The tragic true ending to this scenario that would be the 'best worst ending' would be that you go passively not attacking, and then in the last moment, you choose attack, but aim at yourself. They weren't scared you were going to hurt someone else, they were scared you were going to hurt yourself.
That's how I would've made this anyway for a definitive 'real ending' be that you ultimately stop whatever it is that's controlling you by killing yourself.
