It seems to me after the first time I have listened to Arnold Bax; full of enthusiasm and structured too. I am contented with his attempt in this composition.
A much clearer (closer?) recording than other easily available recordings, which reveals more of the inner complexities and motifs. I would have loved to hear it live.
Simply put, a fantastic live performance of a fabulous piece of music. For those of us who were in attendance at Chicago Symphony Hall back in 2000 -- as well as for all other music-lovers -- thank you for posting this audio documentation of an unforgettable event.
Im a devotee of Bax, adore his music. His biography (Fairwell My Youth)is the most enchanting read. Full of interest and honesty. I lived in Tintagel for 38 years and can testify his tone poem of the same name is a musical portrait of the sea and coast to a tee.
There is plenty of Bax on UA-cam but I agree we should hear far more in the concert hall. Vernon Handley's Chandos symphony cycle is particularly wonderful.
Every section in the orchestra, seemingly every player in each section, is recorded with vivid fidelity in this great recording. The celesta, which often adds dissonant zest to the texture, is nearly always audible. The sonics are faithful to Bax's famous counterpoint, found here to be more intricate than one suspects from many commercial recordings. We can hear why Bax compared orchestral scoring to "Egyptian labor." And the great trumpeter who cuts through the welter while never sacrificing lyricism must be the CSO's Adolph Herseth. For once, this is played as a real bacchanalia.
He’s inside the complex counterpoint and English style complications while the swell and ebb are well conducted; he admires the work and its mystical nature painting and provided a Halle CD of the work a decade later. However this is largely simple boisterous triumphalism alternating with faded pastoral irrelevance at times approaching muzak. He provides deeply misplaced bluff and architecture rather than inward focus and luxurious in-itself interest, the music’s essence escaping him as with so many others; also lacks the ethereal magic Handley finds in places.

... indeed a fine English compositon, well executed - a commendable posting: full of remarable antique pictures - many thanks for this ...
Why don’t we hear more of Bax? This is terrific.

A fantastic composer. The British public's neglect of Bax is a scandal. (One of very many...)
