It's insane that there are so many optimization tricks in Melee which are just not documented online (in an easily accessible way). Thank you Hax for making videos like this. Lack of documentation is one the great tragedies of Melee imo.
a tip about the instant double jump - you don't NEED z-jump, because you can plink your thumb between x and y to do it consistently. this is how zain does NIL on dreamland
@@NightGhost1400 thing is, for this specific technique in the video, you can't use tap jump. i also use all three :P and for instant double jump i'm able to do it consistently with one finger double tapping Y lol, but that's very uncommon.
Glad someone with an audience is telling people about 1-frame edge cancels! Not enough people know the details. If I could give a piece of optimization advice in return: when recording a voiceover you can start by recording 10-15 seconds of your environment without talking, then use that audio to fill in gaps in your sentences where there would otherwise be jarring silence. This also makes ambient sounds like fan noise, mic hum, etc. far less noticeable. You can also use that baseline to filter out your background noise from the voiceover audio, but I don’t recommend doing that unless there’s a music track or something to mask the silence.
I always wondered what I was doing wrong when I would wave dash past people as Luigi and try to turn around dash to get a grab. I ended up anywhere near where I thought I would and this video explained why! Wavedash was eating my forward momentum. Thank you Hax$. I'll offer some advice in return. Never think about your past, present, or future when your angry or depressed. You wont see any of it clearly and make yourself feel even worse. When one door closes another opens up if you just keep walking down the long corridor that is life.
insane knowledge drops hax$ my man this is how you show you are changed, just stay positive and keep contributing to melee. also small note id love some soft background music goin on while you talk, video is a bit too quiet
I always did the dash back after the waveback by instinct because it rewarded so much and now I know there’s a real reason behind my every day melee movement… love these videos and this game so much
0:31 Neil Breen moment. just rerecord the intro and cut it in on any of the chapter breaks. there's multiple long pauses right after that dude, just cut there.
The double trigger principle can also be applied to frame perfect standing grab (sort of). If you're a frame early with the Z press and keep it held, you'll end up just light shielding and likely get reversal'd. Pressing A on the next frame is insurance you'll perform a shieldgrab instead if that happens.
Double trigger air dodge is similar to another trick where you jc grab and up smash for back up so if you miss the jc grab timing you upsmash instead of jumping.
The double trigger wavedash is actually so nice thanks for the reminder, the dash out of wavedash is really useful info as well 🎉 hope you are doing well hax thanks for the wisdom
Great and informative video; keep up the good, useful posts and good behavior; I obviously don’t know if it’ll help, but I think it should and hope it does.
I don't double trigger my triangle jump shines, but I still do them pretty consistently using a keyboard switch trigger. Having consistent actuation distance and feedback for your trigger inputs is probably about as useful as going for 2 inputs. Maybe not quite the same (I'm sure it also stacks), but it leaves less inconsistency to compensate for.
Omg im wrong. I tested again with frame advance and it actually adds a frame to the ff lockout LOL. same with shield which i guess would be a detriment to yoshi parry runoffs. Essentially if you run off a platform in your jumpsquat animation i THOUGHT that you can ff faster because of an eye test and it felt faster. But in reality i think the jumpsquat animation of certain characters is similar to their first airborn frames. Needed frame advance to make sure. Super interesting that it adds to the ff lockout
I think you may have missed a pretty obscure one, by tilting the stick back slightly after a dash you can extend the frames youre in the dash, by using this you can dash farther away and then dash in the same direction basically through a foxtrot and then dash back regaining all of the momentum the extended dash wouldve lost ngl i just want to see this getting used more in melee, i originally figured it out on sonic in PM and quickly realized it works extremely well on marth, falcon, and fox sheik inparticular it allows for a longer dash dance instead of being stuck in place with micro dashes
Been playing this game since 2001. I learned something new on the second tip. I imagine sheik/peach’s wavedash momentum has less of an impact than say fox or ICs
Re: "Need to use Z-Jump to instant double jump." Tap jump technically works, but may be awkward to learn. With claw grip, though, there is no reason why your index finger can't learn to hold X and press Y or hold Y and press X.
It probably worth noting that with the teeter cancel, some characters are significantly safer like Sheik since her teeter animation puts like her entire body so far over the lip of the stage that its really hard for an opponent to clip you
And here is an extension that some people will appreciate, but most will deem valueless. Because Wavedash back both hinders momentum forward and has really high velocity it makes for the generally best set-up move for Moonwalks - only beaten by horizontal wavelands or other actions that provides the char with even more backwards momentum during Wait.
#12 is missing the point. The mechanic you should be implementing is teeter cancelling itself, not just this one particular usage of it. Teeter is game changing and no one talks about it. iykyk
In theory could a falco or falcon benefit from the extra 1-2 frames before sliding off on a down air edge cancel that pops the opposing player up to catch them in falling hitstun with a delayed air attack? With falco down air follow ups the logic tracks to me as I've noticed some slow slide offs especially on dreamland to catch side to top platform stuff has lead to follow ups I feel I couldn't have otherwise hit.

This comment on a Hax video lol. I’m not sure why but claw can hurt peoples fingers/hands and z jump is more ergonomic and tap jump requires moving a stick compared to just clicking a button.
its when you dash backwards while in a dash, and for 1 frame you are turned around and can let go but still be standing still. When you pivot you are using the smash turn.

JC grab is lenient enough that this shouldn't be necessary. You have all the jumpsquat frames to input the grab. Am I missing something?
