so many highlights in this video, great demo! I love the musical, hypnotic melody you play starting at 14:35. Feels like something I would zone out to while driving along a desert highway. The prophet 10 just oozes purity and beauty, and your playing really does its sonic capability justice. Great video Jim!
A really interesting review by a drawbar organist of a classic analog synthesizer, Jim. Gil Melle would have loved to have a Prophet 5 or better yet Prophet 10 back in the early 1970s. He was one of the first musicians to use electronic sounds in TV shows such as Night Gallery where he composed most of the music for this and other shows of that era.
Gil Melle, one of the absolute BEST!! He didn't have a Prophet-5 or Prophet-10 back in the early 1970s but he had some instruments over the years, including the amazing instruments he built and played himself!! He might have had a Prophet-5 or Prophet-10 when they were new!!
thanks Jim. It's amazing how you go right to the parameter we want to hear tweaked, and devote just enough back and forth A-B comparison switching to demonstrate what a curious droid would want to find out. I wonder if that tonal shift from Rev 4 -3 - 2 - 1 could be part of the filter slop that's being introduced, making the Sustain Level of the filter slightly different (or more random) as that Rev knob dials back the years.
Thanks for the demo. Mine arrives in two days, super psyched! What’s the song you play at the end? It’s very John Carpenter-esque; can’t work out if that’s just cos it’s a Prophet 5 or not! 😃
Fantastic!! The best demo of the Prophet-10 Vintage knob I've found yet. I love your John Carpenter feel at the end!! Really keyed into that sound!! Always awesome from you!!
Nice demo, but I own a Rev 1 and in the past I’ve owned 2 other Rev 1’s and they really aren’t as sloppy as setting ‘1’ on the ‘Rev’ knob would have people believe. I would say they are in between 3 & 2 setting on the Rev knob...
Of course , doubt any company would release a synth with such issues, P5 rev1 when came out of factory was fine tuned and calibrated. this is a setting that gives you a taste of a beat up uncalibrated P5 in 2020 :)
What a great demo...I love it when players use it as a musical instrument, and not a noise source. One thing that nobody has touched on is the polyphonic portamento. Is it like the Oberheim OBX-A and OB-8 portamento (think Gloria, by Laura Brannigan) ?
@@abwdoc Thank you for the kind words. I will make a video showing the polyphonic portamento but in a word, yes... it works like the OB8. It's really interesting on the Prophet 10 because of the 10 voices. It can be quite unpredictable. I do hope they allow us Prophet 10 owners to disable some voices in order to get that classic Prophet 5 voice stealing sound, which would also make the polyphonic portamento a bit less random.
I’m sure that could be implemented in software, utilizing one or more of the switches present. Hmmmm...maybe someone should suggest that to Dave (hint...hint). My 10 is on order, and should be in in weeks...I sure hope that my cabinet has as much “character” in the graining as yours (stunning). And, your video also is the only one that shows the difference in sound between filter types and with different Vintage knob settings...big kudos. Keep up the postings !!
Thx for the video. I love the patch and song from your outro. Is it possible to show a screenshot of the front panel from this patch or a quick explaination on how the envelopes and osicilators are set. Would love to try out this patch on my own p5 :)
The SSM has been reissued too and is called the 2140 and it is functionally and sonically the same. Some synth parts suppliers are already selling them for original Rev2 replacement.
There is, the SSI 2140 designed by Dave Rossum (again), according to Dave Smith. I think the guys who do the Rev-1 mod to turn rev3s into rev2s are also using five of them to replace the Curtis IC filters.
I really appreciate that Sequential put a mono output on this, to make it as legit vintage as they could. I use my Eventide pedals with it; TimeFactor, ModFactor, and the Blackhole reverb.
Nice camera work. Many videos like this get filmed at (what appears to be) a 110 degree angle, making you dizzy. I wish the fingering noise was a bit quieter though, so we could hear the synth more. :-)
is that a specific track at ua-cam.com/video/CdeZ5ymzQw4/v-deo.html ? Or just noodling around? love the chord progressions! Also the Rhodes-y sound in the end is so Kashmir 💙
@@bobafat1830 I'm using an old Yamaha N12 mixer as my interface. It's FireWire based. That's how old my system is. :) I did build a new computer a few months ago with USB-C and Thunderbolt on it, but I've been so busy with projects that I haven't had time to transfer all my plugins / software over. So I'm still using my old computer and interface.
Since there are no gigs, I've just been using the effects in my DAW (Cubase). But I do have an Eventide Time Factor for delays and the SPACE for reverb. I need to get myself a good chorus pedal. Maybe an Electro-Harmonix? Not sure.
great demo thanks. i’m still trying to decide between the 5 & 10. how does “vintage” knob affect unison (when detune is at minimum)? i assume more voices is better but i wonder are there any downsides to the 10 vs the 5? i’ve heard examples of how chord progressions with long release times can get dissonant as notes overlap. but other than that...?
Finally a Prophet that looks like a Prophet. Just like Stratocaster should look like a Stratocaster, and Les Paul should look like a Les Paul. I actually prefer the DX7, D-50, and M1, but I digress...
Is it about the sound or the fetishism. Sonically this synth sounds very pedestrian to me, not because it's a bad synth but this is such _incredibly_ well trodden ground. If you close your eyes this demo video could be any of a thousand hard or soft synths. I'm not trying to hate on this synth or its fans, but it's not IMO about music creation - unless perhaps the user interface is particulary inspirational and.. it's some knobs. Ok ok you be you ;-)
Love your playing Jim. Smiling ear-to-ear about this new Prophet. :)
Great demo. You got an amazing wood pattern. Congrats
The guys at Sequential watched this vid and said the same thing! I got good wood! :)
The best demo of the Vintage Knob thus far.
At 53, I've got a vintage knob too.
Hahahaha

Woo-Hoo great review , and I really like the poly-synth sound at 11:36 !
Got a Prophet 10 on order..... great video thanks.
Congratulations!
Great video and very helpful in giving me an understanding of the beauty of this instrument. Thank you.
This thing just has that magical sound :) amazing stuff! Love your playing too man!
Man I'm getting another Prophet 5! Your playing made me me love the pads again.
Great presentation of an iconic instrument. Thanks for the video.
Amazing, I'm hoping to get a prophet 5 rev 4 one day! Hoping it won't be out of production anytime soon. Thanks for sharing!

Did yours come with the two extra caps on the main circuit board (I believe S.N. 160 or below) ?

Finally somebody knows more chords, then just simple minor or major :-)
Awesome !!!! Great playing.
Patch 212 is beautiful!
Outstanding! Now i want one :)
Good presentation. Wonderful outro.
From around 10:37, or so, is the best sound I've heard on any neo-Prophet demo so far - is that PWM ?
It is the sawtooth waveform on both oscillators just barely detuned. So simple and yet so beautiful.
Nicely done Jim!
Max detune was usable...just not for Jazz. That’s for EDM and TRAP. Very nice vibes at the end!!!! 🎶👍🏾
Good point!

Is there a plug-in sequencer or arpeggiator for these Prophet re-issues?
Great job!! Professor Darren Barrett - Berklee College of Music
awesome...I just wish it had voice panning...I know its not P5 but I love it on an analogue poly....
14:30 patch 213. Is that a factory patch?
AFAIK there are 200 user and 200 factory presets. Why is program no. 511 displayed then?
How does it emulate the rev 2 filter if there isnt a modern equivalent to the ssm2040?

Consider doing a video using the Strymon pedals. Blue sky,
modius, time line, which distortion would you recommend?
it is polysynth but as a bonus you get Pro-1 included ..
can the ten be split on the board ? two sounds five and five?
lovely demo, Jim! what are you using to record the p10 here?
Thank you. Straight into Cubase via the mono output of the Prophet.
