- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

Loved that beach, and right up the road at the Lake View cemetery, my great and great-great grandparents are buried. It was a great experience to see some old old family like that, so close to a lovely beach.
I think I know which cemetery you're talking about.
2 railroad TRACKS makes me think miners old 🚢 😊
Oh well always maybe agates gonna pop up.
❤️ the water sounds.
Whoa..that hunt went from good to awesome there at the end. 😮😊 What a beauty! 😍😍😍
I was starting to think I wouldn't find an agate. It was a nice surprise when I did!
Awesome finds, great video!
Your videos always inspire me and my daughter to go rock hunting for tumbling material together. And for that, I can't thank you enough
That's a good way to spend time with your family or friends. I'm glad I'm encouraging you to get out. I hope you find some good ones!
Thanks for taking us along again Rob! Truly an amazing agate find!
I really liked that one. You could probably tell that though.
As always, great walk on beach! Thanks the journey and all the wonderful rocks, stripes and greens are my favorites!!
If you like green, you should have loved this video!
Rough day at the house, looking like the back issues will keep me out of the rocks this weekend. Bummed about it, that is until I watched the new production! Great beach, picked over or not, still lots of beautiful and interesting stones to look at. Thanks for sharing, extra points for cheering me up! Very appreciated.
I have back problems sometimes too. It's not fun. Hang in there.
I believe Calumet Waterworks Park is the former site of waterworks for one of the local copper mines (likely C & H). I would speculate the old tracks are related to the mining days.
That makes a lot of sense. I don't know the history of that area, so I was just sort of confused.
It "is" the site where some of us get our water. The intake is a ways offshore. Pumping station on the shore at the north end of the park.
Hi ! That’s a beauty! Lake Superior Agate!
That awesome rock you found at 4:05 looks almost exactly like mint chocolate chip ice cream with whipped cream on top. That agate you found at the end is super incredible! The colors are absolutely amazing! It was nice to see some green rocks mixed in with all those red ones.😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That one really does look like mint chocolate chip ice cream with whipped cream. I like that one almost as much as the agate. I did get a tad more excited about the agate though.
@@MichiganRocks It's very hard to pick a favorite, but i think the mint chocolate chip rock is my favorite. 😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I was so happy for you when you got that agate. Reminds me that I oughta go outside more and explore :)
I was pretty happy too!
Hi - They used to use railroad tracks to launch small motor and row boats. Someone may have had a boat house where you saw the tracks. They had a cart that rolled on the tracks. The boat sat on the cart as it was moved into the water. This method is still in use.
Best, Dave
Yes, I have seen that on inland lakes in the lower peninsula. The ones I have seen were smaller than railroad tracks, though. There was no boathouse currently in the vicinity of these tracks, though. It's possible that there was one there years ago and only the tracks are left, I suppose.
Before Puget Sound was so developed, there were many DIY set ups built by cabin owners. They used what was available, including just pipes.
It’s just a possibility that’s what you saw.
Wow nice LSA. That is awesome. So beautiful. Lots of beautiful rocks. That's a really nice beach there.
People love this beach and I see why. That agate is really great.
Maybe next year I can make it out rockhounding again. I have missed going so much.
@@donnalantz7981 I hope so!
Me too. Getting the nerves burnt in my low back next month. That should allow me to be able to stand and walk again. At least I hope so.
The last couple you found were awesome!
Yep, I was pretty darn happy with those.
I had to look up the omarolluk rock. That big green one was nice. Love your videos.
Thanks for sharing.
I didn't say too much about the Omar, because I have mentioned them on here so often. I struggle with deciding how much to repeat myself. I don't want to bore my regular viewers, but there are always new people too.
That was a really good hunt! The good agate had really fine bands and nice deep color. It also looks like it doesn’t have many fractures. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to go rockhounding while we were in Wisconsin, so it’ll have to wait
Yeah, that agate was great. No quartz either. I don't hate quartz in my agates, but I like the agate part a lot more than the quartz part.
Well done! Looks like a fun hunt
Orange spot looks like a medieval lion!
Great finds.
I would really love to see these polished. I'm not sure about the mint chip rock. It might get some under-cutting with the copper in it but maybe you could chisel them out? Also, the sound of the water is very relaxing.
I'm not sure what to do with the mint chip rock. I haven't tumbled prehnite before as far as I can remember. I might try some of the more plain stuff first and see how it goes. I might just try this on my cab machine instead.
Sounds like an experiment is going to happen.
@@greatnorthernviews3052 It's fun to try new things in this hobby.
I would leave those beautiful little chunks in it and keep it as a specimen!
The “mint chip” is prehnite with copper. It can polish up but i prefer then unpolished.
Wow! Your LSA was gorgeous! And all the other agates you picked up, but your LSA was definitely an agate and boy oh boy, was it gorgeous. Great hunt, a nice relaxing day, and a bunch of prehnite. Very pretty rocks! Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, there was no wondering or looking through a loupe with that one. I didn't film actually picking it up because my hand shot out before I could think about turning on the camera.
The best agates I found this season were on the roof of an industrial building. Who knew! Wading in the water would be a more enjoyable way to find agates.
If you can't be on a beach and you have to be on a roof, then you pick where you can. It's fun to find an agate wherever you find it!
That is sooo cool
I’ve heard of the Underground Railroad but never the underwater railroad.
Ha ha! Me either.
Have you ever tried tumbling rocks, with different hardnesses, without abrasives? VERY nice video too!
I did a video on tumbling rocks using sand as an abrasive. I did a barrel with sand, one with silicon carbide grit, and one with nothing but rocks and water. The barrel with no abrasive of any kind actually got pretty shiny. Other than that, I haven't tumbled rocks with no abrasive in the barrel. ua-cam.com/video/rk1DEqyH8Pc/v-deo.html
And I did watch that video, very interesting. I think you’re missing the boat here, those chips in the wire strainer could be “ Michigan Rocks custom aquarium gravel.” 😎
Nice specimens !!! Back in 1972 I was working for a landscape company in Richland Michigan, and we received a load of landscaping stone for the local K-Mart stores, and I spotted an 3" oval Petoskey stone. Took it home and hand sanded and polished it. I lost all of my life time rock collection back in 2008 during the stock market crash. Since I have started all over again. Thank You for reading and replying to my comments. Love most all of the videos that you put on UA-cam.
I'm glad you're getting a start on replenishing your rock supply. Collecting them is at least half the fun.
That little orange spot looks like a little tiger
I guess it does a bit.
You missed a green agate
Darn.
Those tracks are probably an old boat launch
That makes sense. I have seen those on inland lakes around where I live.
Wow! That agate if top notch! Are you going to cut it into cabochons?
I usually just keep my agates the way I found them. That one is pretty small to make cabs out of anyway.
What kind of container can I use for a barrel?maybe plastic mayo or pickle jar?
I'd suggest just buying a commercial tumbling barrel. They last a very long time and are much more quiet than anything homemade. A plastic jar won't last long at all. Most homemade barrels are made from PVC pipe if you decide to go that way. They're pretty loud from what I've read.
A little off topic, but thought you’d be the right person to ask. I happen to be visiting family near South Haven, MI right now. Any recommendations for good rock hunting places nearby in Lake Michigan? Especially with petoskey stones?
That's an area of the state I'm not all that familiar with. The only place I have hunted near there is Pilgrim Haven Natural Area. Nancy and I went there and had a lot of fun looking for lightning stones. I'm not sure how common Petoskey Stones are in that part of the state. I think they're mainly found north of where you are. Here's the video from Pilgrim Haven:
ua-cam.com/video/AMO69Z0Ljdw/v-deo.html
I pick there regularly. I found a really nice large beauty there. When were you there? I live close by
I was there on August 14. As a local, do you find this beach as good as any other?
@@MichiganRocks I routinely find a few agates each time I go there.. best place I know of
@@judymoilanen3988 I'll be back again. I liked it.
I found a few nice ones there today. The water was pretty rough, so not really my kind of picking. But all the nice ones I found today were in the water
@@judymoilanen3988 I prefer calm water too, but brought water can be exciting too. I'm almost always making a video when I'm out hunting, so I have to worry about the wind messing up the sound. That's the worst thing about wind for me.
Beautiful agate find!🤩 Can you please recommend a good UV? I was thinking Convoy C8(?) And is Unakite only found in MI?
Unakite is found in a lot of places. I have a Convoy S2. I like it. I have heard that the C8 is better because it is brighter. I think there are other good ones, but I haven't tried them so I can't really recommend them.
What is written on your shirt? Waits on Rocks?
Wait, I see a rock. It was a gift from my younger sister.
@@MichiganRocks That's a very nice gift. Tell her to get you a shirt that says "My Rock!" the next time your birthday rolls around.
Beautiful agate! Really like the copper spot rock with prehnite. You didn't do to bad with a picked over beach.
I was thrilled with how I did.
This type of video is my favorite! I feel like I'm right there with you rockhounding 😊 Super cool stuff thanks.
Maravilhoso
Wow! Beautiful agate! Well done! Suzy
WOW ! You have found the most gorgeous agate ever my friend the colours are stunning ! I so love it 🤩😍 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
That one was great for the colors and the bands. I was pretty excited.
Wow!! That Agate is stunning.
Lots of other really pretty stones.
The Brecciated stone was neat,
I have sliced some done up for the tumbler.
This day started out a little slow, but finished strong. I was super happy with my finds.
I was there just this passed weekend. Northern lights were absolutely spectacular! Go huskies!
I have never seen the northern lights. Lucky you!
Thanks for sharing another excellent video. I found a reallly cool stripy rock with a face cut into it at that park last year! It gets very busy with yooperlite hunter at night time. I’m never sure about how far I can walk on the beach. Can you walk the shoreline past private residences in Michigan? Or do the property lines to the water? Also, I remember in your earlier videos you would do a round up of everything you were taking home. I know you throw a lot of rocks you find back, but it would be cool to see the rocks you deemed good enough to take home, at the end of the video.
Keep up the awesome work Rob! I hope you still love making videos, because we still love watching them!
Hey Benji. On Great Lakes beaches (not inland lakes), the beach is considered state land. You can walk up to the ordinary high water mark. So you can walk beaches in front of private property. I have only had people try to stop me twice. Most people are very nice about you walking in front of their house. I wouldn't stop for a picnic, and I'm quiet and try to be respectful of people's privacy.
For UA-cam videos to do well, one thing that's important is to keep people's attention until the very end of the video. That's hard to do. I have found that with my "Rocks in a Box" videos, showing a slide show at the end is a really bad idea. I did it for a long time and the views drop off drastically as soon as the slide show starts. Anytime I make any sort of comment that signals the end of the video has arrived, people stop watching. By stopping at the end to show what I'm bringing home, I think I would lose people in the same way. That will impact how many views the video gets. After all the work I put into a video, I'd like it to be seen by as many people as possible. I really appreciate the suggestion though. I need people to tell me what they like, what they don't like or make suggestions for future videos. I don't always listen very well, but I have put thought into this one quite a bit.
That stinks that people stop watching. I always watch the entire video and all the ads to help support the people that worked so hard to make a video.
Thanks for the reminder about shoreline law. And of course, I’m always respectful and mindful when hounding! Thanks again for always making great content!
Very relaxing to listen to the waves and look for beutiful rocks. You are good at showing us the rocks you find. Much to watch😊
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos, Inger. You've been watching for a long time, thanks!
Great finds !✨
Nice finds . 🙂
Thanks for sharing Rob, those railway tracks into the water may be a boat launch, at once stage there may have been a shed up on the banks.
Could be. I have seen those in other places. There was no sign of a boat house there anymore though.
Really cool!!
Nice!
really amazing, you found a nice agate.
“I win!” Love it and your laughter. Thanks for taking the time to share your rockhounding!
I was sort of excited.
See, I told you that was a good beach!!! 😁
You did! My sister wasn't as excited about it. I think she should give it another try.
Gorgeous finds there 💕💞♥️💜💙🧡
Edge of water revealing smaller, but what U wanted 👍 plus more.
Nice grey day calm water sounds.
💋😘 🏆 📹
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: Very nice rock hunt! Thank you for the trip.😊
That is so truly awesome. I hope you show us what it looks like when you get it tumbled!! Totally a magnificent color.
If you're talking about the agate, I don't tumble those. They're not huge and I'd hate to make them smaller. I also really like them just the way they are.
I was just at that beach and found some agates and a lot of prenite Also lots of green rocks you are not kidding about a lot of red rock there nice find with the yooper rock day time! Good eye.
I don't know what I was expecting. I have had some people tell me that they weren't that excited about that beach because it's so popular. Then again, it's probably popular for a reason. I was very happy with my finds.
@@MichiganRocks the time we went there was big waves that washed a bunch of new rocks. It’s always nice to go after a strong north wind.
@@greatnorthernviews3052 Yep, a good storm really mixes things up.
Very cool lots of nice rocks and some very nice agate. Thanks for sharing the video Rob, nice hunt.
You found some pretty awesome rocks. Loved them all. I really enjoyed your video.
14:15 I see some bands in the white as well, I’d call that one an agate
I agree!
That's the only place I saw bands. There were none in the darker part. I think it might be an agate, but not a great one. The orange one, on the other hand, was great.
Hey Rob, just wanted to pop in to say how much my friend loved, loved, loved her pudding stone charm. I finally got back to sarnia to pick them up. I got the Petosky heart and we're over the moon excited to own them. Beautiful work. They just may not come off our necks. Thank you. 💐
I'm really glad you liked them! That's fun to hear. Thanks for buying them from me.
More great finds ! Another great place to chech out. Cheers from the 920 of wis.
Love the close-up pics of the rocks. Just gorgeous. Love that Yooperlite.
This is beautiful 👌Meanstoanend
That's a beautiful spot.
Jestem zachwycona bo wreszcie rozumiem co Pan mówi, bardzo dziękuję za tłumaczenie, szum morza i te urocze minerały super filmik
Proszę bardzo!
Just what I needed!
Congratulations
If that beach is popular, and has been for a long time, then I wonder if the tracks were for a beach 'changing hut' or other structure that would be pushed into the water so that someone could bathe in complete privacy. Some asylums and spas also had cold-water treatments where severely ill people were wheeled into the water as therapy.
Edit - I forgot to mention that they could have also just been industrial and/or to (un)load boats.
That never occurred to me. I have never heard of such a thing. I should have turned around to show that the tracks weren't visible on the beach, only in the water.
Holy smokes! What a find
Very nice finds over there! Love that agate you found near the end...good job finding a nice agate on a well picked beach!
I know it's a really popular beach, so I walked a long way to get away from the crowds. That one I found was pretty awesome.
That one looks like pink n green prehnite
Is a yooperlite a fallen star
Any day hunting rocks is a great day!
Well THAT was worth the trip! That LSA is just superb! Such a classic piece. Love it! I can't wait to get up there week after next!
Good luck up there!
Teşekkürler.
Another great video Sir. I enjoyed the theme of the video...... you know........Go Green! lol Cheers
You know, I think I'd really like blue rocks too. In fact, I know I would. Today I drove three hours to Leland, just to look for Leland BLUE. I do have to admit that I have a green problem though.
I love your videos!! And you have taught me a lot! I love how picky you are. I have been collecting rocks since I was a little girl. I grew up in Massachusetts and now I am living in Michigan. I am 100% a beach girl. I will be honest, I keep the rocks that look cool. I take them home and throw them in my tumbler and see what happens!
I always look forward to your videos! God Bless!
I do the same, tumble the ones that look cool. I have found that I have a a limited capacity for tumbling, which is why I'm so picky.
Amazing finds! We love rock collecting! It has been a rough year physically for us so no trips to THE UP....we hope soon. We miss lake superior
I'm sorry you couldn't get up to the U.P. this year. I hope you're doing better soon.
Take a pocket knife with you on hunts. The blade is hardness 5. Quartz runs from 6 to 6.5 hardness. It helps you identify whether it's cuttable material or in identification of the material. A scratch is an actual groove in the material. A knife blade won't be able to scratch quartz. You'd see flecks of the steel coming off your knife in the rock.
I carry a knife with me, but I don't take the time to scratch rocks on the beach. Most things I bring home tumble fine. I've tried enough things that I have a pretty good idea of what will tumble well and what won't. You're right though that a knife is a great way to test hardness if you want to do that.
Hello Rob,
Visiting your home town for a couple days. Long time follower! Would you recommend a beach to walk for some rock hunting.
Thanks
Rockport is a great place. There's the old quarry, the beach (I'd walk north for a couple miles if you can), and sinkholes behind the quarry. It's a fun place. Partridge Point is also great for fossils.
Nice finds! That rock at 2:32 with all the orange looked like a big cat/leopard on it. My best friend was just at Calumet Waterworks yesterday with her family, swimming and rock hunting. Hope she was able to find some great rocks too. Thanks for sharing Rob.
It's a great beach. I've read that a lot on the Internet, and I can now confirm it.
Wow the water is so calm. I went here over Labor Day weekend and my friend found a nice big chunk of an agate. I've been watching your vids for a while and you inspired my first trip to the UP so I especially enjoyed seeing you go someplace I've been too. Those horn coral fossils are easy to find with a 365nm light at night. They're the brightest rocks on the beach besides the yooperish ones. How long do you generally spend looking on any beach? It was a lot more difficult than I was expecting, felt like I was out all day with very few finds.
I'd say that for most of my videos I'm out between 3-6 hours. I compress all that down to 15-20 minutes and it looks better than it really is. I don't do that to be misleading, just to not have it be really boring. I just spent about five hours on a beach with Nancy today.
Congrats on that Agate Rob, stunning. And we’ll done on setting those stranded rocks free, how cruel to leave them up there to get all dry and weathered. Some people….😂😂😂😂
They looked parched.
What an incredible agate!! ... I especially like the rock at 4:30! Seems rather unique and interesting.
That rock at 4:30 is my second favorite, but it's a strong second.
Love your channel! Wife and I (both retired geologists) are on a driving tour through the UP and are hitting some of your spots. Found some interesting stuff at the Calumet Waterworks park the other day. Today we were at Vermillion point and found a few agates. Tomorrow we are hitting the Petoskey area then over to Rockport and Partridge Point park on the eastern shore.
Sounds like you're doing a lot of driving. I'd offer to meet up with you at Partridge Point, but I won't be there when you're there.
Hey rob wow that agate is great.can’t wait to see what it looks like after u polish it up.can’t believe all the unusual rocks on this little beach/water park today.love to do what u do one day.I live five mins from the beach and I only find shells and bits of coral on our beaches.thanks for the great videos.Melissa from Australia 🇦🇺
The only coral I find is 360,000,000 year old fossilized coral. There is no modern coral in the Great Lakes. We do have a few shells, but nothing pretty like ocean shells. I'm not complaining at all though, because I'll take cool rocks over shells any day.
More great finds. 3 agates. Congrats! You did better than we did at the water works. Walking down the beach paid off!
I walk a lot and put in a lot of time to find what I find. I don't remember for sure, but I think I was probably here for about four hours and walked a mile and a half one way. It's not like that's a problem though, I enjoyed every minute! There were a few minutes on the way back that I enjoyed more though!
Just imagine finding the big boy that piece was part of 😲amazing find
I try not to think about the part that got away.
We were just there but did not have time to do any rocking. Thanks for the video. Do you ever find any Red Jasper in the U.P.?
Yes, I do find some jasper.
One of our favorite beaches. So many people though. We always leave with some pretties!
I prefer beaches with fewer people just because they're less picked over. I did great here though, so I have no complaints.
12:04, really great pattern on that one. I probably would have brought home all the prenite 😄 So excited for you when you found that agate😁
I brought home more prehnite than anything else on that beach, I think. I haven't tumbled much of that, if any. I want to try some.
why is it when you are by yourself that you find the most amazing agate? Sort of like the owner with the talking dog, and there is no one around when he talks.. What a wonderful find. hope you let us see it after you tumble it.
I found a pretty nice one on Great Sand Bay on this same trip with lots of other people around. I was with Sam when I found he four pounder and Nancy when I found the 14 ounce one this spring. I'd say that it's more likely that I'm with someone when I find really good agates.
Aww I always pick here! I also have the best of luck picking here.
This is the only time I have ever picked here, but I'd like to go back next time I'm in the area. Good beach.
Wow,really nice rocks.im kind of happy i dont live there, coz little by little i would move all the pretty rocks to my house😁
Yes, I can see where that would be a problem. I have learned to control myself fairly well.
That bright orange bit on that one rock looks like a stone age cave painting, maybe of a lion or something
Yeah it does look sort of like that.
Agate Dad said "corn horal" now I can't unhear it anymore. Even when you say it the right way 😂
I heard him say that too and it pops into my head quite often. Darn that Agate Dad!
Awesome finds!
At 2:27 rock dark gray with orange-red, looks like a cave wall-painting of a leaping tiger 🐅.
A lot of people saw pictures in that rock. I don't tend to see pictures in rocks very often. I guess I need to look for them more.
You won!!! Awesome find, I was getting a little worried on the walk out but you turned it around!
I was a little worried too. I have learned to give the walk home as much of a chance as the walk out.
Guessing the tracks were for launching lifeboats?
That's a good guess. I have no idea though.
