    - KINGSLEY NORTH -
    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

    I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

    So I have ALWAYS loved rocks and recently my dearest friend, who also shared my seemingly mundane hobby of collecting neat rocks, passed away. I think part of my grieving process has been getting back into my love for rocks, and that lead me to your channel. Just wanted to show you some love and thank you for all the information and tips you’ve shared (I just started tumbling again, which I did in my youth); your vids have brought me a lot of smiles and comfort while I deal with everything, as well as some great education and knowledge! Looking forwards to seeing more, and if I’m ever in your area I’d love to go on a joint rock hunt! Stay blessed and rock on!

You and your wonderful wife have inspired me to do some rock hunting and I talked my two sisters and one brother-in-law into doing it with me. We’ve got our gear and are headed your way later this month. Any first timer tips for a Californian from the San Francisco Bay Area? Do you have a rock shop we could visit while in your neck of the woods? I work for a couple hospitals out here and am looking forward to my spring break. I have never made an egg. Sphere machines are something you could find information on with a Google search, but eggs are more difficult to make. I have never made either.

    I'm heading that way in the middle of May and was wondering if there is somewhere reasonable to park just south of where the river drains into the lake.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 місяці тому

      There's a place that's called Perry's Landing, although it's not marked that way. It's very close to the Lake Superior State Forest Campground. There's also a big parking lot at Vermillion Point. The spot I parked isn't too bad either. If you have a car with reasonable clearance (not a Corvette) you should be fine going down the road. It's not marked, but just look for the road that's closest to the mouth of the river. It has a pretty wide entrance, but is basically a two-track.

      The roads there were fine. The road to Vermillion Point where we went later that day were not fine at all. I was a bit concerned in four wheel drive in my Jeep. I wished I had a snorkel for it, but managed to get through. You can see that next week.

    HI Rob. can you recommend a Dremel bit that is good for hanging pendant etc? I got some junk from Amazon and they skip all over and then the coating wears off fast. love your channel, you got me into the hobby! cheers.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 місяці тому +1

      I don't use a Dremel much at all. I use one in the drill press attachment for drilling 1 mm holes. I have another that I use for buffing Petoskey stones with Zam and for roughing up polished surfaces that I intend to glue together. That's about it. I really wouldn't have enough experience with anything else to know what to recommend.

      There are arrowheads found in Michigan, but I haven't found any. I think the beaches would beat them up and round them off, so it's probably not the best place to look.

    11:36 That yellow one after the magnetite... I personally call it "sunstone" and the white ones like that "moonstone" but have no idea if that's correct. What is it?

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 місяці тому +1

      I used to call it quartz, but Dr. Nat and Capt. Paul (geologists who have been in a few of my videos), say it's quartzite. I have slabbed a few of those and they're always white on the inside. I think it's iron staining that turns them yellow.
