I’ve seen a lot of coaches talk about releasing your jaw, I don’t remember any actual helpful and clear exercises like the ones you gave here. Thank you.
Hello Mark ! I've been taking singing lessons for three years now. But I must admit, watching your videos helps just as much as my lessons ! You just get to the point, no blabla, concise, efficient ... Thank you !
Check out my three part video "Singing With a Cold." Basically, what you're up against with your allergies is the same as a cold - meaning swollen sinuses. The blocked feeling makes you want to push more air pressure which is what locks out those octaves. Take the volume down and use that "cold" routine.
I love this exercise Mark! Great to finally find something that works the problems of the mind during singing. This is a great way to trick my brain to let it hang loose. The most easy exercises are often the most genius :) - Thank you!
finally some help on the tension !! thanks a lot !! btw do you have any info in singin techniqes? not scremo or growl but the techniqe to get thad dave grohl sound or chad koreger (nickelback)? how to have that rasp with out wearing it out so fast
I've got a downloadable lesson on that kind of rasp on a website called SingerCity (dot) com. Go to the site and click on Singing Lessons - then scroll down a little and you'll see it.
Hi Mark. I've been working on this exercise, and found that I'm fairly free of jaw tension these days. The issue is, whenever I'm using the 'ah' vowel sound, my voice is producing a partial vocal fry, not connecting fully... I'm tried adding more compression, is there a common problem I've missed to take into account perhaps?? (hard for you to know without hearing, but maybe you have an idea of what I mean)... Thanks for all your wisdom always
Hi can you answer this for me ....... Friday nights in Church have worship with about 10-15 song but when I get in to it I start to yawn a lot do you know why that is happening?????????
This is awesome! question, am at the 2 fingers, but i do have some teeth marks, biting down a bit indeed, my question is, how do i fix that? conciously practicing to release the jaw? or will it sort of fix itself out with repetition?.
+Misael V. Your jaw will only relax by asking it to over and over again. It's better to let your voice lose control then let the jaw rush in to rescue. In the long term view - free your jaw and your voice will follow!
Voice Lesson.com Awesome! thanks for taking part of your time to answer me. I've been singing and training for quite some time but my problem has been that ive had too much focus on vocal exercises to improve the voices characteristics, and completely missed the point that to get the most of your voice you need to free it from all kinds of tensions and body restrictions, its a cohesive machine it all needs to be working properly. Now am focusing on these aspects with much more dilligency and having great results, watched your video on larynx/tongue, i was having throuble with feeling like my throat was tight, took your advice and worked on my tongue especially and now my voice feels much lighter and freer. Of course i do a bunch of exercises to work on tons of aspects, now am receiving much better results. So thank you! lesson learned for sure.
Checked out your track - liked it. You sing with heart and soul. Can't teach that. I think experience (time) along with vocalizing will bring you where you want to be. Just like the style of clothes you wear - there's no correct or incorrect when it comes to singing. It's all about what was intentional versus unintentional - and only the artist knows what he meant to sing. When your voice starts dialing in exactly what you want you'll be a happy artist. It's worth putting in the work.
Will this help with TMJ? I have a cracking / popping sound on the left side of my jaw when I open wide. I've had this problem for years. After doing this exercise though my jaw seems more relaxed.
Thanks for the fast response! You are very gifted when it comes to teaching about voice and singing techniques. I really appreciate you taking the time to upload these videos.
Given the emphasis on relaxed jaw and neck muscles, I'm confused by the phenomenon of 'singer's neck' - the strained or athletic appearance of the necks of professional singers. Veins bulge and muscles appear to be working hard during performance. So it seems that singing builds this musculature quite significantly. Please explain... :)
+Finchesca You are confusing fame for efficiency. Many professional singers engage unnecessary external muscles when singing. Mostly because many people view this as passion.
He likes it... as Mark said, it's sort of external to the voice... he adds that on top of his phonation, his basic sound most likely doesn't depend on it, but I could be wrong. On the other hand, an exercise like what Mark shows on this video is just about isolation... it's 100% pure voice.
Actually what I mean is that it trains a transparent voice whereas the tense neck and other things produce a certain 'sound' on top of the voice. it that makes sense! It's a guitar stompbox on the voice :D

I hope it helps!
I can't thank you enough for this video!!! My jaw is looser now than it's been in 15 years!!

This is v.v.important exercise and its very much useful for a singer to keep the jaw loose while singing. Thanks Max to share this video. 🙏
You're welcome - I hope it helps.
I've taught voice lessons for years. I loved your exercise. Thank you!
If the ultrasounds came up negative then you are simply harboring an imbalance of tension. Most likely from bracing your jaw when singing.
u r very good teacher sir
Thank you! Glad to help.

JAw is relaxed, but the tongue is relatively active--especially on the ee sound, yes?
Or the tongue does move a bit..correct?
+Wanda Nowicki Absolutely - the tongue is what creates an EE sound.

Chronic tight jaw too

Well you answered your own question! This exercise helps my TMJ - but obviously everyone has to explore and adjust to their personal circumstances.

Helpful, Thanks.
Hvorostovsky I feel, had the most malleable throat?🎶✨
Wonderful voice!
So if the tongue is wiggling, it's a good thing?
If you're asking it too - it is. If it wiggles when you don't want it to then its responding to stress.
@@voicelessondotcom ok great, thank you!
Does this release tongue tension?
Yes!
Comforting note about the saliva production. :D

Someone watched some Ken Tamplin videos :D
No, I didn't...but you mentioned it so now I just did. Ow. That looks stressful. Would be exhausting having that as a hobby!
