I knew a kid who went AWOL. He was gone for about a week. He came back and turned himself into his sgt. He told the sergeant and his commanding officer he had to take some time to think about what he was doing. He said he realized what he was doing was wrong, which is why he came back to face the music.
Dude was lucky. They gave him a break. They didnt court-martial him.
There was a guy who did that on the Devil's Brigade too. So it happens.

@@innapinch7112 I lived about half of my life on the Canadian side of a town with US/Canada border access. At one point I was crossing weekly during the summer as I was a big fan of the DIRT racing series and would cross most Friday nights in the summer to see the races in Ransomville NY. I only ever got asked to see what was in my trunk once and that was by a Canadian border agent. Saying that, I heard several stories from family and friends about being delayed by US Customs for searches. We also had reports in our local newspaper about a family having their trailer torn apart (literally) by US Customs who were apparently upset because they couldn’t find anything.

While they do it, they lock you up in a 3x5 room that only has a chair and small table and only let you out if all is ok. After, they can empty your truck if they wish to. And while they do this, they can bring you in for a full search, questioning, they take your wallet, phone and all and check everything. I know, I've been through the entire process a few times. @@HarrisChoudhry Am I "defending" gravity when I point out that things mass are attracted to each other? It's not a "defense" to point out facts. Border agents are not police, and crossing a border is not crossing a street. These are facts. "Wtf" is a clear expression of shock, demonstrating that the OP was not aware of these facts. And here you are pretending that pointing out nitrogen scattering blue light makes the sky appear blue is a "defense" of daylight.
Border agency powers are established by legislation rather than physics, but they are still facts and a part of our reality. You don't like it, you're welcome to try to change it - but you're going to have a tough slog, since Canada only implemented the practice 2 years after the US did, and are unlikely to rescind it unless the US does. And the US is highly unlikely to do so because they are catching far too many smugglers this way - particularly for human trafficking - to be willing to give it up.
The shock of discovering that citizens of country A do not have rights in country B is something that most Americans experience for the first time as they are crossing a border, because you propagandize yourselves so heavily you think your rules apply everywhere. Canada actually has very similar citizens' rights to the US, although they are more strictly enforced (cops can't just go over to the next county and get rehired), but they are not the same. And Canadians are not citizens of the US, nor are Americans citizens of Canada.
