for the multiband saturation trick you could parallel process the sub bass and the mid frequencies (however you do that in your daw) differently and then saturate the mids differently from the sub
Hes saying you do paralel processing with the bass. You leave the sub alone on one channel. Then in the parallel channel you add the saturation to the mix, compress it, then send them both to a mix buss. This blends you uncompressed sub, with a saturated compressed sub and gives you a beefier bass all around without increasing its volume,( as long as you dial in the right levels on the two paralell signals)
Man, this is crazy! Just played a track to a buddy of mine on my phone and I was wondering how I could make it sound better. Great timing and always one of my favorite tutorial channels! Thank you.
I super appreciate this channel. I've learned so much over the past year just churning through your videos. I feel like I'm leveling up in realtime and becoming a better producer. I picked up the course a while ago and it's been inspiring me big time. I'd been stuck in this rut thinking that if I created a song with lyrics, that I'd have to be the one to sing it ... but your song "Don't Let Me Go" where you worked with those 2 Norwegian guys unlocked that self-imposed restriction and has really made a difference. I've already started incorporating this "saturating the upper bands in the bass" method in many of my songs with you to thank. Keep at it man - I'll probably be picking up a drum sample pack around Christmas. Peace.
Dude I have been listening to so many people professional big people and all kinds of other people but dude you just killed the game with this video this is on point the most of any video I have watched and boy is this a big stress off my shoulders thanks man this helped me out sooooo much 🙏🙏🙏 You the man👊✊
Thanks for this video, I was looking for a way to stream and mix my sessions on my phone. Watching this I just realized I could probably use zoom as well! Thank you!
Also good to listen on the little internal speakers from like a mini mac. The changes are just like on a phone heard very clear and immediately. Good vid again!
Thank you so damn much for this man. Ive been mixing my first duo album and want it to slap, it sounds fine through my monitors but so tinny through my mobile, I hoenstly didnt even think to just cut off the low and high end, then using a multiband. Appreciate your knowledge!
This is actually a smart way of doing it because when you use the phone not all phones sound the same some phones have a pretty good bass resolution and some phone sound like they're playing through a pipe🤔😀😂 But I did notice that when I was producing trance that I never had this issue with phones because of the layering low mid highs
I found this because I was searching informations about frequency responds of smart phones. It is interesting how to consider the limitations of those devices into music production. Thank you!
Hey Big Z, love the content! Do you think you could start matching the volume levels of the before and after? I find it a bit difficult to hear what's really going on when the after is notably louder than the before. Thanks!
Been playing with both Le Petite Excite and Substrate tonight as it happens, both free saturation plugins, but Substrate adds bass harmonics from a low frequency that you can set, and Le Petite Excite saturates both high and low, separately, but doesn't boost the bass so much down low. Petite would be what you'd want for phone speakers, both together are sounding pretty good in my mixing position! 🙂👍
So you're just saturation the bass track in you're mix to get it to cut through on you're phone? It doesn't lessen the quality of the original bass track? It doesn't throw off the whole mix? Sorry, just a little confused.
@@CaptainVelveeta What happens is that harmonics are added to the bass signal. These harmonics are higher than the fundamental note of the bass, but directly related to the fundamental. So even though your phone, or other small speaker can't play notes as low as the fundamental note, because we hear the harmonics, or brains are tricked into thinking that they can hear the fundamental note too. It's a psychoacoustic effect. In solo, you won't really notice much difference in the bass sound, it will just sound a little more full, or at extremes, like you've added some distortion by cranking the gain on an amp or adding an overdrive pedal.
@@Dave-Rough-Diamond-Dunn Wow...that kinda makes me wanna do an in-depth study on psychoacoustic effects just to see what other tricks I can learn...thanks for the learning
But you are still mixing the bass according to the rest of the track, just turn the fader down more if it got louder, the point is to make those 150-400hz frequencies equally loud as the frequencies which phone doesnt pick up
@@mir9168 I think he’s pointing out that the ‘original version’ and the ‘optimized version’ should’ve been played at the same volume so it’s easier to compare
I check my mixes on phone, MP3 media player, laptop using regular 3.5mm jack output without enhancements ( changing from great to average headphones) , car stereo and studio monitors. That gives me overall view where some FQ or sounds must be improved.
Man this was truly an epic video. Thank you. My mixes sounds great on my laptop, my studio speakers and my car, but sound like shit on my phone, which is where I know most people will be listening. I know there is something in the low end of all those other places that is different on the phone. But I have not been able to figure it out.
I’m not sure if I did that first one right. I played the audio from sonar to the computer and recorded from a UA-cam video, but the waves was going up and down in volume. may I have a stem or something of what you used cause I don’t know how to make one of those
"you gotta accept the fact that most people will never appreciate all the little details and effort you put into your mix"
I do
@@Walid.OnTheTrack6725you the real mvp
I call them earcandies

After: This made a lot more sense
That bass trick alone is pure gold!
this has been the most insightful mixing video ive seen in weeks. and i have been on a binge
Please do more saturation videos! In my opinion it’s the most important mixing skill behind EQing.
that's easier than Eq, just don't put it on a whole master cause you gonna f*ck it
for the multiband saturation trick you could parallel process the sub bass and the mid frequencies (however you do that in your daw) differently and then saturate the mids differently from the sub
Too convoluted whatever you are trying to say
@@MrFree-vj8qj Frequency split and then saturate the different frequency ranges :D
Came here to say that!

Boosting the bass without touching the low !!!! Just wow 🤩… thanks man.
Yes that is possible by boosting upper harmonies that usually are low.
Fenomenal video... clear , concise and super useful info! LOVE , your short videos (max 7-8 min) Thank you for making them 💚 Efficient!
Amazing zip Z!
Would have been so cool if you uploaded the EQ shape as a preset, but yeah, overall a very helpful video!

Perceived loudness from the harmonics. Its not louder on the metering
