Some tricks I've learned. If you have an amp that sounds bad mic'd up, but sounds good where you're standing, put the mic where your head is, and point it at the amp. With DI guitar, agreed it's a sin. But but, what I find is that the primary thing a DI doesn't do is roll off highs. I dont mean like a gentle roll a tone knob does, I mean a severe LPF. Roll off at like 7k with a 12+db/oct slope and it'll start to sound more amp-y and get rid of the annoying nasty shit.
@@travisraab it worked for me! Recorded my favorite project like that. I also had a close mic for safety/because I'm an insecure engineer tied to tradition haha. And of course like all good projects it's unfinished and unreleased haha
Thanks Travis, I'm a big fan of your philosophies and you are a solid musician. I'm building up my home studio (and instruments) again after 15 years of "moving around" and my approach is to buy cheap instruments/gear and only buy something when I've needed it 5+ times and it's becoming part of my work/style/process. My most expensive guitar was $199 (the Donner acoustic). I've owned Musicman Subs in the past so I know how much of a "step down" these instruments might seem. I love MXL mics. Great mics. Super inexpensive. And they sound amazing. I did a demo of a Vanguard mic once. Came in a fancy wood box and everything. I think it was around $600. I A/B’d it next to my MXL 990 (that I got used for $50) and my ears couldn’t tell the difference. I sent the Vanguard back.
Just bought a new MXL990 with cable and pop filter for $30, scored a 2nd Gen Scarlett solo for $60.
