    @15:07 Back in the day (Decades Ago) when I did oil changes, when the filter was removed, I would clean the mounting base with a rag and then apply new clean oil to the gasket ring. Also I remember the day when on a Chevy, you had to loosen the bolt and the steel can came down with the filter inside it. Then you had to remove the two bolts holding the filter base plate so you could remove the sealing ring. Then you went over to the parts washer and cleaned everything, put the new sealing gasket ring on the filter base, bolted that piece back in, put the new filter cartridge in the steel can and bolted that assembly back on to the engine block. Hundreds of times.

    People have been dry installing oil filters since they began putting them on engines. When you drain your oil you're not draining every drop of oil out of your engine. Your bearings and everything else still has oil on it. Generally you warm the engine up at least some and get oil pumped through the engine which also helps with getting sludge and debris out of the pan. Even if you don't warm up the engine/oil there is oil on the internal moving parts at least enough to protect the parts from damage for the one or two seconds it takes to fill the filter. Many older engines had filters that mounted horizontally or at an angle which prevented being able to put oil in the filter without losing all or most of it during install. Some engines like BMW have top up side down filters so there is no way to prefill them. A lot of filters today are next to impossible to even get to without having to tip, twist and turn them and have three opposing. You'd be wearing most of the prefill oil.

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 3 місяці тому

      Plus any long standing the oil will empty from the galleries, and at start up the top will be dry, and even filters with inlet and outlet anti drain valves will not help, though they at least do minimise the volume of drained oil to that in the galleries alone, as the filter stays full.

    • @riaanlouw1874
      @riaanlouw1874 3 місяці тому

      And a few cars have the filters mounted upside down, near the top of the engine. Try pre-filling them.

    • @MattExzy
      @MattExzy 3 місяці тому +1

      I just prefill my filter for convenience sake - I find I can hit the F mark on the stick first go, start the engine and it's still at that point without needing to top off - because that volume of empty filter is taken up by the prefill. But that's also because it's a vertical upward facing filter, I imagine it'd be impossible on any other orientation. Anywho, that's the only reason I prefill - inherent laziness.

    • @johnb1658
      @johnb1658 2 місяці тому

      I guess you never heard cam gears grinding and timing chains rattling like crazy at startup from an empty filter when it starts! There is a bmw engine that the engineers claim the bearing failure was caused by dry start condition after oil changes. It’s worth filling the filter when it’s possible.

  • @jdesaavedra0432
    @jdesaavedra0432 3 місяці тому +5

    I've only filled filters on hydrostatic systems because not doing so introduces excessive air into the system. No engine runs without oil when installing a new filter. The new filter fills in a small fraction of a second and it is not on the suction side. Go ahead and knock yourself out pre-filling inverted, horizontal, and cartridge filters. Also all euro style filters, including Chrysler, drain each time the engine stops. Geesh--I've only been doing this since the 1960s.

    • @jimmyaber5920
      @jimmyaber5920 3 місяці тому

      I have never seen an engine have a problem from dry installed filter. Years back as a Buick mechanic, guys that filled filters would have a Buick V8 not build oil pressure and rattle. The simple fix was to remove filter, add an extra quart of oil to make pump lift be 1/2 inch or less and crank engine over until oil pushed out at filter base. Install filter and it would be fine again.

    The engine shield on this Maverick is actually a two piece unit. The front portion of the shield should stay in place, the four torx fasteners get removed and only the back section comes off. The two bolts that were tight would normally not be taken out.

      Seems like the plastic door thing should open for the oil to drain and then the front panel comes off for the oil filter. I was thinking the same with back piece at first, but I think the front piece covers the oil filter. Can't really know without actually seeing it though.

      Honestly, until I read this comment I literally made myself believe that only the outside of his funnel was dirty just to make me feel better about it and not criticize the professional. However, it appears I'm not the only one worried about such things.

    Ohhh common with the myths, I have lived up North for 40 years and never did my washer fluid freeze. Unless it is some homemade brew that was watered down. Winter windshield washer fluid formulas can stay liquid until -20 to -40 degrees Fahrenheit depending on their ingredients. But still love your content Ray..love your channel.😉 I know down in the southern states a lot of people run straight water in the radiator as well, not a smart move IMHO either.

    I agree with Ray on the electronic shifters..., I hate those things. My neighbor has a Fusion and it would not start because the "plastic" linkage disconnected at the transmission while it was in drive. I manage to locate the linkage and reconnect it temporarily so she could could at least drive it to the repair shop. Had I not found the problem and manage to do a temporary fix, she would have been out a towing fee in addition to the repair itself.

    While I don't really have a preference of prefilling vs not prefilling an oil filter, I find the argument about contaminants a bit skewed by the fact that a lot of oil filters come without a plastic wrap. Just a cardboard box that isn't sealed, rattling around, collecting dust, possible bits of cardboard, and anything else that might have slipped inside.

    If they can get processed down and put high quality materials into one, I'd consider it. But if I were going to use it in any real capacity, I'm going for an older Ford. The first truck I ever drove was a 1948 F1. Dad sold it to a collector because it was in solid condition, and the vacuum wipers and old tube radio still worked. Only 100hp but it was built to last. We have had Ford trucks in my family from the 1948, to as new as 1999. In contrast we had 2 gm trucks. A 64 Chevy half ton, 4 speed with a 283, and an old grain truck. A 1 ton dually gmc with a 5 speed and a 305 v6. Gas hog from hell, but it was more reliable than the sunrise. Sold the gmc to an old farmer and he did a frame off restoration and its a beautiful candy red with oak planks and side boards on the bed. Super single rear tires and all LED lights, inside and out. Air conditioning from vintage air. This is the truck that runs in the local parades and his tailgating truck. He also bought my old hodaka combat wombat and 2 triumph motorcycle engines. I love it when I see a vehicle my family sold to someone with the resources to save those classics. If we could only convince the general population to do the same, but scrap steel is going for big money and probably going to China. Not enough people care enough to check on that. Makes me kinda sad.

But i do like the redundancy for the just in case one time i somehow end up being taken away from the current task then come back to it and forget it.

    You also need to pull the dipstick and remove the cap first so that the oil drains easier. Also, you're making a stink about filling oil filters before installing them, then filling the crankcase using a dirty funnel!

  • @john_thorpe
    @john_thorpe 2 місяці тому

    Here's another thing to think about. When your car sits overnight (or for more than one day, if it's not your daily driver) the oil settles down into the pan, well a good portion of it, some is still held up in the valve cover area around the rockers, etc. so since some of the oil doesn't into the pan, there's always some oil in the system to prevent dry starts after settling overnight, or even multiple days. The oil pump is mechanical, not electronic like a fuel pump... if the couple of seconds was a critical thing, then you'd need to pre-oil your engine prior to starting, which people don't do. The only way I'd see it as an issue is if you removed the engine, took the oil pan off and drained it, then the valve covers, etc. and flipped the engine over and drained it that way ... then you'd want to pour some oil in to lube it prior to re-firing the engine.

    My father had a garage in Central Africa. He had a customer who would send his Citroen 900 miles, on the back of a heavy duty truck, for every service. Truck needed because the roads in the wet season (half the year) were impassable for any passenger vehicle, even the Deux Cheval, with it's impressive off road handling. You are not going to drive when the mud is deeper than the height of the vehicle, and going off road involved a few axes to remove the trees, and possibly blasting as well, for the more obstinate ironwood and other hard wood trees. Dry season you has dry rutted road, which is why so much went via rail. Freight in very cheap, deadheading on the cars coming in to load up on copper anodes for export. Now they go via truck, and come down to South Africa to get to port.

    I had 300k on the bottom end of my vw, when I pulled the motor out and tore it down. After all those miles, the bearings were still coated silver, there were no ring grooves, and the cylinders still had cross hatches. It ran with Castrol synthetic is whole life. My top 2 choices are Castrol and Mobil 1. My sick shift BMW used 50W Mobil 1 from the factory (ZF). The only additives I've ever used on my cars were Techron for the fuel injection system and clutch lube in the diff in my BMW 325i. BMW uses clutches in the posi diffs, which need a special lubricant in the gear lube.
