess though.

I think you're talking about the word "cab". It's short for "cabochon". Cabochons are rocks that have been shaped and polished. They're usually flat on the back and domed on the front. They're used to make jewelry such as pendants. A cab machine is a grinder that has several wheels (mine has six) that go from coarse to finer grits. It's used to shape and polish cabochons.

I was thinking it looked more like a breccia. My geologist son in law is sitting here with me and thought it looked like it was on the border between breccia and conglomerate since the clasts are somewhat angular and somewhat rounded. He was leaning toward breccia.

I love walking along and look for nice rocks, this is probably the nearest I will come rockhounding. I hope when I move that there will be better beaches (with pebbles) then it is where I live now, here is sand. One small beach have pebbles, but it is VERY dangerous to get there and there is not any gemstones either. That was nice, that bird done with laser on the flat rounded stone. Thank`s so much for the tour.
I think sandy beaches are overrated. However, if that's all you have, you might consider buying a magnifying glass or a microscope and remembering that sand is just really, really small rocks.
