This case perfectly illustrates why mixing family and finances is often a recipe for disaster. The defendant, who at least had the decency to dress appropriately for court, made agreements and verbal contracts without properly involving the parties affected. Combining family with financial matters can lead to significant emotional turmoil and heartbreak when commitments are not honored, as vividly demonstrated here. The defendant seemed to believe that doing favors allowed him to unilaterally alter the agreement and absolve his debt. Additionally, his thought process led him to think that because he was going through hard times and didn't receive his tax return, he could change the contract at his whim. It's clear he took shameless advantage of his aunt, thinking he could walk away from his obligations without consequence. This situation is not only sad but entirely avoidable.
