I believe the Royal Enfield Scram 411 may just be the ultimate freedom machine/ explorer. It's got oodles of character, great fun around the narrow country lanes, and if need be you can cut down a grass track or byway and do some green laning or off-roading!
It's a rugged feeling bike that gives real connection between man and machine. In this video I go into detail about how this Motorcycle rides, the handling, engine, brakes, off road ability and more.
Coming up I have a Honda CL500 now in the garage and I will be doing a comparison video between the two!

Owned mine for well over a year.
A few annoying niggles but dealer always up for helping resolve.
Take it from me ..this bike doesn't need more power.
For back road riding its nothing short of brilliant.
    Comments regarding exhaust.
    Its called AUTOSOL.
A new model for me will spoil a massively underrated machine.
The old man actually sold this to me last year.
    5foot 6.
The best riding position out there.
May even buy another one while stocks last.
It will get the progress treatment and like most things it won't be for the better.

Everyone is anticipating the Himalayan 450, which will probably have a scram version. But RE are also planning on a Scram 440, which is essentially the Scram 411 with a big bore kit from the factory. Not sure what other features it will get (like the new display that links to your phone so you can use your own map software, rather than the Google connected navigation thing on it at the moment) or if it will be basically the same as the current model. It will get a bit more juice to comfortably go on the motorway and make it a better all rounder I think.
Also there is the Scram 650 coming which is a modified interceptor, called the "Bear".
Personally I'm looking at the scram 440 the most, as it will be a slightly more powerful and refined version of the old Himalayan platform I hope. The 450 looks good but is adding extra tech and moving towards the current mainstream of adventure bikes, which is not what the Himalayan platform was popular for I think.

I've owned a Scram since August and have ridden almost 3000 km. This motorcycle has charm and stands out from the crowd of other bikes. It brings a smile to my face and it has what is called an addictive factor. Anyone who can screw screws does all the maintenance themselves and saves a lot of money, no need to unscrew any plastic lumps. Often in life less is more. My other three bikes are currently resting. Greetings from
    Germany

This bike is a dream. I chose it based on a little research, gut instinct, and looks. I’ve been driving it daily for over a year and it’s always a dream, a blast, and leaves me wanting to ride it more. What an incredible deal from RE. If it fits your needs, it can’t be beat…for what it is made for; getting around the city and country in varying road conditions, blasting through traffic and really experiencing the ride. Old skool. Awesome.

If you want something that never goes wrong and goes well, get a Scram 411 and put a decent exhaust and air filter on it and jobs a good one. I got my mechanic to re map mine so its quick and smooth.

I own one, and what you say is spot on. It’s low tech, light, economical, it rides and handles absolutely beautifully, it’s extremely nimble and you can really throw it about and zip around corners. The lack of power actually adds to the fun, although it does have just enough to cope with life on the motorway. It’s simplicity and rawness are its very best points.
I wonder if the new 450 version manages to retain all these things ?

I bought mine at the end of August, ex demo, ridiculously low price. I was umming and arrring about the Honda Cl500 and waiting for the Triumph but at the end of the day the price said "buy me". I love It. It's great on rough roads as well as main roads. I took It on a dual carriageway and It was happy enough at 120km/h, very windy day so didn't try any faster. Great bike!

I like the honest review. I've owned mine for over a year now and I still enjoy riding it every time I get on it. Its not a bike to go mach 3 on... its a bike that allows the rider to have total freedom and take in the surroundings. It'll suit riders who have come through the other side of owning big/fast machines and appreciate riding at a more tranquil pace. The bike can handle most environments and its a good addition to any small collection.

"Cows love to lick Royal Enfields"" Thanks for the laugh mate!! Ride safe. Cheers from NZ. The Scram is cool btw...well, I think so. Like many, I've watched Itchy Boots trying out the new bike, and without it being a review, it obviously has twice (or a great deal more) the power. And it sounds sweet. But we don't know the price yet. And anyway, it's horses for courses right? The Scram has a cool factor. It really does, and it's backed up by buyers who love it. I'm glad both bikes exist. :)

I've had my scram for over a year and ride all year round in the US. I added a windscreen for the cold days and it makes quite a difference. I'm a 5'6" female rider and the weight isn't an issue and the suspension compresses to allow for full confidence having at least 1 foot down at stops. With heavy clutch work I noticed my forearm getting tired but I installed Hitchcock's adjustable levers which look great and bring the levers a bit closer for better comfort. I wish for a little more power honestly but only when I'm riding with my friends who have speed twin 900s.

I had one of these on loan whilst my Interceptor was in for a service. I only rode on local roads mainly town and some country roads and it was perfectly adequate. I only noticed the low power a could of times when it couldn’t out accelerate a white van, once you realise that then you are ok. Physically it’s quite big, it’s larger than my Interceptor so it suits you being tall. I would have the Interceptor over this but if I had £4500 budget then the 411 would be a great choice, but I think the Hunter runs it close if you stick to roads. Like the videos keep them coming.

The 450 Himalayan is out and running around India with Itchy Boots riding it. Will they make a 450 Scram? Probably. The seat is that way because the bike has a lot of suspension travel. The only way to get the seat low enough for normal sized people is to scoop it out. A flat seat might be good for oversized people but it would kill 80% of sales. I rode the modified version they called the FT411 in the Royal Enfield Slide School flat track course! Great fun and highly recommended.

I love it and I think it is even an alternativ for a car in urban areas. 24PS is OK but sometimes I feel it could be a bit more. But so I save some local taxes.

I rather this 411 , thank you . The new 450 cc is water cooled and flat out performance goes up , noise goes down with water jackets damping that some . The cooling improves combustion temperatures especially at higher revolutions . More performance cost money and weight , when it's good already .
Price on this one will stay where it is too but they won't have any trouble selling remaining stock .
    Good cast , I enjoyed it .

Since it's not an actual off roader or dirt bike and i personally don't intend to take it there for all its life - just need it when the routes go bad during my regular commute or go light off-roading it once a while for fun, i wish there was an alloy wheel trim. I saw a youtube shorts that said an alloy wheel version was spotted, I'm thinking maybe I'll see if the rumours are true.
I have a meteor and i work about 200 miles away from home and go home every other month or so and the road between is not all smooth, all in the hills, I'm really leaning towards buying this one as it seems to be an all-rounder.

I certainly want to try the new one, but I fear it will lose some of the amazing charm of this 411 and the increased power of the new merely detract from something so special.
It's not the greatest on dual roads, but will just keep with all A road traffic but the foolish, and on back lane roads (I'm in Cornwall) it's a joy, a hoot and smiles all the way.

Following many glowing reviews online, had a go on a used Scram at a local RE dealer and was astonished by how crap it was. Slower than slow, seat was uncomfortable and pushed you forward, engine lacking in character, suspension not as compliant as it should be and generally felt like a slightly bigger Chinese 125. Glad I had a test ride as I'd have been very disappointed after handing over any money. Rode an Interceptor and that was in a different league, despite still feeling a bit underdog

Where it wins is that for 125cc running at 10-12 BHP Chinese bike money, you get a similarly built bike but with more HP. One thing, you mentioned, you would change the exhaust, well I bet if it looked like the piece of scrap that originally is called the exhaust, you would be demanding your cash back, and rightly so. I’m one of the guys waiting for the 450 version to show up. Word I got from a UK bike reviewer was that the Himalayan 450 and the Roadster 450 would be first off the assembly line with the Scram 450 showing up in 2025. I hope he was wrong. I’m pushing 72 with a very short stick and waiting is no longer my strong suit. Why 450 ? Aside from the fact that a 500 single is my dream bike. My nearest city is two hours away at 110 mph, roughly 70 mph, and the drivers here are impatient. Why the Scram ? I want a street bike that has some off-road capabilities not an off-road bike with some street abilities. So I wait until the big city bike show in February to see the Himalayan and determine if waiting another year is feasible. By-the-by, great review, I always look forward to reading what you and the Old Man are about. Cheers from Canada.

A good review, Mr Darcy. The Scram is good for the price, and it’s an ideal bike for tinkering with; easy to work on and to modify. There are also alternative camshafts to increase power by about 20%. People may think the new Triumph 400X scrambler will be worth waiting for, but at £1300 more and less suspension travel.

Royal Enfield’s best kept secret. A moderate displacement bike with a good sized frame for larger riders. Why wait for the liquid cooled 451? This bike is mechanically simpler. RE will likely go through some quality growing pains initially with their first liquid cooled offering. The 411 is just a Swiss army knife type of bike. I was going to pass on this bike. Thought I would be buying a classic or meteor. Then I RODE this one. It just blew everything else away in terms of grin factor.

Loved Your review and You have really given a true account 👌
I sold mine in June after a year and 7000 miles.
I loved every moment on it, the only time I didn’t enjoy was the few occasions I had to get from A to B on motorways and dual carriageways for prolonged periods of time… it does require an extra gear and power to negate gradients where it becomes frustrating to lose speed.
Otherwise it’s real exhilarating to throw around at its maximum limit, so much fun😅
I am almost Your height, the saddle needs to be flat, I found myself pushing back and upwards, sometimes I even took to sitting on the pillion seat to give my cahoonahs a break and stretch my legs. I have a short body and long legs.
So I traded in for a Interceptor… not quite as much fun or bite in the bends on lanes, nor is the handlebar reach as comfortable, I have ordered some angled handlebar risers.
The interceptor is a better all-rounder, at least for me!
However I do miss the character of the scram.
If it’s fun around the country lanes, mild green-laning and city riding, it’s awesome!! 👌😊
Keep up the reviews, You are doing great 👍
