    I'm just starting out and it's really refreshing to see an established VO artist who doesn't condescend to (or outright denigrate) those of us for whom a USB mic is the most practical option. Of course I hope to do well enough to upgrade to an XLR in time, but it's a relief to know that I'm not sabotaging my future in VO by starting out with a USB mic. Thanks so much for all your practical advice & personal insight.

      There’s just something very personable and caring about you. It no doubt comes across in your voice overs and it’s the reason for your success. If I am going to listen to the same voice on an audiobook for 10 hours plus, yours is the kind of voice I would want to listen to. Much success to you.

    Hi Angela! You are such an inspiration. I'm getting into voice over to help an author turn his self-published book into an audiobook (for free, as he is not widely known, but his text could literally help us avoid epigenetic disasters unfolding now, which many modern humans don't even realize is unfolding- information required to ensure next generation vigor keeps happening). I will continue to watch your uploads closely. By the way, one reason I suspect you are seeing this success is in part because people can actually hear in your voice (and see in your uploads) the fact that you personally have solid epigenetic expression. Of course it matters, and impacts lives deeply. Just ask any number of folks not as blessed with intelligence, beauty, or strength...as an educator and former scientist I can say with some conviction that the information in the book I am hoping to assist into an audible format is crucial to us all for helping prevent things like covid from becoming the new norm. Since you have so graciously shared, I will do the same: the book is "A New Path" by Arthur Haines. Oh, and in case you or anyone you know comes down with covid, check out the testimony from Dr. Kory to the Senate earlier this month. It is on UA-cam and is under 9 minutes, and shows unequivocally that ivermectin (a common/safe medicine for deworming both humans and livestock) totally OBLITERATES covid, and can be purchased for next to nothing at Tractor Supply stores for horses, without prescription. Many people have taken just that safely, and I suspect the vastly lower price is simply due to it being less precise in amount. I.e. .measuring out a dose to the nearest thousandth of a gram is more costly than going to the nearest tenth. Just my two cents. Again thanks for your own contributions to the lives and opportunities of others in these offerings!

      Wow, thank you so much for sharing and for your kind words! I would also agree that you are embarking on an important journey yourself, how kind of you to assist your author in these unprecedented times. I am so glad to help and to inspire! Video is slightly out of sync - perhaps by a quarter second - just enough to be noticeable.
    The downside for the NUCs or other small form factor PCs is the cooling. Many of these PCs don't have adequate cooling so you _will_ hear the fan noise - so avoid putting anywhere near your recording setup. Larger PCs, while bulky - they have much more robust cooling and you can normally control the fan speed to provide just enough cooling to keep the PC working but still very quiet.
    For choosing a mic - I have given up on going to the stores. If you can find the money - narrow down your selection to a handful that most likely will work - then order them all and try them out. Return the ones that don't make the cut. Mics are a personal choice since they all sound differently on everyone's voice. Keep the return window and terms in mind. It is more hassle but still cheaper than spending money on a mic only to realize it clashes with your voice or requires a lot of EQ work.
    The _type_ of mic you select can impact which interface you can use. If you stick with condensers, then most interfaces will be sufficient. However, if you go with an dynamic, you'll need an interface capable to pushing a lot of clean gain - which is unusual for "budget" interfaces. My $200 SSL2 can do it, but my old Scarlett cannot.
    For recording software, keep in mind that the free/cheap options (Audacity) use a destructive workflow. You _can_ use the Undo function but once you save your file, all the changes are _baked_ into the audio file. The more advanced DAW (recording/editing) software like Audition or Reaper use a non-destructive workflow that allows you to go back in time if you made a mistake - even after saving. If you use a destructive editor, just save lots of intermediate versions of your audio file as you work so you can go back if needed. After editing, I will always save the original (unedited) version and the final but delete any intermediate files.

You do great job of supplying information for those of us trying to navigate the beginners pathway to finding our place in the recording world. For many like myself, the task of editing and production of a product that's worthy of submitting is far more than the audition itself. Finding the right DAW and using it affectively is a substantial component. Thank you so much!

    Another great video, Angela. A few more questions, if you don't mind: If you have a noisy computer, can't that hum be filtered out with your DAW? You didn't say anything in this video about the space your recording equipment is going to be located in. The "box" that you're recording in needs to be treated somehow to absorb sound rather than reflect it. And lastly, you mentioned in another video that you get customers from several platforms like ACX, fiverr, and Upwork. Do you do exclusively book narrations on all of these platforms, or do you do other types of VO work?

    • @VoiceOverAngela
      @VoiceOverAngela  3 роки тому +4

      Hi David, thank you for your question. if you have a noisy computer, you can filter out some of the noise but I have found that some frequencies are harder to remove than others and end up making your recording sound horrible. I would remove any noise from your space before recording. I do all types of VO work, commercials, telephony, podcast intros, video games etc. :)

    Hi Angela. Thank you so much for this video and all the others you have gifted us voice-over entrepreneurs. I have a question about enunciation. I have been practicing recording and noticed that my "s's" are very distinct is there a way to dial down the "slur" using an effect or is this something that just needs to be practiced. Also wondering about the "tin" effect that I can hear in my audio, is this a mic issue? Thank you.

    • @VoiceOverAngela
      @VoiceOverAngela  2 роки тому

      Thank you for watching! Sibilance is another issue voice actors face, this is the "s" sound. You can either teach yourself to be a little less sibilant when you speak, use a de-ess plug in or effect in your DAW. As for the tinny sound, this is usually caused by using a bit too much noise reduction, or echo in your recording space.

      Hi! Thanks for watching! At the very beginning, I started at the living room table. I quickly discovered there was too much noise there. So I had to move to a storage closet so I could control the room noise. Another option is to build a portable studio with PVC pipe and hanging moving blankets. Whatever makes it work :)

    Sorry for coming late to the party, but what is your position to recording on portable audio recorder (e.g. Zoom) rather than a computer. I've done some of that, but see most people advocating for recording to a computer. I thought using a portable audio recorder would me easier to manage and eliminate fan noise.

      I know some that do, but in temporary situations, like during a studio build or while traveling but not used full time. I could see the benefits, but could you be sure the sound of your space won't change? I think that's the main concern with these.
