As good as this beautiful piece is, there are many more. This is one the best on this album. Graceland, is a work of musical art. His lyrics & instrumentals together is rather genius. Thank you for sharing this one!
Love Paul Simon, his intelligent lyrics, his rhythms, and melodies🎶. Graceland is one of the best albums of all time. Thanks for whoever recommended this and to you for bringing it today❣️. This is one of my favorites from the album except they really are all my favorites👌
@@musiclovingnurse2802 👋~ it is awesome truly! Have you seen the documentary called Under African Skies? It is all about going to South Africa and everything and everyone they encountered. Life long friendships were made for sure. A great collaboration.🎶
Peter Gabriel, and Paul Simon , in the mid to late 80s brought the South African sound mainstream. Been around for years before but never Top 40: billboard before that time. Music Changing!
That is Hugh Masakela on trumpet. Concert also included Miriam Makeba, both giants of S.African music from another generation. Please continue exploring Paul Simon as a solo artist. I believe his best music was as a solo artist.
Homeless is another song with Ladysmith Black Mombazo. It's gorgeous. I saw them live once, at the Cactus Festival in Bruges. It was such a happy experience.
As a drummer I think you'd appreciate Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" - it's a great song and story, but session drummer Steve Gadd came up with a beat that blew me away as a young drummer. The feel of it is unreal. Thanks for the reaction!
The sonic and political impact of this entire album was unlike anything before. In the middle of the wild 80's with great music that expressed the style of the times, Paul brought to the world the talent of the African musicians and rhythms. The impact was stunning. The fretless bass alone was a sound most had never heard in this fashion. Changed the direction of "world" music. Some had tried prior and did it well but this record reached throughout the world and brought us a new unique sound.
Graceland was an inspired album. Love Paul. Under African Skies was a great one from the same album. Also great going back are 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover, Late In The Evening, Mother and Child Reunion, & Still Crazy After All These Years. In 2002 he did one for a kids film of the Wild Thornberrys called Father and Daughter which is a sweet one I liked to play for my daughter when she was little. He dedicated it to his own daughter and his 10 yr old son sings backing harmonies on it.
Joy, joy nothing but joy. Paul’s voice is magic. His instrumental arrangements are genius and have been since the duo with Garfunkel. His newest album is so fire. ❤
Had the fortunate opportunity to see Paul Simon on the "Graceland" tour in June 1987, with Ladysmith Black Mombasso, his backing group here. I describe LBM as a combination of The Temptations and Gregorian Chanters. A great concert with tons of talent on stage, amazing songs and energy to burn.
Thank you so much for playing my recommendation!! I’d suggest reacting to pretty much any song at this concert. You can find all of them and/or the entire concert on UA-cam. Paul should have received the Nobel Peace prize!!!!!! The man was a genius with using music to bridge the divides!
Paul Simon songs that are specifically about Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia): Graceland ('She comes back to tell me she's gone'), Crazy Love vol.II ('Your life is on fire. It's all over the evening news') and Hearts and Bones, the title track from the album previous to Graceland. Carrie Fisher once said "If you can, you should get Paul Simon to write a song about you. He's very good at it" 😄
He was just listening to a south African group over and over. Dug deep. Got in contact with the people creating that music. A true artist journey to create something that stands apart from all he created before
Back in the day... I was helping my best friend wallpaper his living room. This was over 30 years ago. We put this album on, and were dancing and swishing wallpaper paste in time to the music. We were stoned as well obviously. We did a pretty good job considering :)
One of the most joyful videos ever. Paul Simon is such a great singer -- all-around musician. You should do an album review, beginning with Rhymin Simon. The experience of a whole album, especially one this good, is something special.
@@RockChick63174 I know he performed a great deal Solo, but I don't remember any buzz or radio play of any songs he wrote. So I wouldn't categorize it as "great."
"by the bodegas and the lights on Upper Broadway" - can't not smile when this gem slides on his tongue like it's the coolest line he's ever sung - and the man has loads of those.
I've made this comment before, but I think Paul Simon's best album (I love Graceland, too!) is his self-titled album (1972). Technically it's his second album, but it's the first album after the break with Garfunkel. It's got amazing acoustic guitar playing.
Absolutely. It is a timeless one that doesn't sound of one particular era or another, whereas Graceland does have the sort of production (big reverb, booming gated drums) that defined the 80s. Both are masterpieces, but I slightly prefer his debut. There's a rawer, less polished and perfected approach to it. Plus Paul does his usual folk brilliance on that one whereas Graceland doesn't have much of that. Paul Simon LP also has nods to Peruvian indigenous music, reggae, skiffle, jazz and blues. While he did great things with Art, his writing to me seemed to become a lot more varied, richer and worldly on his own. I think not having to write big epics for Art's powerful voice was part of it. He also was shying away from the more production ideas that had grown more and more grandiose with each S&G album until culminating in Bridge Over Troubled Water which has several showier numbers than anything on his solo debut.
Graceland is a modern American Masterpiece. Not in any ordinary sense; this album took the country by storm, introducing comepletely new artists and new sounds. The scope of the album is magnificent. To me, it feels like a concept album about a journey that took one far away, to return with treasures.

The concert was not played in South Africa, but in I believe, Zimbabwe. The musicians however, were all from S. Africa, most especially Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
My first exposure to world music was Ravi Shankar at Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. I wasn't there but saw the movie and was transfixed with Ravi's performance.
I was lucky to see Paul Simon's Graceland tour in Toronto , 1987. What a show! The song "Graceland" deserves your attention, as does "The Boy in the Bubble" referencing a few modern miracles of that era. Try it. You'll like it!
As both a big Elvis, and S&G fan,I bought the “Graceland” album mainly for the title song. In 1996, my late son, and Mother, went to Graceland, listening to that album the whole way. I was surprised by how much I loved the other African styled songs.Thank you for sharing!
Remember South Africa had apartheid. Artists going and working with South African artists was wonderful and fun, but the politicians in S Africa were shaking
I used to work for cable networks (such as MTv) and also cable companies. One day, I get on the elevator at work and who enters the elevator at another floor? Paul Simon and actor Wallace Shawn (from the Princess Bride). I was stunned to see them. I didn't say a thing - speechless. It is amazing to run into a person whose work you greatly admire.
Frankly, there are no tracks on "Graceland" that are not worth listening to. A fantastic album from start to finish. The title track (Graceland) is killer as well as The Boy In The Bubble, You Can Call Me Al, Under African Skies and Homeless. He followed up with "Rhythm Of The Saints", based upon music from South America, not as popular but very enjoyable. Solo Paul Simon work is quite a rabbit hole, welcome to Wonderland. LOL!
on the same record that Paul Simon put this song out on; he did a cover of "Loves Me Like A Rock" - originally done by the Dixie Hummingbirds - whenever I hear "Diamonds" this comes to mind - enjoy ua-cam.com/video/0Ct0JVwHNaE/v-deo.htmlsi=pBj1xCNwjP23FKVH
Ladysmith Black Mombazo is juuust so cool to say. I saw this tour. It was as much fun as it looks. Paul is a genius and should get the lion's share of credit for S&G. But- a very big BUT is that Art Garfunkle has the voice of an angel and Paul was smart enough to recognize his singular talent.
The concert in Central Park was amazing. Although several were hurt when a tree limb, of a tree they climbed up, broke. Mayor Dinkins gave a key to the city to Paul, at that event.
The bass player stayed with Simon for the next 35 years. Do an album review of this album and the next one, Rhythm of the Saints (South American influence). Welcome to the rabbit hole. Simon's solo career over 40 years earned him separate entry into the Rock Hall.
I absolutely get it. Art is just a form of personal expression to invoke a feeling in the listener or to share a message with the masses. It's a great way to spread great ideas. But it goes both ways sadly.
@@L33Reacts Was just a general comment directed at no one person specifically. More, it was an acknowledgement of how the arts communicate politics no matter what 'side' one might be on or whether one is consciously political at all. Being alive is being political; it can't be helped. And the arts expresses conscious, unconscious, and subconscious politics of the individual. Paul Simon took a political stance by participating in this event and by performing with Ladysmith Black Mombaso, amongst other culturally diverse musicians. He actually considered writing some political songs for the event, but decided his appearance and reputation was enough (and that 'political songs' were not his forte). My comment was not meant as a complaint, critique, or partisan stance. Just a reminder that all art communicates politics. Politics can't be segregated from art. And since I have the 'floor' for a moment, politics can be argument or it can be debate or just simply communication. And art is one means of entering the communication. From there, we can argue (which is about who is correct) or we can debate (which is about identifying problems, discovering options, and determining priorities). We're all in a bad time of 'either/or' when we need to understand mutual problems. We all hurt, we all struggle, and we all need each other. We need to set conflict aside and work together to help each other. Our politics follow our maturity and character, and it will improve if we refuse to get tangled in the combat of cliques and subgroups. If any subgroup has a complaint, let's hear the complaint. If we can help, let's help. And we need to identify the constant complainers who can never be satisfied; they will always be out there. The thing is, politics is how human beings interact. It's not inherently 'evil'. How it's used, when it's weaponized, THAT is the evil, and it's in us all to some extent. It remains that art, communication, honest expression is how we solve problems and get along. As long as we try to read each other, we can improve life. I think I just took the long way of saying what you said so succinctly, Lee.
This style of music is known as Township Jive which came out of the black townships during the time of Apartheid. Like reggae in Jamaica. it combines old rhythms with new music and is a mix of joyful music and political statement. Simon was the person who introduced it to the masses with "Graceland". He had to tread carefully because of the sanctions against SA at that time but he was very smart about it and didn't ruffle too many feathers.
