Totally agree.... And the haunting harmonica in the soundtrack... Mated with the character of Bronson".... Critics said would never work.....?. Yeah right.... I grew up in Australia and hands down ...... What are the best westerns I ever experienced
Of all the music I have listened to in my entire life, this song has got to be one of the most beautiful compositions ever composed and for the best western film ever produced.
And 'Deborah theme' from Once Upon a time in America. From the music of raw and untamed masculinity of "Dollar" series, Leone was shifting towards a life where role of woman becoming more prominent in life. Both this and Deborah are predominantly feminine theme. Both among finest of movie score. Salute to Morricone.
I discovered this movie by accident. Back in the 70's I was a bartender, and one night I got home at 4am and this film was on TV. I was half asleep right until the moment Henry Fonda blows away the kid. From that second on I was mesmerized by this film, particularly this song by Ennio Morricone, "Jill's Theme," perhaps the most beautiful love theme ever written.
Man, this scene had me crying because of how breathtakingly gorgeous Morricone’s score is! 😭 I was absolutely blown away by how the vocals and instrumentals blended so beautifully together! I was left speechless less than halfway through Once Upon A Time In The West! It became a 5 star film instantly in my eyes! One of the greatest masterpieces ever! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The scene at the station (with the camera pan up the side of the building onto the town) is recognised as the first ever 'music video', as the soundtrack was recorded first and the scene shot to fit it rather than the other way around.
Not exactly an error. She was waiting at the station a while, and may have decided to board the train again before changing her mind. You'll need to read the script for the right answer. It's not like Leone to make a glaring error like that.
Leone and Morricone. My God what those two alone achieved in this clip let alone their entire run together is nothing short of monumental. To think they were in primary school together, didn't see each other for thirty years, then happened to meet up and change the world of cinema. This is the pinnacle. Once Upon a Time in the West is High Art. And this theme is quite possibly the greatest of all time.
The use of silence and facial expressions were impeccable! One of the three best westerns ever made! Almost perfection! Sergio and Ennio was the best combo ever in film history…no others were close! The long landing wideouts with the music telling the story without any dialogue were so beautiful, matched and surpassed by the ever beautiful CC!
I can only agree, goosebumps and the best descision of Sergio Leone. I believe her competeting actresses of this time and her similar age, Sophie Loren, Brigitte Bardot, Raquel Welch and perhaps Liz Taylor beauty stars too (by other meanings and preferences) could not play the role with such an outstanding expression at all close up scenes in their faces, only Claudia.
@@psrfpsrf Sophia Loren was originally given the role as her husband Carlo Ponti was very close to Sergio. But after thinking about it, and before shooting began,Sergio changed his mind. He said he didn't need a diva.
This masterpeice had everything...Claudia, Fonda, Bronson, Leoni's film genius, Morricones's music, wonderful Western scenery and a changing take on Western folklore as seen through cinema. The supporting cast were magnificent too, all understanding the Western genre. One of the best movies to ever come out of cinematic history.
Not willing to diss Ennio, I love him, BUT... But Ennio was DIRECTED by Leone... So you see and hear Sergio Leone genius, both in visual story telling AND in sound/music/ambiance setup.
Long shot, medium shot, tracking shot, panning shot, crane shot and wide/establishing shot, all seamlessly combined in one, in perfect unison with the music. Absolute cinematic gold.
Such a craft! Sergio Leone taking his sweet time. This is what differentiates great movies from others. You are not focused on finding out whats gonna happen next, you are simply enjoying whats happening. Cause its not about the destination, its about the journey.
That amazing camera crane shot from the window of the train station and then up and over the roof to the town with Ennio Morriconne’s amazing music swelling in time to the elevation of the shot is pure cinema magic!
Building the town cost more than The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, and it was worth it even if just for this one shot. In combination with the music, it's absolutely breathtaking.
The storytelling of the scene is a masterpiece. It´s telling you everything you need to know about where she´s arrived, who, the condition of the town, society and historic time (kind of) You realize she´s arrive to The West, not the idealized west but somewhat more real and dangerous. A place where people needs to work for a living under a cloud of dust.
I understand, and it's sad and beautiful. But, I don't need any "real life loss", to cry each time at this scene (and some others from this movie). Just for saying that the movie is "intense enough" to bring tears. Of course, with personal memories it must be even more moving.
2:30 the happy music stops. She looks at the clock. The haunting music starts and you know that there’s something wrong. The crane shot to see the town is amazing. Fantastic cinematography
Once upon a time this was the present. It was now and all the labor that went into laying the railroad tracks. Can't imagine and they're gone just like the dust blowing. Love this movie and the music.
The singer in this song doesn't get mentioned enough....her vocals are the heart of this masterful mix of talent that is this scene....her name is Edda Dell'Orso.... also have a look at the energy and movement of all the wagons, horses, people , dust, wind...... its all extraordinary

This and "The Exctasy of Gold" from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" two of the most brilliant musical/directing achievements in cinema history, both from Leone and Morricone. LOVE. PEACE. God Bless
Such a great movie, score, camera work, acting, script as you will never see in a movie again. Some things to really pay attention to in this slice of the movie. Notice the crane shot when Jill enters the station with the swelling of the score into a crescendo showing the optimism of a growing town, the frontier becoming civiilized. I can't recall a director who actually directs extras so well. You have the crane shot of the town and people actually look busy doing something. The unloading of the train and the load master cheerfully getting the workers to pickup the pace, perfect. I know from experience! And the scene of Sam maniacally racing his coach through the railroad workers, again men look as though they are building a railroad, with an air of bemusement at the antics of Sam and his coach. This is really really important because Leone is building an immersive world for the viewer to fall into before the movie really gets rolling. The viewer starts to care about the characters early on. It's key to making this a great movie, even without the endless dialogue which ruins so many movies.
This music, this score, this magnificent moment in time has enriched all of our lives. If you don't agree that it's one of the finest accomplishments that ever graced our world it's at the least on a very, very short list. Over 50 years old and still it brings me to tears and incredible joy. We are all the better for having heard this incredible, gorgeous, haunting and most beautiful song.

This one was among those and I cannot listen to it without gratitude for forming me and giving me bitter sweet memories. Thank you, Ennio.

George Sealy, is Monument Valley in Utah? I know its not Texas.
Horseman -- Yes MV is in Utah, just north of the Arizona border. Find Kayenta, AZ in Google maps, then follow Route 163 north to the border. I hope you get there. You won't forget it. And you can also find the "arch" too. It is at 37° 7'45.83 N 109°58'24.87 W
I live in Texas and I've been to Sweetwater, Texas and it just mostly flat land with mesquite, desert, and cactus; no where near as majestic and pretty as that place. Thanks for the info.
the theme suits the mrs.Jill, she doesnt know she already is a widow so her smile is still hopefull,, except for the reality that awaits her
Makes me wants to go back and live in the past... touching melancholic music
And you won't get to use UA-cam.
best movie and sound ever.....amazing .
The Stones Dude had to shoot in Monument Valley, Ford Country. Bravo!
But his movie is a magnificent answer in every way.
And Morricone's work will last every bit as long as Shakespeare's.
Director and Composer as one. Sublime film making.
The greatest movie ever made, only surpassed by the soundtrack
