Mojave, California, USA (22 Feb 2019): Today, Virgin Galactic conducted its fifth powered test flight and second space flight of its commercial SpaceShipTwo, VSS Unity.
In its fifth supersonic rocket powered test flight, Virgin Galactic reached space for the second time today in the skies above Mojave CA. Spaceship VSS Unity reached its highest speed and altitude to date and, for the first time, carried a third crew member on board along with research payloads from the NASA Flight Opportunities program.
This space flight means Chief Pilot Dave Mackay and co-pilot Michael “Sooch” Masucci become commercial astronauts and the 569th and 570th humans in space. Beth Moses, Virgin Galactic’s Chief Astronaut Instructor, flew as the third crew member in a first, live evaluation of cabin dynamics. She is the 571st person to fly to space and the first woman to fly on board a commercial spaceship.
In addition to this element of envelope expansion, VSS Unity flew higher and faster than ever before, as its world record-holding hybrid rocket motor propelled the spaceship at Mach 3.04 to an apogee of 295,007ft.
The crew enjoyed extraordinary views of Earth from the black skies of space and, during several minutes of weightlessness while the pilots “feathered” the spaceship in preparation for a Mach 2.7 re-entry, Beth floated free to complete a number of cabin evaluation test points. The human validation of data previously collected via sensors, and the live testing of other physical elements of the cabin interior, are fundamental to the provision of a safe but enjoyable customer experience.
The glide back home was followed by a smooth runway landing and a rapturous reception from the crowd on the flight line, which included staff and some of Virgin Galactic’s 600 Future Astronaut customers.
Chief Pilot Dave Mackay, a born and bred Scotsman as well as an ex-RAF test pilot and Virgin Atlantic Captain, led his crew of newly qualified astronauts from VSS Unity accompanied by a kilted piper.
Today’s flight notched several additional firsts for the industry: The flight was the first time that a non-pilot flew on board a commercial spaceship to space, and it was the first time that a crew member floated freely without restraints in weightlessness in space onboard a commercial spaceship; it was the first time that three people flew to space on a commercial spaceship, and Dave Mackay became the first Scottish-born astronaut (Brian Binnie, who was raised in Scotland, flew to space in 2004).
Addressing colleagues and guests Dave said: “Beth, Sooch and I just enjoyed a pretty amazing flight which was beyond anything any of us has ever experienced. It was thrilling yet smooth and nicely controlled throughout with a view at the top, of the Earth from space, which exceeded all our expectations. I am incredibly proud of my crew and of the amazing teams at Virgin Galactic and The Spaceship Company for providing a vehicle and an operation which means we can fly confidently and safely. For the three of us today this was the fulfillment of lifelong ambitions, but paradoxically is also just the beginning of an adventure which we can’t wait to share with thousands of others.”
Sir Richard Branson said: “Flying the same vehicle safely to space and back twice in a little over two months, while at the same time expanding the flight envelope, is testament to the unique capability we have built up within the Virgin Galactic and The Spaceship Company organizations. I am immensely proud of everyone involved. Having Beth fly in the cabin today, starting to ensure that our customer journey is as flawless as the spaceship itself, brings a huge sense of anticipation and excitement to all of us here who are looking forward to experiencing space for ourselves. The next few months promise to be the most thrilling yet”

I love the evolution of flight on the back of the plane. Amazing detail
Close enough to space for me. I’d love to ride this. I remember seeing a short bio about Burt Rutan. As I recall he got the idea from a shuttlecock. The plan worked and he won the XPRIZE. All I need now is to win the lottery and I’ll plunk down my deposit for a ride.
This flight is the coolest thing I've ever seen in my life. Seeing that rocket drop from the plane and rip straight vertical is a an engineering beauty.
That's Burt Rutan's knowledge taking it to the stars!
I felt that 5 second drop before the booster kicked in 😬
Good Job!
Looks more stable than previous flights
Steve Austin was doing this in the 70's. I used to watch him on tv
круто! Мои поздравления. надеюсь у вас все получиться, желаю успеха и SpaceX и BlueOrigin. Любое начинание и прогресс в этой области только радует.
Красавчики!
They got lots of spew bags per passenger on these flights!!
I hear the pipes a, calling me!
Awesome
Is it a high altitude aeroplane, or is it a spacecraft that goes beyond the earth's atmosphere and then returns to earth? Either way, it's good to see aerospacespace exploration back in the news.
It doesn't even go to space just really high
How is this test diffrent from the last one?
Where are the flat earthers?
Hahahahaha
The X15 was using this technology 65 years ago. An advancement in science ? Seriously ?
If the American gov and NASA hadn't squandered years of development time on the useless space shuttle programme, maybe mankind would be a little further ahead than we are now. The truth is that, yes the X15 concept is similar to Virgin Galactic, and thats because its the best and most cost effective method of currently getting through the atmosphere. NASA knew this, the original space shuttle design was much more similar to the X15, it was political and military interfering that required a bulky/heavy vehicle that NASA ended up building. Solid fuelled vertical launched rockets are a thing of the past, too expensive and require too much refurbishment to re-use. Its slow progress but space travel has to be done in baby steps, you loose lives, you loose funding and potentially the whole project.

Great company
awesome! Do they give advance notice for these flights. Id like to go out there when they fly.
efonefiddy of course! They’ll be launching tourists this year.
Planeboy 2520 do u think they will? Theyve said that for many years i feel. I hope youre right
What about chad interstellar?
Death Trap.
it's a suicide rap, we gotta get out while we're young!
@@billberry183 no surprise sir Richard head hasn't been in that thing yet!!!!
Space...?
Or high altitude flight ?
I know what ya mean, I would'nt call it space, more like a high altitude flight. All that fuss and cheering, mugs.
@Brian 8chison the USA considers space at 264,000 feet whereas other agencies set it at around 330,000 feet.
The thermospere starts at 80 km, this vehicle has flown as high as 89 km. That's close enough to space for me.
@Mycel To be fair, the first 6 missions of the space shuttle had a 1 in 9 chance of a catastrophic failure.
Why cant we see the whole flight please ...Spacex show the lot ..thanks ..
@Bob Loblaw great will be awesome footage ..
It's not space x it's VIRGIN GALACTIC lol
@@jupitorman yes i know ...im asking to show full footage in future as Spacex does ...you ok , you got that ??..jeeeez...😪
Тук тук кто там новое видео!
I think the launch vehicle refuels the ramjet in mid air to give it enough fuel to land safely.
You cant be more wrong. Less thinking and more reading ;)
Definitely a cool flight but I'm sure it'd be worth it, just one ticket costs $250,000 which is nearly 10x more expensive than a ticket to the fanciest first class suites around.
I wonder if the mothership has ejection seats, that big fucker just looks like it would fold in half for no reason.
So you figured me out only way l will see the curvature of the earth is to piss someone off into giving me a ride up there.
Тук-тук кто там новое видео!
Quite a feat
No heat shield needed?
@josh langley Then it isn't going into space.
It's not coming down fast enough to require it.
😁😄
They were just flying in circles the earth is flat!
They’re rather annoying, but necessary. Why necessary? Because they’re pissing everyone off so bad these days, they’re actually pushing as hard as they can to get them up there to see the curvature for themselves. Remember...the Earth was never truly considered flat as most knew it to be round, but by pissing off the higher ups, they finally sent a few ships to the West, instead of East. This made travel to the Americas much cheaper. Here we are again. Earth flat... I wanna see for myself that it’s round. See?
Besides, if you looked at Earth from mars with a telescope, it would appear very flat. If you looked at a basketball from across the room with the same telescope.....it would appear extremely mountainous. So, in a way... Earth is very flat. Flatter than most planets in the solar system.
I DONT GET IT. HOW CAN THAT THING HANDLE RE-ENTRY???????
BECAUSE IT"S NOT COMING IN AT 25,000 MPH YOU FUCKING IDIOT.
Reentry is friction from the air Since it suborbital it’s not going as fast then the whole tail raises up creating so much drag so it doesn’t heat up
UFOs at 1.07?
From 1:10 right down corner you see something flying to the north
Marc Geurens That’s just dust
@@SamaelVR nah, it was aliens. It has to be aliens because people watch these kinds of videos just to find........
Aliens.
Noticed it, as well. Replayed several times. Multiple "white things" floating right to left. Appear to be bits of ice (or something similar) flaking off the craft.........(some pass between the camera and the craft itself).
Seen it dude, ETS, but all the smart ones will come and say space dust, ice particles,
I saw that too.
Hope it wasn’t space juke.
If it was it’s a close call.
Love the CGI photo of Earth at 1:03.
Christof L ???
@@undercoverdetective463 Reading comprehension???
Right-wingers are literally competing with themselves to see what is the stupidest, most brain-dead conspiracy theory they can embrace. The current "winner" is "The Earth is flat, all space travel is an elaborate hoax, spaceflight is impossible." It makes them feel better because if they annoy someone who believes in actual reality, they can go "LOL TRIGGERED" and pretend they've won something other than the Obnoxious Jerkbag of the Moment Award.
@@katherineberger6329 Right-wingers???

even if you were on the galactic you would still say it's fake.
Two Tesla 2023-2025? 500-100$?

Don't see any heat shields on bottom of aircraft so why don't it burn up upon reentry?
It has no need for a heat shield because it does not go fast enough to experience any significant atmospheric heating. The past test it (only) went Mach 3.0. When an orbital spacecraft returns to earth they are going approx. Mach 25.0.

Never been to the moon never will be

dumbass
If all you naysayers for r&d in space exploration and conspiracy nuts had your way we all would still living like the amish
Helloooo, this is a flee jumping off a dog's back.......Please stop calling it Space flight,,,,,it is not space flight.......swimming by the sea is not swimming the Atlantic......please get a sense of proportion
Richard Branson on how to become a millionaire start off a billionaire and set off for space
I think he said, start a billionaire and buy an airline.
Still 10 miles short from reaching space. No astronaut wings this time. Keep trying.
Like anyone can afford to go up in this death trap
This is the 1st flight not 2nd. 👎👎
This is cool and hats off to the engineers but this is just for entertainment. Space X goals are for the actual progression and good of mankind.
lol are they gonna feed the hungry and end wars?
Did not sound like a jet engine when landing 1:42. Fake!!!
The propeller plane that escorted the galactic was a paid actor..
It was.. You think that pilot works for free?
Why should it sound like a jet plane?
@@EricIrl
Everything should sound like a jet plane... Everything!
CGI !!!!!
I will send you to zero.
Bollocks
A largely pointless waste of energy and resources.
