What wonderful music this man composed. This is my first hearing of this piece, and 1 minute in I love it already! I Thank for God the British composers of the 20th and late 19th century.
Bax's response to the Easter Uprising and the loss of Padraig Pearse. Bax's poem published under his Dermot O'Byrne pseudonym about the Uprising was banned in the UK and this piece of music lay hidden for 80 years until this first recording by Tod Handley in 1996. Subsequently played at the Proms in 2009, it is a powerful piece.
It doesn't say much for the programmers at the BBC that it had to wait a further 13 years before being played at the Proms after Tod Handley had the gumption to record it. (Actually it was played in 2008, but who cares). A great piece by Bax, but proves the BBC do little to promote neglected/forgotten music at the Proms. It's time for a massive shake up.
I have just heard this for the first time. I went to a concert in Hertfordshire, by the County Youth Orchestra, and it was one of two pieces (Respighi, Pines of Rome being the other). What a delight (even if it is a tinged-with-sadness story)
From "Shells at Oranmore" by "Dermot O'Byrne" Never before had such a song been sung, Never again perhaps while ages run, Shall the old pride of rock and wind be stung By such an insolence winged across the sun, So mad a challenge flung!
The man you want to contact is Graham Parlett, at graham@davpar.com. He is a Bax scholar and has done a tremendous amount of work on reconstructing scores, cataloguing Bax's works from start to finish (much as Szolloszy did for Bartok, Koechel did for Mozart, Schmieder did for Bach etc.), and so much more. Good luck!
I am afraid I can't answer this question, alas. So, I do hope that somebody else will see it and be able to give you the information you are looking for.

And Bax used this piece's themes in his music for the film Oliver Twist (1948).

solid work, which I will add to my Bax CD shelf. TG the conducting done by Handley, not the ruinous Bryden Thompson.
Read his biography. Bit of a ladiesman was Arnold
