Oh my goodness Chris. I’ve been banging on about this for years. I play music, coach athletics and train people from all walks of life. The Golf industry is guilty of always putting the cart before the horse. Skill is the top of the tree. All these little tips and tricks are nuances in skill acquisition. The central issue people have in Golf is the lack of skill. Skill, practice and progression is nothing new yet the Golf industry feel they are unique. In athletics we develop skills through a hierarchy. In music, we have grades. Yet in golf, I see the opposite. I’m currently giving this info to golf pros who struggle with this and the question I ask them is, “what is the equivalent of scales in golf?” Scales develop skill and fine motor control which enable you to play harder pieces. Yet golfers expect to perform or improve with next to no skill training. Well done for this video. It will help so many people if they let it.
Great concept, and perfectly demonstrated. Thank you. People can suck at golf and still have fun, but they can't score low without a good set of skills (and even then you still have to have the mental game).
Thank you for this video! The idea of skill development is woefully underrepresented. Your chipping example was a light bulb going off! No more unreasonable reliance on perfect technique, I won’t live that long. But I can practice skill development🎉Thanks again.
Aye, this is a great vid. Skill is what is missing from most of the high handicappers game. I learned the old "Rule of 12" for chipping - got it from the great Bob Toski, I think. Today's golfers are too focussed on distance only.
Thank you Chris. I have never understood the function of the right hand in golf. I always have been taught that this is a left hand game and that is why the glove is on the left hand.
That was a great video. Most people on UA-cam won’t talk about their skill. I think because they don’t wanna put viewers down but its the truth, PGA pros are way more skilled than recreational golfers. We can’t do what u guys can do.
Very true, it can be trained though and developed, the great thing too is that it can allow you to play with very little swing thoughts Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Awesome video Chris, well done! Rather than the spray you can use packaging tape to give the same effect. Also my skill level is… ok for a hacker on 9 but my putting at 1mtr from the hole on the course - not on the practice green - really let’s me down. So building a skill that I know I have from practice is difficult, because of some mental blockage! Work in progress! I’ve watched you for years and think that you’ve got better and better and thank you for the impact you’ve have made on my game! We wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and safe NY from down here in NZ.
Wow thanks so much, really appreciate the comments, means a lot. Yeah I’d say developing skill for putting is a little trickier as the execution it pretty much the same every time other than distance, but certainly some at home practice would help to build the stroke and confidence
For those of us who struggle hitting the driver consistently in general (12+ handicappers), I’d definitely suggest using your driver you don’t intend playing with anymore- nothing like putting an idiot mark on a new driver, lol Great drills- I share with my daughter who’s taken up the game
@ChrisRyanGolf I'm older , retired but still don't have much time as anticipated.....I'll play a tournament once twice a month but my body doesn't allow me to chip or hit balls for more than half hour .....ugh
Just my preference I guess and I tend to find that most have more awareness this way, but absolutely no reason why it can’t be done focusing on the lead hand if that feels more natural
Instead of trying to time the moment of impact at open or closed face Why don’t you start your setup with your club face open or closed and stance open or closed to hit fade or draw This is what Nicklaus did
Yes that would be a great way to play, but this is more for practice as it develops skill and awareness of the face. Different options on the course but I like golfers to experiment during practice

Thanks Bruce, some may feel the left is easier to focus on, but if most are right handed then it’s probably that hand that will feel the most natural

Thanks Chris. I’ve saved this one to watch again 👍
Thanks Graham appreciate it 🙏🏻

Brilliant video. Love the concept.
Thanks Richard 🙏🏻
I spent 10 seconds trying to clean bits off my phone screen until I realised they were on yours Chris 😅
Yeah sorry about that 😬. We do clean the lenses each time but obviously missed a little bit this time
That driver 'skill' drill is something I do every round. Left/right/high/low😂. Never straight😂😂
🤣🤣
Good drills. Thanks
Thanks James
Well done Chris 👏 😊
Thanks Roy
Nice video Chris. Thank you. As I believe all handicap groups will benefit from this.
Thanks Marcus and agreed, good for all levels
Chris, the Grand Master of teachers
😁thanks 🙏🏻
I get the first comment!
Great suggestions, have started a version of these but gives good focus to what to try. Thanks Chris!
Thanks Richard, can’t recommend the
Is type of practice enough, so valuable to do
I tell my students GOLF is nothing but a stick a ball and hand eye coordination. It truly is a game of skill.
Sooooo true!
Just an excellent video but part of the problem is MOST golfers REFUSE to practice 😂 but this is great for ALL skill levels .....merry Christmas!!
Very true, and for many it’s just a time thing, I know myself now with work, family etc I don’t have as much time as I used to

Why are you controlling the face with the right hand rather than the left hand at release?

Today, I say pass ... 😅
