Another great video! I just picked this one up, looks like a tremendous upgrade to the old B-17, which I had back in the day. I probably started 20 or 25 times to try and get a crew through their 25 missions and none of them made it, I'll be interested to see how crews do in this new version. It would make a great game for a convention if you got 18 players and all flew the same raid.
Just ordered this based on your review. I play tons of solitaire games (love The Hunters, the Leader series, etc) as well as have a huge relationship to military aviation (currently at 20+ years active duty AF, in an organization that excavates old aircraft crashes around the world looking for remains). Anyway, this reminds me a lot ofB-29, also by Legion Games. In that, I couldn’t get into it. I made a crew that I was emotionally attached to (staffed from favorite tv characters) but the missions had such a high fail rate (mirrored on the abysmal early PTO bombing runs) which ultimately led me to feel like the game played itself. I never had any choices. You received missions based on die rolls, every step of the way: flt path, weather, enemy, were all random rolls. You would get all the way to your target (if lucky) and then your bombs would land way off target. After several missions I gave up. It WAS memorable though. My crew failed their bombing run but had taken some flight control damage from AAA fire. When they were landing, the modifier from the rudder damage caused them to crash in a ball of fire, killing all souls on board. I hope this has more choices to make.
I made my own remake if B17 and play on my computer using VASSAL. It was interesting to research and gave me a lot of entertainment. I added B24s and night raids with Lancaster during the battle of Berlin.
Thank you for the great review. I had never heard of the game till I came across your video. It makes me want to purchase a copy of the game for myself.
Nice, looks like it replaces AH B17 Queen of the sky. One thing I could not discern was if there is only one attack on enemy aircraft or is there what I would call a final fire by the B17 crew from other areas of the plane as the enemy aircraft zooms by.
There are rules for doing final fire, I believe. That's the nice part, there's a ton of optional rules you can bolt on or off depending on how crunchy you want it to be.
@Alexander: I just watched this in 2024 - wow look at young sexy you mate! I about to get this out of the back of the cupboard for replay. Looking forward to it thanks for the refresher. Just watched the Apple show so I'm primed for the game.
I give up! Where is table 7.13 to determine the condition of a German fighter pilot after one of my gunners damaged his FW190? As per die roll 7 on table 5-7A.
I’m brand new to war gaming and I’m looking for a solitaire game that doesn’t take up a ton of space, fairly easy to play for someone new, and doesn’t have a big footprint. I’ve played Twilight Struggle with my wife and we love it but that’s about as advanced as I’ve gotten. I really want something solitaire though.
Ranger from Omega Games, Silent Victory from CONSIM, Fields of Fire from GMT, and A Wing and a Prayer from Lock 'N' Load Publishing. Although there's many, many more. Check out the introductory solo wargame video I did a while back: A lot of the games on that list fall into this category.
I haven't played The hunters but have played Silent Victory. The games are different, but there is a lot of similarities in the style and the experience. It's the narrative that comes from the charts and tables that makes the game engaging.
@@ThePlayersAid Accents are also different in every region in the US. I was born out west in Colorado, raised in Utah, live in Wisconsin. People in my area now say I still sound like a cowboy lol.

I'm from Southampton, in the very South of England. I have, however, been living in the US for 12 years. But it might sound German because I lived in Berlin and a couple other places in the east for 2 years when I was 18. I used to be fluent in German, but I like to think that at least my pronunciation is on point!

And then I watched the rest of the video where you talk about just that....🙊
such an addicting game. every time I get hit in the bomb bay, I literally hold my breath as I roll to see if the bombs were set off!

A nice in-depth review. It's good to see so many new solo games coming through.

Have you looked at Warfighter?
Have you tried the YB-40 campaign? Does is differ quite a bit, since it was 'designed' as a gunship of sorts?
About to start YB-40 campaign here soon. Naming my plane Heavy Metal Queen with some interesting crew members.

I wish they would remake Patton's Best.
Earl of Doncaster and ambush
Which other solitaire wargames would you recommend that 'tell a story' like this does?

Have a look at Combat! by Compass Games.
Interceptor Ace I've heard is great.
Anyone have any idea how this compares to DVG’s B-17 leader?
Very different.
how does it compare to The Hunters

Could you tell me where you’re from? I can’t place your accent. I feel like it keeps shifting between American, Australian, and British?
New Zealander?!
I'm English, but I married and moved to the USA eight years almost a decade ago, so my accent is all over the place.
The Players Aid ah that makes sense. It’s very interesting I’ve never heard an accent like it! Thanks for making the review too by the way 👍

Am I wrong, or is this a complete 100% remake of B-17 Queen of the Skies by Avalon Hill? How can they legally do that?
Avalon Hill no longer exist for one thing. And ....they don’t copy the title only the idea.
and queen of the skies' rulebook was released in public domain
