This quote is often used to undermine those with many interests or skills (but only because the second part is never included), but so in fact it is meant to highlight how much more valuable diverse knowledge is.
For the past three weeks I've restricted my media intake to Saturdays exclusively. Throughout the week I read, write, etc. It's been so amazing, I feel like I've been able to navigate my mind again and just sit in silence. Interestingly, when I use media with intent, I find that I'm done within a few hours. I seriously don't know what I used to watch all the time.
That's an amazing idea honestly. I do something a bit similar on Sundays, where I reserve that for movies or documentaries I was meaning to watch. Much more intentional.
Fully on board with the concept of becoming a "Renaissance Man". I've progressed in my life quite far since I started being honest with myself and stopped justifying my failures. I am now chasing the ideal image of the human that I want to become. Your videos add fuel to my motivation. Although I want to rely on consistency more than motivation, having some motivation definitely helps.
ok, but are you a spy? I literally just wrapped up a mini essay, about polymaths, and my desire to be one. Thanks for your videos, they mean a lot to me.
Second reference to ham radio I've heard this week. It's making a comeback! :) I (and my parents) got into it when I was in my teens. Helped me get out of my shell a little bit, and I ended up talking to people in some pretty neat places. Then we moved and never set up the tower because of zoning problems. Growing up there was a great local club filled with willing and helpful people ready to answer questions. Hopefully there are still clubs like that out there. Glad you made this video. Just what I needed to hear.
I loved your comments about health. I am 63 years old. I fell - not old lady fall but a slippery surface fall - and hurt myself. Long story short - months of pain, surgery, recovery, still recovering and still have pain. I can't do what I need to or want to do. You are so correct about health having an effect on your learning and mental outlook. Have a wonderful day, month, year! 😁
The old video you refer to was the video which introduced me to your channel. I've been trying to this recipe of one hour for the three fields and the times when I manage it I feel more fulfilled. My hobbies at the moment - cooking, photography, writing my newsletter. Thanks for the great video : )

So I stumbled upon your channel by looking up the obsidian video and your tips and tricks. My hobby? Medieval reenactment. It's the hobby that breeds other hobbies. It lead me to horse riding, historical sewing, chain mail making, martial arts, and now I'm researching armouring. It's like crack for history buffs.
Ham radio is a super super diverse hobby; there definitely could be creative aspects such as building radios/designing systems, but a lot of it is tinkering/adjusting your system or actually getting on the air and monitoring or communicating with both people that you know or people that you don't know. There is something called POTA which is basically where you go into the woods and see how many contacts you can make, there are a lot of emergency preparedness/emergency response related things, there is something called QRP which is basically where you try to see how many contacts or how far you can contact with as low power as possible, there is CW (morse code) which is very active still and quite relevant especially for QRP, etc... In the US you just need to take a test to get a Technician license (first of three levels) and then go get a cheap ($25) radio and start dabbling, it's pretty easy to get into and you can go as deep as you want without ever running out of things to learn/try/achieve. As far as building out a "skill tree," ham radio is definitely one of the most interesting hobbies that also unlocks or aids a bunch of other related hobbies/interests like electronics, emergency preparedness, hiking/offroading/overlanding, pilot license, DIY...
Very cool, thanks for all the detail! Sounds like it's one of the more practical skills in times of unrest, should that ever happen. I also like the social element built into it, that should make for some interesting stories.
I recently came across a book titled The Renaissance Soul: How to Make Your Passions Your Life by Margaret Lobenstine. I’m barely in the first two chapters and I finally can put a term to my multi-passions. I’ve always liked to create something even if it’s not perfect because I’m just too curious of will it work or not. Great video as always 😊👏👏
@3:35 Just food for thought, that may not be the best example of Good Health = Happiness/Feeling better. I've known from experience (after multiple varied injuries lol) that this feeling 'bad' about not being able to workout the way I want is more linked to perfectionism. I think this is a very modern problem we impose on ourselves (myself included) where we feel shitty because our workout isn't optimized as possible and we failed to reach that goal. Injuries are this to the maximum, because we are forced to limit ourselves to get better. But this limitation should still spark happiness in us because we're cutting back LITERALLY for our own health. But in reality we don't, because of perfectionism. Thank you for this video. As a student, exercise helps me clear my mind between studying and working on my own projects. Personally, having a lot of interests makes learning challenging. I would love to see growth in all of them. But seeing myself working on one makes me feel like I'm losing the skills I've learned. I like to create art, write code, learn music, and I'd love to be a content creator someday. However I'm not entirely sure how to showcase my work in a format others can consume. Managing my time is going to be the end of me, I swear.
I remember that original video of yours, it was better than you think, but then we are always our own worst critics ;) In any case, it did inspire me even back then to more or less follow the system, so it did its job. You're videos are of great inspiration to me, in how to think and approach life. My project is the outdoors. I run, hike and cycle, whilst documenting a bit of this on my outdoor instagram page via video and photo. I properly started to pursue this passion 18 months ago, and have found a much more fulfilling life as a result. This culminated in a recent long distance bikepacking trip across Europe, where I was able to raise almost £900 for charity. Please keep these videos coming. Hi Ody, a few months ago I got 3 quarters through one of your videos (in audio form) before I realised I recognised your voice! Been following since as they're a good reminder of my goals. My question is have you considered a video on multi-tasking? And what do you think about it? I consume a lot of educational podcasts while im doing tasks that don't require my brain eg. when walking or travelling somewhere, cooking, cleaning or between sets at the gym. It's allowed me to gain a lot of knowledge while retaining my free time although it's probably damaged my attention span a bit as i dont spend much time in silence anymore.
Thanks for the video! It's a bit late in the day to get the full three hours done, but I've got the sketchbook out and I'm working on a drawing I've been meaning to finish :)
Great video! If I may add a thing to the consuming part, in my opinion socializing, talking with friends/strangers, going to (if you can, a more sophisticated) party is still consuming. Observing people, interacting with others, consuming the world basically, our world. It's great to read/watch movies/or listen to music, but I don't want anyone to neglect socializing in their lives, because they have to read a book or watch a video essay. We are social creatures. No. That’s why I watch videos like this, read books, watch film and write. I’ve tried excluding all of these things, living entirely alone with my thoughts but inevitably I turn against myself in a vicious manner. So for now my best bet is to sedate, to attempt to distract myself (it never works). What do you do when nothing, whether external or internal changes your state of mind, your inner-most philosophy, your fundamental value judgments. What is there left to do?
Make a safe space for yourself inside of your own mind. Then treat yourself as you would a person who you love and respect. Self acceptance is often a behavior that is punished by society. For the simple reason that you are easier to control when you lack self-respect. Thus, self-acceptance and self-respect often need to be learned, relearned, and rewarded internally. Oftentimes, for me, being cruel with myself is a sign that I need better boundaries with others or is a symptom of stress. Keep at it, and you'll find a good way to have a better internal landscape.
@@Daniel-j6l Could you tell me more about that inner philosophy? is it that you lack a meaningful purpose? Is it that you fear the worst for the future? I'm not going to pretend to be well-versed in this sort of thing, but I can understand where you might be coming from. Despite all my progress, I'm no happier than I was a year or two ago, and I'm just trying to compare my experience to yours. I feel that the important thing is getting to the core of the problem, and that can only be done by asking a lot of questions unfortunately.
Man- something about the constant dismissal of everyone who isn’t in similar intelectual spaces as you just comes off as simple and unhelpful. Like, I appreciate the structure of a 3 hour balance of interests that feed into and help elevate each other, but who’s going to benefit from this advice if you wave away certain modes of consumption or dismiss interests that many people have built into their lives? Wish this video was more thought through or better worded
When did I dismiss anyone else? In the part I talked about 'trash' content, I even assured that there's a time and place for that stuff too. I like it sometimes, but I won't lie and say it's all one should do in life -scrolling and bingeing trash literature or reels or whatever. If that's all someone wants to do, fine -I'm not talking to them in these videos.
@@odysseas__Id say it’s in how you were dismissing “booktok” in a single line, as often people like to group it as a single entity where no books of import or value are talked about. That along side your negative comment about weed use, I worry it puts certain demographics in a box outside yourself. I understand you went into some detail about distinguishing things you consume for fun or pleasure from things to consume to better oneself but I believe the way you talked about some of the slop paints larger strokes than you were intending
@@kattailsbackwardssoaieg9304 Of course, there's always nuance, but fleshing that all out would be both very long and tiresome. Nobody needs me to explain how booktok isn't just one thing -people know that -and nobody should take my comment and interpret it as weed=bad, always and everywhere. The context matters.
@ that’s reasonable, I just commented to highlight that I found it othering, even if it was minor or unintentional It sort of tainted the rest of the video for me personally, but I liked the other points you brought up
Hey ody, I've noticed that youre following Nick Fuentes on Twitter, who is a raging fascist through and through Are you aware, that he is that kind of person?
News to me -must be from a while ago. I've never watched any of his stuff either, I just know he's a right-wing commentator. Also by the way, following someone doesn't mean you agree with them. It's healthy when your feed doesn't parrot your political views.

@ that’s reasonable, I just commented to highlight that I found it othering, even if it was minor or unintentional
It sort of tainted the rest of the video for me personally, but I liked the other points you brought up
Hey ody, I've noticed that youre following Nick Fuentes on Twitter, who is a raging fascist through and through
Are you aware, that he is that kind of person?
News to me -must be from a while ago. I've never watched any of his stuff either, I just know he's a right-wing commentator.
Also by the way, following someone doesn't mean you agree with them. It's healthy when your feed doesn't parrot your political views.
@@odysseas__ Healthy View on the whole thing. Did not want to push you into any direction, just found it a bit strange!
@@kickerich9402 No worries, and I understand
I remember the original video
It was the first video I have ever watched by you.
After watching you a few other videos, I decided to subscribe.
Personally, I think a simple approach to this could be
Exercise - the gym/callisthenics
Learning - reading/UA-cam
Creative - cooking/lego
Keep up the amazing work
