I was thinking the same. Especially with the impacts of dropping pots onto it. I've seen some people use both CA and wood glue at the same time, so the CA holds it while the wood glue dries.
Jay Bates just did a giant clock face with inlaid features and used a layer of shellac, then spray stencil paint for filling the inlays, which scraped/sanded off much easier and gave really clean lines.
You are only an inch shorter than me and you like red wine too, a match made in heaven ms fav youtuber 🤣.... I love the skittles game, I'm gonna try that ☺️... Great video ms
5'8" ?? wow, you look shorter on youtube... 😆😆😆 Seriously, lots of good router jig tips with that growth chart project. Now, just brace yourself for all the incoming "why isn't it metric" comments...
Une vidéo très agréable avec le petit plus (de jolies réalisations pour des cadeaux de noël personnalisés ) qui fait tous le charme de votre chaine. Je regarde toujours avec un grand plaisir. Merci et à bientôt.
Just found your site and love your builds. Your humour & honesty is appreciated too. We need more people like you, you and Tamar could make a great team ..ll Thks [ from UK ]
I make growth charts with my CNC. I coat the pine with sanding sealer first, let it dry, then do the carvings. I brush on water based paint, and I think it's thicker than oil based spray paint. After that's dry, I sand it all down. There's still minute amounts of bleed through around the lines and numbers, but it's barely noticeable. Once that's done, I spray 2 coats of lacquer. I like your router jig for the lines. If you can incorporate an indexing pin to sit in each previously carved line, you won't have to mark out any lines, and they'll all be perfectly spaced apart by 1".
To fix the paint issues you had with the ruler: First spray it with clear coat to prevent bleed out. If you have any wide voids, sand the clearcoat w/ 220 but for this project, it's probably not necessary. Then paint by hand with a fine paintbrush and any black craft paint. Then when you sand the top, get one of those wax sandpaper cleaning sticks.. these are like $5 and will clean all that paint gunk off the sandpaper. These steps are more labor-intensive but would give a better result.
I like your bottle holder Marie! Just a suggestion. If you were to put one keyhole slot near the top and one near the bottom, both of them in the centre of the board, the mounting screws could both be put into the same stud. No need for a drywall anchor and it would be much easier to get the wine rack plumb. John Jensen from British Columbia.
Great video. I've watched several videos on making a growth chart and your method of using the router is one of the best if not the best of what I've watched. Thank you!
I have a solution for the paint issue that you had on the ruler. I do a lot of CNC work on bourbon barrel lids and had the same problem. I found the Marsh's Spray stencil Ink works so much better. It dries much faster and sands off quite easily.
To eliminate the black paint from bleeding spay it first with a couple heavy coats of shellac. When dry spray black and sand off leftover shellac and black paint.
Marie ... Thanks for all the great ideas. The wine rack and growth chart are on my list for holiday presents. My niece has a 4 year old son and another on the way. The growth chart is a perfect gift. As for filling the growth mark line ... what about using painter's tape and filling them in like you did with the stencils?
Great video. thanks for posting. Always frustrating when things don`t go quite as planned. After noting your challenges with the growth chart I think i would lay down painters tape before doing the routing and then pull it off after applying the paint. Keep up the great work
Probably a good idea. I would consider using another type of paint (maybe crafts paint like I used for the stencils) and apply to the cracks so there is less to sand away.
Great gift ideas I'm definitely making the game one as well as a few other one's. Great idea for the keyhole slot jig been trying to figure one out know I have one as well as the calendar one . Keep up the great videos
The pear trivet looks like a great candidate to use half laps to join the supports and or use a router to create housing joints to accept the supports. Love your work and your videos! Nice to see a fellow Canadian on UA-cam!
I just found your channel tonight. Excellent!!! You are very “Clever”!!! Love your projects. So much to learn, so little time. Cheers Wilber & Margaret SC. 👴🏻🧑🦳
I think I'd make a simple jig for lining up the wine rack holders. Otherwise, given my luck, I'd be off a bit and given the design I think it would be painfully obvious.
All of these are amazing!! And thank you so much for not doing everything perfectly. I’m a new woodworker and actually nothing is perfect! But I push on anyway.
Your video inspired me! I have made 12 Large and 12 Small (PDF printed at 80%) and will be giving them as gifts in "Pears in Pairs" ;) Have a wonderful holiday season!
You said "I got into the groove" when using that router bit. Ha! Nice pun. Great ideas here. Your instruction is spot on (not too wordy like many others). Thank you
I recommend wood and CA glue on anything like a trivet, because when it gets hot, the CA glue will fail. Maybe not the first time, but it will fail, eventually.
I saw this trick somewhere that can work for the growth chart. Before you spray it with the paint color, spray it with a sealer. Let it dry and then go with the color. The sealer should prevent the paint from bleeding into the wood. I think I saw it on a channel with colored epoxy working.
I worked for Princess Auto for a short while.. and never met a bunch of bigots like those people. I hated my experience there and will never go back. I hate to hear of anyone supporting that business
I see you experienced the paint bleed on the ruler. When I made mine, I sprayed the cut areas with clear coat spray paint. I used it to basically seal the edges to reduce the paint bleed. Sanding all the black paint off still sucked though.
One of the tricks is to use different bases for lines and main surface. For example: water based paint for the main surface and oil based for the lines. They will not stick to each other and can be easily removed.
Love the growth chart. I want to make some for my kids soon and your jigs were the missing piece I couldn't figure out how to do. For the paint leaching maybe try sealing it first with something like a dewaxed shellac. You can still stain over top of it but it might help with the bleeding.

Me encantaron tus vídeos, Ojalá puedes subir siempre tus vídeos con subtítulos en español.
As a beginner, I can say these ideas are awesome! Each one is achievable, even with my limited skills and tools. Thank you!
Wouldn’t trust just CA glue on the trivet. It should be reinforced with nails

Ah! Should've watched that first!

I love these projects, and I love the keyhole jig you made for the router!
Awesome! Thought that might come in handy for some.
Just loved the wine rack... so simple and yet so elegant.
Much appreciated
Really appreciate the variety of projects you shared!
Thank you 😊

Haha 5'7" in real life! And yeah I can see them coming... but come on, the ruler looks way cooler in feet than it would in cm!

Merci beaucoup Vlad! La loyauté est une belle qualité que j'apprécie beaucoup 😊

Really neat ideas, Marie. No hexagons? Maybe the trivet.

These are Brilliantly simple ideas

Thank you for the great ideas
You bet!

As for filling the growth mark line ... what about using painter's tape and filling them in like you did with the stencils?
Thanks! Taping all those lines just seems like a lot of work... and a lot of tape!
Excellent projects for gifts 🎁 well done 👏 😁👍
Thank you
Nice little projects. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice , you are a very good creative wood (craft) person. Stay safe and I enjoy your content!
Great ideas Marie. This may seem like a dumb question, but where do you get your poplar around Montreal?
Home depot 🤷♀️
@@DIYMontreal Thanks. I guess that I need to look closer next time that I’m there.
@@jimwilson2738 I've listed out all my local lumber sources here: www.diymontreal.com/about/faqs/
@@DIYMontreal This is excellent. Thanks so much Marie.
Great job! I'm impressed by the quality of your work. How did you create your zero clearance guide on the miter saw? Thanks!
Thanks! It's zero clearance tape from Fastcap.
Thanks!
Inches???? I thought Canadians used the metric system. You know, like civilised people.
Cool. Those are real nice ideas, and a great presentation. Thanks for sharing.

These were excellent gift ideas that most of us should be able to make. Thanks for the video.
Sangat kreatif menggunakan bahan seadanya hasil.woooo. slamdari # masjabrikdiy
Great gift ideas I'm definitely making the game one as well as a few other one's. Great idea for the keyhole slot jig been trying to figure one out know I have one as well as the calendar one . Keep up the great videos
Cool! Glad it helped with the keyholes too!
I loved the pear and measuring board. Great job amd thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Great video, thank you for sharing
Some great ideas there, particularly like the pear trivet 👍.
Excellent video. Thank you.

😍😍😍😍will you marrie me? Saludos desde México I like your hands👍👍👍
I absolutely love your ideas. Thankyou.I'm going to try some. Do you have any ideas about honey bees, hives, etc.
great ideas and video, thanks for sharing,
Great job super ideas thank you
These are great ideas for gifts! Love them all, especially the pear trivet and wine rack. Thanks for sharing!!
Hii sist 😊🤝🤝
Another great video ! 😊
Love these ideas, but it seems like the measurements for the wine rack, specifically the location to still the hole, doesn't match up right
Very nice work on these projects. And, Congratulations on your Award. Well done.
Thank you!
Makes pear shaped trivet, doesn't use pear wood. Smh
before spraying the black paint you should have sprayed clear
I just found your channel tonight. Excellent!!! You are very “Clever”!!! Love your projects. So much to learn, so little time. Cheers Wilber & Margaret SC. 👴🏻🧑🦳
nice ideas thank you
You bet
Wonderful gift ideas!
Try using flat black paint next time. I find it easier to sand off the excess.
I think I'd make a simple jig for lining up the wine rack holders. Otherwise, given my luck, I'd be off a bit and given the design I think it would be painfully obvious.
Is it alright to use your design of wall wine holder I thought I use it as DVD or CD holder.
All of these are amazing!! And thank you so much for not doing everything perfectly. I’m a new woodworker and actually nothing is perfect! But I push on anyway.

can I apply water based urethane varnish over acrylic paint?
Yes, very good idea. 💡 🙂
THANKS!
Nice gift ideas Marie! Thanks for sharing them with us!💖👍😎JP
We play that mölkky game every summer. I'm finnish.
Love the use of jigs! Another sweet tutorial. Thanks for the great content.
Hello

I recommend wood and CA glue on anything like a trivet, because when it gets hot, the CA glue will fail. Maybe not the first time, but it will fail, eventually.
Wood glue will also fail if it gets hot enough. CA glue is just more susceptible.
Cutting dimensions for molkky game?

love your videos, you are one of my favorite youtubers. I like that you leave links to everything you use in your videos. Keep up the great work!!!!
Gosh I Love Everything You’ve Made! Nice Work! 😊

So beautiful 😍
great video

Great tip. But yeah, wich there was a better way than sanding thick layers of paint. Maybe hand painting line by line 🤷♀️
One of the tricks is to use different bases for lines and main surface. For example: water based paint for the main surface and oil based for the lines. They will not stick to each other and can be easily removed.
molto apprezzabili i sottotitoli in tante lingue , e infatti ho apprezzato quelli in italiano :)
I love the wine rack you made, what lengths did you use to create the wine bottle rest..? :)
I already have a gift list for Christmas, thanks
Great ideas! Would love to have your workshop! Or just be your neighbor. 😬
Awesome woodworking gift ideas. You are very creative!
great video...you explain the process so good..thanks

Stand, pear, cute, but you can make a wall lamp (sconce) out of it.
Gostei muito das suas idéias.
Parabéns! Ganhou uma inscrição.
Great ideas for projects! Can you re-use those stencils or once you use them they're useless?
Interesting ideas, but it's not very good to put the bottles of wine upside down.
Great video. Good balance of verbal instruction and visual reference.
Excelentes ideas, gracias por compartir
I love it (all of them) God Loves you so do I
Thanks
